I've been to Christmas markets in Schwäbisch-Hall, Würzburg, München, and Wien. I really enjoyed the one in Schwäbisch-Hall because it was much smaller and more of a community event, with school kids singing on the steps of the church. It seemed as though I was the only tourist there.
Tip for traveler: You will need cash in Germany and the cheapest way to get it (up to €200) is at a supermarket checkout. This means you just ask the cashier for cash money and on the receipt the item will be cash withdrawal. However, you should buy at least a little something. You save by this the ATM fees, the supermarket does not charge any fees for this, it is a free customer service.
@@Rick2010100 we've got something very similar in the US. Don't know if it's utilized all that often, although occasionally back when weed wasn't legal in my state I'd get my groceries and 40 bucks out for some green lol
⚠‼Attention! Warning! ‼⚠ This ONLY works with so called "Girocards", NOT with VISA or MC (or other providers) credit or debit cards! Girocard is an up-to-now widespread specific German debit card system ONLY available with German bank accounts and even there becoming less and less common. No VISA or MC for supermarket cash service also means no Google Pay or Apple pay using your mobile for paying. It might be available if AP or GP have been connected to your bank account via girocard but that would be very uncommon. Since you need a German bank account anyway this tip won't apply for most tourists/travelers.
Just got back from a Christmas market in The Hague, The Netherlands. Not as big as those in Germany, but very nice. Had a Bratwurst in Brötchen (mit Zwiebeln und Curry), Glühwein, french fries and snert (authentic Dutch pea soup). Unfortunately no fancy cups with Pfand (I would've liked one of those) but only simple paper cups. The weather is the same, be prepared. I prefer a raincoat over an umbrella. A week ago it was even mostly canceled due to the bad weather, now it was only cold. I contrast to Germany debit cards are widely accepted along cash, credit cards are not. Happy holidays, frohe Feiertagen 😉
I always had a great time going to the market in Nuremberg every year. At markets and fests, if I saw a mug I wanted to keep as a souvenir, I'd ask for one up front and simply pay for it.
Excellent idea to go over ways of making a German Christmas Market experience memorable in all the right ways. I’m still trying to figure out why parents here in the U.S. stopped teaching their children basic manners like thank you, excuse me, you’re welcome or please as far back as the early 90’s, it’s all free, everyone benefits. Öhöhöhöhö. I love christmas markets so much. They`re still getting bigger and in the evening you are barely able to move as there are just so many people everywhere. 🤗
Nürnberg Christkindlesmarkt has raised Pfand to €5,- per mug this year. Note that taking the mug with you from the market is not legal (actually theft), even when you paid the Pfand, but it will, of course, not be prosecuted. I guess the reason why they raised it is that too many people believe they can take them as a souvenir.
some of the designs are just too outstandig not to take them home. The drink is called "Feuerzangenbowle". It's wine with orange, lemon and spices and heated up. Then a "Feuerzange" (fire-tongue) is put on top. On this thing you put a sugar cone, soaked with rum, and lit it. Because of that the sugar melts and drops into the wine, making it sweeter and giving it a hint of caramel flavour. It's a pretty popular drink and there even is an old German movie (1940-s) with the name "Die Feuerzangenbowle", which is aired on TV, usually on Christmas Eve.
