I was there for the history though, from my perspective, it was not as harsh as you imply. Porter was in love with her but she wanted out to go on her own. Though he objected she created this song, it touched his heart so much he agreed and asked her to record it, give the rights to him and she could leave her contract and she did. It was the top song in her history as a singer.
