I'm really sad I only now stumbled across your channel because I love the advants calender idea of discovering 25 new bands in December :)
Dir en grey are my favorite band in the world apart from sukekiyo and I feel slightly sad for you that the first song you ever listend to from them is Obscure...not because its a bad song or anything, in fact I love it quite a bit, but because it clearly wasn't 'the right fit' for you. Dir en grey started their activities in 1997, they've been playing in the same line-up ever since, have released 11 LPs so far and are certainly one of the most important and most influencial Japanese metal bands when it comes to developing ones own sound and creating art with music...I think that's the thing with Dir en grey that cannot come across with this song very well since it is a bit too obviously a nod towards other bands (one has to keep in mind, though, that it's 21 years old).
I would recommend giving them another go with one of their more epic songs (mainly because they will give you the opportunity to better hear what the band is about within a single song). Vinushka is a perfect choise for that - best live from ANDROGYNOUS [there is a version with eng. subtitles by Kayaちゃんえる]. Songs like Diabolos or Schadenfreude would work very well as well [especially Schadenfreude as it's a newer song from their latest album]. The band takes influence from difference genres and [I checked] have never referred to themselves as a metal band [even though the majority of their songs clearly fall under this category].
I saw Petitemousse suggest sukekiyo as well and I would love to see you dive into them as well :)
elisabeth addict is an interesting song that uses a violyre and spanish guitars and had a bit of a pagan-gothic-folk-ballad vibe - very hard to describe. Another song I would recommend for a first reaction would be Houmonsha X from their newest album EROSIO. Teher is a pv for this song on their youtube channel which has english subtitles [they are integrated in the music videa and a bit weird at times...I mean...the translation is a bit debatable but it's still a nice touch to provide them]. For elisabeth addict go with the live version on Kaya's channel. That's the best one by far.
Thank you for doing these! I probably won't find enough time during the next days to binge the 25 videos but I will make a January thing out of it ^^
Have a wonderful Christmas time and a safe New Years eve!

you should try the band Sukekiyo, it's the same singer but in a different style. you can try the live of the song Elisabeth addict. Thanks for your reaction on "obscure" but it's a very old live!

@@Petitemousse I will check that out. I actually did a video for Saturday of a really great metal band called the gazette but Sony did a block on it and blocked it from Japan which is 41% of viewers. The sad part is it was set so the band gets the ad revenue but they still blocked it so this may be perfect band to fill that spot

@@mikesmusicalrehab Sukekiyo like Dir en grey also takes a lot of risks and has no genre. They're generally less geared toward metal than Dir en grey, and could be considered a more feminine project (not that it would be only for girls or anything, I love it. It's just a vibe thing). Genres in there are stuff like city pop, jazz, punk, rock, electronic. Like Dir en grey a lot of stuff they do can't fit into any genre. I wouldn't know what to call Elizabeth Addict for example. Sukekiyo's bassist is my favorite of any band.
He (Kyo - vocalist) has a third band as well named Petit Brabancon which is the youngest band. They haven't racked up as many genres yet and could mostly be described as very heavy nu-metal but they've got some strays in there.
All 3 bands are active simultaneously and produce new releases regularly (and Dir en grey is almost 30 years old at this point).
Dude has more energy and power in his voice at almost 50 than most vocalists do at 20. He's in his prime.
I don't think Kyo's projects usually get blocked. I haven't ever seen someone complain about it happening.
The Gazette is fun but in my opinion Dir en grey has always been more interesting.

This is not representative of the sound of Dir en grey.
However, you could pick five songs of this band and you'd get the same comment.
Incredibly broad range of styles/genres from numetal, rock, progressive, ballads, deathcore, metal, punk, and uncategorisable.
Dir en grey need a deeper dive. This is one of the most important bands other than X Japan.
    Obscure is a difficult start.
Vinushka live is a better showcase (primarily for the vocalists range), but Ain't Afraid to Die will make you wonder if it's the same band...
The fans will set you right, but you'll need more than one song to even slightly get what they're about.
Incredibly influential, but it'll make more sense later.

@@pointlesswasteoftime I kind of felt like that would be the situation that’s why I am definitely going to deep dive into them. I just think maybe not my exact song

@mikesmusicalrehab it's cool, definitely wasn't meant as a criticism, they're a polarising band. Diru reinvent and take a lot of risks, there's going to be songs that you don't like, and hopefully some that'll make you have an "ohhh" moment. There's even dissent in the fan base over which performances of songs are better as they improvise or reinterpret rarely playing songs exactly the same way. A very organic band in that regard.
      They definitely reward explorers.
Also, since Galneryus blew you away, look up the live of Versailles (band) - Masquerade, or if you're really wanting something bigger Faith and Decision. They'll be right in your wheelhouse.

Oh yeah DeG is like a very good wine - need several sips to get to know their style a bit more. At first you don't understand the flavour, but the more you try, the more it grows on you. At least that's how it was for me and I'm a huge fan now
I'm really waiting for more and pls check out the Gazette, I think they highly deserve the attention! My personal favourite is Ugly or Dogma (lives) but any song will do really hahaha

I grew up with this band and they were one of my favorites but mostly for only a few songs. Took me about 10 years for everything they do to really click for me though and they've been my most favorite band for 14 years since.

Just found your channel so can't give personalised suggestions for dir en grey but i think following songs by them cover everything .
Cage- music video is nice plus its a song from their very first album(pure v-kei song and you'll notice the voice of singer sounds completely different than recent songs)
Vinushka(view of the acro live) or Macabre(live at tabula rasa) fir their best prog music
Decayed Crow live symhonic version(pure brurality like infant anihillator)
Ware Yame Tote, Ain't afraid to die(for ballads)
Zakuro, Mushi for more emotional ballads
    Red Em for Rock
Uroko music video for opera vocals mixed with harsh ones
Kyo the singer has improved drastically over the carrer and most of their album version are badly mixed(that's one of the main reason fans recommend their lives)
Also any live from Kaya or Perixuploaded channel are safe and reactor friendly as far as i know
