    SO an audio guy here- For your use the direct down (pointing the mic) may work the best but a 30% angle (but your right keep it in front not aimed at the head!) is what the experts use normally. That was a great simple explanation done very well. If you really want to step up your audio use a separate audio recorder like a nicer Zoom or my choice the SoundDesign Mix-Pre II series which you buch better pre-amps and XLR connections (I use a Rode NTG-3) with a Shure TwinPlex Lav that is the main mic the Shotgun mic is mainly for backup but it something picks up like a hand clap better than the lav. I know you use your Rode Rodecaster Pro as a mixer but I have not been happy with it’s output (Rumor has it the 2nd generation will offer a better output for camera’s)

    Audio engineer here. Canon camera preamps universally have zero low end for some reason so using a low shelf @ about 200hz adding about 7db or more is totally normal!

    Hey! You changed your channel name! Nice! Great video as well! Agree with all the points about the audio settings for the cameras. I would recommend pointing the mic at your chest - so split the difference between straight down, and right at your mouth.

    Shotgun microphones like VideoMic Pro do not reject sounds from behind as effectively as from the sides, and inside rooms they tend to suffer from interferences. For inside miking, a supercardioid or hypercardioid mic is better - those reject sounds from behind more effectively and don't suffer from interferences. But usually it doesn't matter for YT audio ;)

    Quick question? Do you record, stream and edit on the same computer or do you have a separate area for all 3? I like having a separate area to edit and record. Eventually, I may live stream and edit on my desktop, which is in the same area, but use two different monitors.

    • @tombuck

      I use my 16" MacBook for everything. I sometimes connect it to an external display when working at home, and other times take it with me and use it as a traditional laptop. My old MacBook wasn't powerful enough to stream while doing anything else, but this one seems to be up for it. 😎

      It depends on what your budget is. Camera recommendations are tough, but speaking generally, I think the Canon EOS R is the best overall value. You cna find less expensive options like the Canon RP, Sony a6400, and maybe even the Canon M50, but if you go too far on the budget end things will just end up being frustrating.

    Oh man.... I needed this 3 days ago! :) Finally starting my own channel and did the first video, but the sound was all out of wack, so had to redo it. I figured out most of the stuff (have a Canon M50 with 16mm 1,4 lens), but still some real value bombs here! Will test out the positioning of the microphone. Right now I have it on top of the camera. I invested in the Røde Videomic NGT with adjustable thingies on the back. First it was a lot of hissing/room noise, but once I set down the gain (?) in camera, and adjusted the wheel thingy on the back to 7, it sounds really good (at least to my untrained ear). A bit of a perfectionist and I cannot for the life of me start off with a iPhone video and internal sound, so I bought the mic and the 16mm 1,4 lens and now motivation is super duper :)
    Also, very inspiring to listen to you and Peter's podcast and last episode was great (feat Heather).

    Awesome video man, love your channel because we literally use the same equipment haha.
    Really liked the in depth explanation on mic placement. Like you mentioned I always point my rode video mic pro+ at my subject (when using it at a boom). Which makes sense why it was always picking up ambient noise. Definitely going to try your method next video project!
    Also, when you said to have the 20+ selected on the mic, and the settings turned basically all the way down on camera, would there be much difference if nothing was selected on the rode mic, and the audio adjusted accordingly (in manual) on the eos r? That is typically what I have done.
    Thanks, keep up the great work!

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi Tom. I also have the 24mm SIGMA f/1.4 lens and I love it! I wonder what your solution is to on-the-go recording with that lens and the videomic? You've mentioned in earlier videos that you like using the 24mm SIGMA lens for recording on-the-go. HOW do you get around the annoying autofocus sound from the SIGMA lens? I use the Rode Videomic NTG, which is similar to the Videomic Pro Plus, and it clearly picks up the SIGMA autofocus click noise. In my studio obviously I record my main audio to an external recorder but for on-the-go I record straight in to the camera with my other lenses. I may have to put on an external recorder when using this lens. How do you solve this dilemma?

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey there! My super professional answer is that I just ignore it. I haven’t found a great solution yet, although turning up the mic’s gain (and lowering the camera’s) can sometimes help.

    • @EsbjornLarsen
      @EsbjornLarsen 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Tom Buck Thx, yeah I use the same trick but it doesn't do it well enough. I'm playing around now with different brackets to get the mic a bit higher and further out from the lens. Hopefully it won't pick up so much clicking from the lens when I'm done. The challenge is to make the overall camera package small enough to carry without looking like a reporter and still get the proper quality. I really enjoy your videos.

    • @tombuck
      @tombuck  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Videomic has a long 3.5mm cable that connects it to the camera, and the camera records the audio directly. If I ever use the Rodecaster, I either record internally and then sync the audio in editing, or connect it via USB and select it as an audio source for whichever app I'm using. 👍

      Someone else suggested I should have said, "sound advice for your sound device" and now I'll be kicking myself the rest of the day for missing the opportunity.

    Noticed name change! I think it was a good move. My channel is technically called "the social life of language", however, I'm also a published author and academic and it was SO difficult for people to find my TH-cam. Plus, you can unify all social media accounts too!

    Which camera and mic do you recommend

    • @tombuck

      My equipment is listed in the description but that’s a tough question to answer since there are so many variables with use/budget/environment/etc. the good news is that it’s tough to us a bad cameras these days- they’re all great. As for camera mics, I do love the Rode Videomic NTG.

      @@tombuck in terms of budget do you know any cameras or mics In lower ends of price range like either under 50 or 100

    Not all cameras have an external microphone jack. It is one of the the biggest blocks to recording good audio. You can use a audio recorder then combine in post.
