  • Agni Parthene / Hieromonk Gregory of Simonopetra (set to music in the 1980s)
Soloists: Amy Hiestand, Jodie Bourdet, Katie Walker, Chris Bennett, Kathryn Schumacher, Joy Craig, Linda Ferris, Peggy Stratton
From our December 2018 program titled "Winter Reflections"
In the season of darkness, we seek light. In the season of stillness, we look deep into our souls and ponder life. This program was an exploration of winter wisdom from sacred and secular traditions found in an ancient Greek Orthodox hymn, an Aboriginal songline, a soft Jewish Shabbat eve tune, a contemporary interpretation of early Chinese philosophy from the I Ching, and a unique rendition of In the Bleak Midwinter, by American composer Frances McCollin, whose blindness in early childhood caused her to see colors when hearing music.

    1. O Virgin pure immaculate,
    our Lady Theotokos,
    R: Rejoice, O unwedded Bride!
    O Virgin mother, sovereign Queen,
you are the fleece all dewy. R
The brightest shining ray are you,
and higher than the heavens. R
    The joy of virgin choruses,
and higher thank the angels. R
More radiant than the heaven’s light,
your own light shines more purely. R
Of all the ranks of heaven’s hosts,
You truly are more holy. R
    2. O Mary, ever-virgin maiden,

O Mary, you are Bride and Queen,

A humble daughter, Queen are you,
    and holiest of mothers. R
    More honored than the cherubim,
more brilliant in your glory. R
You are by far, a greater Throne
    than seraphim unbodied. R
    3. Rejoice, O song of cherubim,
rejoice, O hymn of angels. R
    Rejoice, the ode of seraphim,
the joy of the archangels. R
Rejoice, for you are peace and joy,
    our harbor of salvation. R
The holy chamber of the Word,
    the flower of incorruption. R
    Rejoice, O paradise of life,
    sublime and everlasting. R
Rejoice, you are the tree of life,
the fount of life eternal. R
    4. Our Lady, I entreat you now,
upon you I am calling. R
O Queen of all, I seek your grace,
and bring my plea before you. R
O maiden meek and free of sin,
and our most holy Lady. R
O temple that is greatly blest,
with fervent voice I call you. R
    Protect me from the adversity,
deliver me and help me. R
And deem me worthy to become,
an heir to life eternal. R

Loved this. St. Nectarious helped me during a bout with cancer. I’m grateful for the time that they took to honor the Saint with this version. One can see their devotion by the looks on their faces.

@@kansashoneybadger7899 I understood the text but I find it difficult to understand why women have so bad purposes? The modern world has many issues to deal with! Here in Greece feel the war approaching in the eastern Mediterranean. There are environmental problems and if you want a philosophical search for the meaning of life and for where the world is going today? Sorry for my English.

@@kansashoneybadger7899 I really do not know the problem of illegitimate births in America! It also happens in Greece, but to a lesser extent. However, this attitude seems to concern men also who do not want to get married and constantly invoke financial problems and other difficulties. And this seems to be happening in the western world and not in the eastern Muslim world. But how do we manage this situation that seems to be beyond our control?

That was astonishing!! The only thing I found, personally, a little distracting was the drum. Either was to loud or maybe didn't quite match with the pattern of the hymn which is truly peaceful and serene..Drums are quite the opposite, gives you the sense of alarming and "war like"...so it was conflicting in my ears. Angelic voices and you seem truly happy singing it....
    Greetings from Greece💞

I agree with you. The drum is not conventional, although not exactly un-orthodox. :-) It added at times, but distracted at other times.

Oh my..voices of angels!! With one of the most beautiful hymns of the Greek Orthodox church sang for our Lady!! Thank you so much for singing this! Great voices, great execution, great pronunciation of the Greek language! Only thing that might have been better is if the drum part was not there. This hymn is very peaceful..the drum part is not usual for this hymn or Byzantine music in general. Anyways hope you do more hymns from Byzantine music. Mbravo!!

doesn't the original have the microtonal scale?

    • @WomenSing
      @WomenSing  5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

That is possible. It was composed in the late 19th century and the notation does not indicate microtones, but perhaps that was the practice.

@@WomenSing I thought the creation of this song dated from the XII or the XIII century by what I had already read. If it really is from the 19th century, it was composed in the Byzantine musical style of the XII and XIII centuries, called "Medieval Orthodox".

    • @WomenSing
      @WomenSing  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

@@RicardoBaptista33, this hymn was composed by St. Nectarios of Aegina in the late 19th century. You are correct that it is in the Medieval Orthodox style!

Always some turd on their instrument completely unaware of any type of dynamic finesse in music, ruining the entire recording with their instrumental narcissism. I concur. We can use the program audacity to remove a lot of the noise caused by the drummer.
