Thanks for such a cogent and straightforward explanation - you're probably the easiest 'explainer' to listen to on the Internet. We used a Bursakart recently when we were visiting family in Bursa and the Istanbulkart seems identical in conception and use. We've been to Istanbul many, many times but never once used an Istanbulkart. Off there again in April, God willing, and this time I'll be following your instructions. Tesekkur ederiz!

You need to have a valid student certificate. You need to go to a IBB points with this certificate and then request a student discount card. These points you can find using Google maps.

If it's a regular card then you don't need 2 cards. But if it's a discount card aka. personal card with the name and photo on it then only the valid person can use it. The card shown in this video is just a regular card.

If you are a tourist and will use public transport in Istanbul or elsewhere in Turkey, do your research about transportation. Yes, the process is easier for citizens, but this is a normal thing anyway.
On the other hand, your lack of research or ignorance is not the country's fault or problem. If you're coming to the country, you need to do your research.
If you're not coming just because of that, no one cares. I don't think we're going to look for your absence.
