  • Technologist Yat Siu believes the "open metaverse" -- a decentralized version of the internet also known as web3 -- is laying the foundation for a freer, fairer, more prosperous society. In a future-focused talk, he explores the transformative possibilities of web3, from enabling digital ownership and the creator economy to providing a much-needed update to capitalism.

The appeal to "true digital ownership" in web3 and the metaverse carries the assumption that ownership inherently translates to freedom and prosperity. However, this overlooks the potential for digital ownership to create exclusivity barriers and transform public goods like knowledge into commodities. A shift to a marketplace model could undermine the internet's original promise as a free, open space for sharing human knowledge.
Moreover, the idea that digital property rights will safeguard against control by platforms or future AIs is not necessarily substantiated. Ownership could just shift power dynamics from corporations to those with significant digital assets, leaving the average user still under a form of control. Rather than unquestioningly endorsing digital ownership, we should scrutinize its limitations and explore more equitable alternatives.

Ironic that you talk about not being substantiated, where is the evidence for your own claims? "Potential" for ..., "could undermine" ... Of course, a whole new paradigm has the potential for a lot of things, can do a lot of things, that's sort of the whole point. If we'd just focus on the negatives, because there always is in such a shift, nothing would ever change. Digital control can easily be made to limit the power of those with more digital assets. That's the whole point of decentralization, and why everyone who's minimally informed about the blockchain knows some project are more centralized than others. But that's not the only reason, the other reason is because it can be made transparent WAY more easily than when the whole thing is controlled by a big company. Of course eliminating all centralization is just about impossible, and achieving one goal in a complex economy often entails sacrificing another. But at least, it IS possible, AND again, transparent. If you actually have any alternative, feel free to propose them, Web3 itself is full of alternatives, that's one of its many appeals. But a speech as yours only amounts to instead unquestioningly endorsing ownership by big companies.

Gamers have no internet in the metaverse. It has nothing to offer. It's a bland, soulless, corporate showroom, devoid of any joy or humanity in its design. It's what you get when you ask businessmen to design something, as opposed to anyone with any talent or brilliance.

@@memyselfandi8544that is exactly the problem that NFTs solve. I don’t mean NFTs like those lame ape pictures, but the underlying economic concept of something being non-fungible. NFTs allow us to take something digital (and therefore infinitely replicable) and provably verify that only a single genuine copy exists. As “online society” continues to expand, we need a way to prove ownership of intangible digital assets. Maybe these assets are silly JPEG “art”, or maybe they’re something more meaningful (like a share in a business, or ownership of a domain name, or access rights to a commercial service). NFTs solve the problem you are referring to.

It's an incredible view of the future. Definitely. Places like the Middle East, France, Southeast Asia, and Latin America are already getting on that train. Surprisingly, there are a lot of people that still don't understand the capabilities, and where this is all going in a couple of years. I think this man is way ahead of his time, hence why this is not very easy to understand for so many people.
It's exactly a mirror of what the real world is, but now it's translating into the digital world, as many many people live their lives through their computers, and will start to protect their personal data, their creations online, and the stuff that they buy online as well.

what you fail to realize is you do not OWN those items in those games. If that MMO went offline or if they got bought out by a bigger company, they can change the entire rules of the stack of that MMO. They can close that marketplace, they can delete your items. You can't do this on blockchain which is the point. You truly own the items you earned and hold. And if for whatever reason that network gets hacked by future AI, since most of the code is interoperable with other networks, you can simply moved that value of ownership to another network and continue business as normal. You can't do that anywhere else.

This is the same vision we had for the internet itself back in the 90s. The problem now is the same problem then: companies are not incentivized in any way to allow their assets to be used on other platforms or to share or play nice with anybody. These assets -- whether you "own" them or not -- are not useful outside the walled gardens built by the corporations and never will be.
Think of it this way: if you're a corporation, are you going to spend money on a building a feature into your product who's only goal is to take control and money away from you?
The only way around it is to build a separate economy of Open Source games and digital assets that could interoperate through NFT and the like in a meaningful way.

@@bhutan5857 Yes I did, but a liar saying they "aren't lying" is not exactly convincing. These companies aren't exactly different.
Fair enough, this guy is from a different company. Not really though, big companies having blanket control over the human rights inside of said technology will if not always then almost always act in that manner.
It happened with Meta, it happened with Google, it happened with every major technology company. Absolutely zero difference which exact company as any company having so much power over people is a problem. Web3 is just another utopian dream idea that when examined more closely proves to be a dystopia instead.
Quite frankly his ideas are so delusional I didn't even want to go into depth about them. The level of delusion can be best pointed out in this statement (delusion that echoes in his other beliefs): 4:50 - 5:46 "People don't buy this burkin bag because they want to put stuff in it. 99% of its value is entirely virtual network effects" ... "Its utility is a very distant second. This is perhaps true for almost everything we purchase in the real world."
This is something that only the very rich and self-centered can belief. Deluded to think the world will just magically continue to work if we ignore the utility of systems. It won't. This is a delusion formed from rich people only talking to other rich people and not realizing there's a world outside. This is the delusion of the people who flew from major city to major city in the US and asked what all those weird patterns on the ground were for... those were farms. Or the people who answer the question "where does your food come from" with "the mall/supermarket".
His other ideas echo a similar dismissal of reality. Ideas such as "digital ownership". Ownership is a principle that can be enforced using A. the state, and B. the people's physical ability to threaten and overthrow the state. If either of these is gone ownership as a concept diminishes.
That's why in dictatorships being wealthy is a lot less useful, because the state can take it whenever they want. Ownership as a concept is useless because it is missing B. the people's physical ability to threaten and overthrow the state (/the group enforcing ownership). With technology companies there is no one that can overthrow them digitally.
So if society is digital then the only way to overthrow them is to kill them in real life and pray to god you can figure out their technology long enough to keep it running.
His ideas as you can see are completely delusional. They ignore the basic principles of reality. Balance of powers between the people and those ruling over them maintain structure. Put a bunch of tech overlords and make the entirety of society dependent on said technology, well, you've just set up one of the most horrible dictatorships in reality.

It refers to open communities where you can be a part of as a participant. But not only that. You also have a say and a stake in a particular project if you want.
Some projects have a specific form of transaction (i.e. a token) that has (or is supposed to have) value. The value is accrued depending on how strong that project is, and how useful (utility) their products and services are.
The project can be in any industry, it doesn't only apply to gaming. It can be in the fashion, sports, or education industries.

Lots of wrong assumptions in the comments here! NFTs are a genuinely useful economic innovation 👀
I’m NOT referring to overhyped pictures of apes, but the underlying economic concept of something being non-fungible. NFTs allow us to take something digital (and therefore infinitely replicable) and provably verify that only a single genuine copy exists. This is a vital component underlying many economic principles.
As “online society” continues to expand, we need a way to prove ownership of infinitely-replicable digital assets. Maybe these assets are silly JPEGs, or maybe they’re something more meaningful (like a share in a business, or ownership of a domain name, or access rights to a commercial service).
NFTs make a fully “digital economy” feasible. There will be huge opportunities created for the people who understand this early.

    • @ccordyceps
      @ccordyceps 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

yeah, the concept of digital & data ownership is paramount. but because mass consumers act off emotion first, they are controlled by fear so it's no real sense wasting energy to try to get them to understand such an concept to them. they dont wanna listen or be rational on a subconscious level sadly. people just dont quite understand how technology evolves despite growing around it for decades oddly enough. tech like crypto & blockchain tech is such a novelty currently; novel tech is bound to be littered with bad launches/examples AND bad actors.
i mean just look at the first 'cellphone' that was ever created, the thing was the size of a brick and looked very cringy, but fast forward like 6-7 years and then we get an iphone. this is the concept common folk simply cant comprehend lol. our society is regressed sadly, they see new tech struggle at first then their first move is to think negatively about it. the key is to always look towards the future.

As the years go by I’m learning more about the economic theory behind it, how it actually serves a specific macroeconomic purpose, and in what ways it is better (and worse!) than fiat currency. Just wish I hadn’t spent it in 2013! 😂

    • @ccordyceps
      @ccordyceps 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@rcnhsuailsnyfiue2 mhm i hear ya! bitcoin is a tool of sorts. like every tool, they can be used to do both good AND evil. the simple fact is that bitcoin & crypto are now being completely bottlenecked by bad actors preforming ponzi shenanigans currently.
so people only focus on these bad actors, and that inhibits their ability to see into the future. our ego latches onto negativity cause that can evoke fear to make a person gravitate to safety/comfort.
AI/AGI is the main component that will help to remove that bottleneck that crypto is suffering from currently i feel. the growth in AI will lead into a more "web3/metaverse" since AI needs user datasets to work. this will create more demand for data ownership and compensation for adding value to things as a consumer ='s less consumer exploitation kinda. which will then allow crypto to do what it was actually meant for back in 2012.

As soon as the masses work out tails, linux and onion network its all over for big tech and "dream" of thought policing, censorship and mass surveillance and I predict will happen in this coming crash. most business want to sell these things and their only point is to say "these makes BIG money", little do the investors know is that most part of the money are just ppl selling things to themselves just to inflate the prices.
if these things have a very volatile value, zero use and it "costs" the same as a house, noone wants to get close tho that web3

While traditional currencies are powered by trust on governments (it isn't back by any physical assets, i.e., gold). It sound to me this guy is trying to make ppl work on Web3 virtually.
