    The reason you CAN'T put an alternator on each wheel is due to the simple fact you cause more friction/drag than you do creating the energy. The reason "hybrid" cars have 'regenerative' braking is that it uses the stopping force energy created by friction to charge the battery system. Unless you're doing a ton of brake checking on the freeway it would do you no good.

    • @Lierofox
      @Lierofox ปีที่แล้ว +87

      That's how regenerative braking works. ANY time current is flowing through a wire, the magnetic field that's created around it works to oppose the flow of electricity. That's why you can spin a hand-crank generator easily when it's not connected to anything, because it's generating voltage, but no current is flowing, but the moment you hook a light bulb up to it suddenly current flows through the bulb and it becomes much harder to turn. This effect makes it great for slowing the vehicle down since you get a PORTION of the power used to accelerate the vehicle up to speed, minus some resistive losses, air drag, friction, etc., and you save wear and tear on the brake pads, but you'll never get back all the energy you put in, not even close. And to add to that, the wheels DO have alternators on them, an electric motor is just an alternator/generator, they just swap from consuming electricity to generating electricity when you use regenerative braking.
      This is true of normal alternators too, the alternator DOES cause drag on the engine, but it's usually not very much because alternators aren't always putting out their full potential, only what the vehicle is drawing at the time, which is usually 25-50 amps at most (ECU, ignition system, fuel pump, electric fans/HVAC blower, marker and head lights) 50 amps at 13.7v = 687w so with efficiency losses it robs roughly 1hp from the engine's total horsepower. Point is, alternators don't give you free energy, and on most electric/hybrid vehicles there's already an alternator analog in place: The electric motor, providing regenerative braking.

    • @nope1918
      @nope1918 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      To answer the other part of the question, Teslas (and any other EV) could have solar panels on the roof. But you need a lot of solar panels to generate any meaningful amount of energy and cars just aren't that big. It simply isn't worth it, you'd only be getting, like, an extra five miles of range per day.
      I guess you could always try to build some kind of collapsible solar panel that would deploy when the car is parked too but again why? It's not worth it.

    That sparkplug on the tail pipe is an old trick from the 50s. Used through the 60s and even into the 70s. You ran ignition wire to that spark plug and using a switch, ran power to that spark plug instead of one in the engine. 6:17 So, an interesting thing about alternators... They are generators. Funny thing about generators... they are electric motors. Tesla does, in fact, recoup spent energy from rotating tires when you break because once you turn a motor into a generator it creates a tremendous amount of magnetic drag. All electric and some hybrid cars do that to extend the batery charge in a process called regenrative breaking.
    Also, fun fact: the original Tesla Motors design of the Roadster included solar panels on the roof and hood. Turns out, there isn't enough surface area to generate enough charge to justify the addition of solar panels due to additional cost. Who wants to spend an additional $5k for 5 more minutes of run time? Old coot needs to read a book.

    Because the power needed to turn an alternator is more than it provides, so you'd be draining the battery even faster. Solar panels have been put on hundreds of concept cars - they add weight, are expensive, are not efficient enough yet, and replacing them due to scratches, dents, and accidents is cost prohibitive when the panels only add a dozen or two miles to the range. This isn't a new idea.

    Because now you are talking about perpetual motion, which is impossible. Adding a generator to each wheel would create additional drag. The car would then have to use more electricity to overcome this drag, thereby negating the generators. Some cars do have regenerative braking, but the generators are only active when the vehicle is coasting or braking. Additionally, simultaneously charging and discharging a battery is going to drastically reduce its lifespan. An electric car is always going to consume more electricity than it can produce.

    5:00 looks like something on the vehicle lift broke, i'm guessing one of the equalizing cables snapped upon reaching top-travel or they slipped off of a cable pulley/a cable pulley broke. you can see the lift arms on the right side dropping a foot until the lift's safety locks caught the arms, and the arms on the Left side look slightly higher than the Right side after the fall. that kinda imbalance can sometimes be enough to rock a vehicle off... good thing neither dude was directly underneath it, death by Smartcar is NOT something i'd want in my obituary...
    i work on these things for a living, the vehicle lift appears to be a Forward brand DP10A lift with a 10k pound capacity, no way was it over-loaded with a dinky smartcar on it, so that and the way it behaved in the video makes me suspect a part-failure due to lack of maintenance on the car lift. equipment like that should be expected yearly to try and catch things like this before they happen, steel cables often begin fraying over time and with use and if it is not spotted, breaks can occur which lead to things like this. also, make sure the lift arms are set up properly under a car to reduce the risk of it falling off under most circumstances. though with how light a smartcar is i'll bet the thing would have bounced off regardless of where the lift arms were set up

      I can say this. Using ANY peice of equipment, from a power jack to a lorry, where you cannot get the thing to turn or maneuver the way you want can get VERY frustrating. Especially, if you feel people are watching or you're on a time crunch. You get pissed make a bad move or adjustment and you're so pissed you keep the bad move going.

    from all the reasons from physics i will pick the simpler one... pretty sure an electric vehicle needs way more power than what 4 alternators can deliver... 😂

  • @ReadTheShrill
    @ReadTheShrill ปีที่แล้ว +4

    6:17 "why can't their be an alternator on each wheel [of a Tesla]"
    Um, there is. (Well, probably a DC generator) That's how regenerative braking works.

    • @salle6307
      @salle6307 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, electric trains and cars have generators on brakes that are using leftover inertia to retrieve some energy back in battery. I think he meant that they put them to work all the time and charge while they go. He obviously skipped the psyhics lesson where they learned about conservation of energy...
      About solar panels, good idea but it would double car price. Solar panels are not cheap to build neither they are that efficient.

    1:22 that's a flamethrower setup. You cut ignition for a few seconds to get fuel through the motor into the exhaust system, then ignite it with that spark plug in the tail pipe. It's technically a mod, not a problem.
