Do the labels pay you an upfront fee so that if the song never releases you still get paid? Or is the upfront fee (beat sale) only kicking in if the song comes out?

Everything is negotiable. I have records that I never got paid on, others that I got paid for before it was released, and others that got paid for after, and others that are just royalties.

Don't fall for any of those, they're all scams man. You don't ever have to pay for placements, anyone that tells you that is scamming you.
