I cut my teeth on the first Hunter laser reporting head machine. First unit delivered to a School. We were using string before that. The updating was allot slower, and you had to make an adjustment and wait several seconds for it to update the screen. Teacher didn't have the patience, so he assigned me to learn everything about it to then teach to the brake and alignment class. Will never forget that opportunity.
I like that alignment machine !!! Nice !!! A big digital display to look at sure is easy on the eyes. Clamps to the tires is nice too !!! The wife has scratches all over her nice aluminum rims from them rim "" edge "" clamps !!!!! Not a fan of them, or the chalk line on the center of the tire and a tape measure, followed by whacking with a BFH to get it to adjust !!! I sure learned something today watching you work - Mrs. O. makes one hell of a nice BIG sandwich !!!!!! She takes care of you very well !!!!! And I can see why you put in a full service kitchen in the office - with venison dinners, pork chops, slabs of bacon along with a heart healthy salad, all that money $$$ saved on lunch at the town diner !!!!!! SMA is truly a "Work of Art" fine tuned business !!!!!!!! I will now be looking forward to every alignment video you do (No, not for Mrs. O.'s sandwiches), but to learn more about caster, camber, toe in, toe out, and why the tires squeal when you make a slight turn in the parking lot !!!! Wonderful informative video of your superb work, Eric. A job well done !!!!! And I did get pretty hungry when I saw that amazing egg salad sandwich - WOW !!!!!
That's a slick machine. As a DIYer, the best I could ever hope to accomplish would be a rough toe-in adjustment using PHAD Ivan's string method. Thank you for demonstrating how a total alignment should be done with modern equipment.
Nice to see your business expanding and growing, keeping that stuff in house will make you more income, and cut down delays for you customers. It's the way to go!
You are in NY and I am in KY; I would gladly drive the distance between to have you align my vehicles. You do such a thorough, detailed job. Just awesome.
i really enjoyed this video especially as used to work in a Tyre Shop as a a Wheel Aligner/Tyre Fitter. Since my body was not able to keep up due to injury about a year ago i left my job in a workshop and took an office job instead. Since then i still work in they Tyre game but I've taken a desk job working in wholesale. your video really is a great explanation of what happens for a Wheel alignment. That Hofmann alignment machine looks really nice to use, much better than some of the machines i had to work with over the years. I started out in the industry as a Mechanic and i still do mechanical jobs on my own cars and also for family and friends but nothing regularly. I worked as a mechanic before i went into Tyres. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank you Eric O, i get so much out of your videos and even if it's a brake job just being able to view these jobs carried out it refreshes my memory of what things look like and how different repairs are carried out and the steps involved. Honestly throughout my career I've probably absorbed more valuable repair information off TH-cam than any of the Trade school training modules that I've completed. I'm definitely someone who learns better visually and also with practical demonstration. You're awesome and i really am glad you're still creating these great videos regularly, Thank you.
That is a nice machine! It will sure pay for itself in the long run. I learned alignment form a neighbor who did them at a Nash garage years ago using the old style bubble level gauge. One tip I learned from him is if you have a real heavyweight driver that complains that you didn't do the job right, do the job again with him in the drivers seat. If the driver weighs enough, his weight will change the the numbers enough to be noticed when driving or in tire wear.
Everyone needs to tip their hat to Eric here...in the middle of the most severe economic downturn in the past 90 years, Eric has determined to make an investment (even if it is just leased, it's still additional overhead) in the future of his business and commit precious resources during this highly uncertain moment in time....a man who believes the future will be better!! Cheers!
Thanks! We are getting ready to replace our 15 year old Hoffman aligner and have been pulling our hair out trying to decide Hoffman vs Hunter. The interwebs lean to Hunter, but mostly due to good support. They seldom talk about capability. We want to buy from NAPA who wants to sell us the latest Hoffman. After watching you with the Hoffman I think I'm sold. Thanks for a good video - many good videos.
I like the pointers falling into place. Much easier to see from the rear than the one at my shop. And I work on cars for a living, why do I keep watching your vids on my off time? I kid, love your content. I will post them sometimes to show folks what real world auto repair is like. edit: "Green and go", ugh. Years ago, I worked in a place that had to sublet our alignments to the Firestone up the street. Wheel was nearly always off, and it often pulled. Green and go is not good enough, folks.
My how alignment equipment has changed, it highlights progress is great. Like how the alignment sensors attach to the outside on the tyres, less chance of falling off & stuffing the sensors. Great, stay safe mate.
thank you all the time. as one of your fan far away from South Korea, I like you very much , your video is helpful to me on automotive class instruction
I was an alignment technician 20+ years ago. I used Hunter equipment. One thing I find funny is that pretty much every shop offers "free alignment check". It was a rare occurrence to find a car that wasn't out of alignment.
It would be very cool if you had made enough from you tube over the years to cover the cost of this. Than we could say that we bought it in return for all the knowledge and fun you have given us
Excellent. Although it's a week after my first camber/toe front alignment on my Mustang with camber bolts, it's comforting to see them happen the exact same way. No, I don't work in the shop. Shade tree home mechanic. But sometimes they let me 'play' with the machines with my car. I did pretty good, I think. All in the green and centered, and the car steers fantastically. I'm sure glad to have seen this video that confirms I did it right, as nobody taught me the camber bolts. Trial and error, but fairly quickly figured. Thank you *so* much for doing what you do in documenting these things, Eric. Even the plethora of brake videos are both teaching moments and good ASMR or however that's spelled. Each video teaches me something, or at least re-affirms what I do know. Have a good one!
I didn't know what to expect from this video, turns out an alignment by Mr. O is quite interesting. New machine looks great, only one problem now though. No more stopping by the ice cream place on your way to your brother's shop, but there's always the test drives :)
Sweet rack, (no pun intended and not a sponsor), and a-liner setup. I learned first on an old Rotary Laser alignment setup. Crude and dirty but the local PD never complained after I was done and drove away! And yes... I did test drive the cars on a back street with lights and sirens cranked to 11...! Thanks for the vids sir and family!!!
I took a '65 Mustang to a corporate tire shop - they put the tires on but couldn't get it aligned, and said they didn't think it was possible to align. Referred me to an old guy with a mirror machine. I told him what they said; he said "Those kids that work at the tire shop these days don't know what the eff they're doing."
Nice alignment machine Eric! We trained on a Hunter at school we aligned all our vehicles in class. I wanted to reach through the computer screen and grab that egg salad sandwich. Nice. I hope it generates more work for you.
Hey Eric! I'm off work for 4 weeks due to a surgery so I'm catching up on your videos. You are an awesome mechanic and I'm learning a lot from you, even at 61! lol Ray from Salinas,Ca.
Thanks for this. Alignments are a bit of black magic to many and this video helps put things in perspective. That said this poor Mitsubishi sounds like the valve train is ready to throw parts through the cam cover.
If your referring to the lifter tick then that is completely normal, my 95’ Dodge Stealth r/t has a slight lifter tick on a cold start but typical for these cars
Yeah, I could do it...if'n I had a Hofmann Geoliner 678. Alignment machines are very cool. I just had one done on my 02 Sierra a few months back and the guy let me watch as he was trying to bring it all into spec. Fascinating. Thanks for this video!
I think i might make an appointment for an alignment sometime this summer. Even though you're two hours away. After watching this video it looks totally worth it.
Most vehicles back in the day just had a solid live axle in the real and you adjusted the front (the rear wasn't adjustable) and you adjusted the Ackermann Articulated linkage steering for toe. Most all of your trucks that have rear-wheel-drive or rear-wheel-drive based 4-wheel-drive are still made that way. Even on that fancy-dancey machine Eric has you can still take a vehicle with a rear that isn't adjustable and do the same thing. Now, however, most cars are front-wheel-drive and have independent-rear-suspension that must be aligned to the thrust angle (imaginary straight line down the middle of the car) and that is where the machine he has shines because it can compare all 4 wheels and their positions. Great video!
"Whatever way you think it needs to move, go the opposite" Truer words never spoken! 😆 Because 90% of the time, you go the wrong way every time! Also, we have that same lift where I work. Tis a good lift. Yours looks a little nicer right now tho. 7 years of use in upstate NY hasn't been kind to it. Plus I use it for more than just alignments.
I woke up down and out. I have to work (from home) a job I no longer like with people that do not believe in me. Then a SMA video arrives which gives me something to watch while some 3D mag fields render. Thanks.
I hope the derivative of your angst function improves - is negative more often. I find the reports that Anton Petrov (on youtube) produces are very uplifting. You might find it exciting to learn about recent research in astrophysics and cosmology. I do. It shrinks my focus on the painful mistakes that our species is making and increases the focus on appreciation of things that are much more enduring than our few millenia and and I appreciate the members of our species who explore the universe and teach us about things we did not know existed.
Awesome bit of kit! Wish all alignment shops would take this level of care rather than green n go, in spec but at the limit, doesn't take much time to get in nearer the middle as you say.
JUST INSTALLED AFTERMARKET CAM BOLTS "front upper strut eccentric bolts" ON A 1998 NISSAN ALTIMA, no rust! I love California. Camber was out 1.2 degrees left side and 1.6 right side. Now it's perfect! Great timing for me. Thank you for your time and a great video! Jason from San Jose California.

OMFG that system is SO nice! My first experience was with mirrors on sticks, and then we went to lasers, but that thing is awesome! I enjoyed found Mazda MX5s, when I was a Mazda mechanic.
Nice to see you try and center those marks. The Schwab just turns shit into the green and sends it. Although, i did ask for 1 degree of negative camber in the front of my 97 Grand Marquis and they did it. Really helped the massive under-steer problem it had
Just when I thought South Main Auto couldn’t get any better, Eric buys a new alignment machine! Congrats.
Can't be long before he gets in the 4 wheel dyno, eh?
He has the brains be a tuner
New kitchen, new alignment machine. Not being a NAPA sponsor has really paid off.
@@keeganpock864 .w
Boy that sure beats a couple of jack stands and some string
That's how I set my toe-in after replacing an outer tierod on my Totota truck last year. Learned a lot and so far it seems to have been correct.
Oh yeah it definitely works I've done alignment on many cars with just that
Or a sledge hammer and an eyeball.
Same here. I get it within 1/8”
I have try didn’t work
I think Mrs. O is the best, an egg sandwich is a glorious token of love, and friendship.

Now begins the never ending alignment jobs. With Eric saying "I don't know why you people keep watching these". Congratulations Mr.O
This is was cool video on how to wheel alignment a car with a high-tech alignment machine. Thanks for sharing. Retired engineer having fun
Egg salad sammich, YUMMMY.
I have not done an alignment on a car since the mid 80's. This new technology is awesome.

Nice new equipment is always fun to play with
A hundredth of a degree, that is brilliant. We've come a long way from using three strings
Awesome investment
Your alignments are unparalleled.
The tires better be parallel, or it's gonna drive really badly! :)
Alignment tech has come a long way since I used to do it with a Hunter 311 many years ago!
No one would fault you for taking a lot more steering knuckles to the press for wheel bearings now 👍

Back in the late 80´s / early 90´s when i was a apprentice, wheel allignment always was a pain in the butt !!!
GOOD JOB ERIC . WE HAVE AN OLD GUY HERE IN TEXAS THAT STILL USES THE OLD STYLE MIRROR ALIGNMENT MACHINE. HE IS GOOD.
I took a '65 Mustang to a corporate tire shop - they put the tires on but couldn't get it aligned, and said they didn't think it was possible to align. Very good video! As many alignments as I've had done in my lifetime, I've never actually seen how it is done. Congrats on the new equipment.
How does that work?
Breakin' in the new Fluid Film(not a sponsor) shirt on a clean job! Smart!
I dunno. He's not wearing the Jeep hat. Maybe he's working on a sponsorship with Fluid Film!
Baaaaaa? 😉 Well. Maybe 🤔
Wow what a machine, that looks nicer than our brand new hunter!!!!
Great vid. I wish our Hoffman was this up to date.
Very informative video. Sure beats the older methods.
@ 6:30 "Whatever way think it needs to move, go the opposite" How true with so many things!!
And if that doesn't work, go the other opposite way.
Story of my life, John ... 🤣
Sweet Eric. You must be psyched to have that now!
Now that's a great investment for your shop! Congrats!

Nice now you know what goes in a wheel alignment.
Ya done good, Eric! Most shops would get it "Green" and Quit. It's wonderful to see you do an Alignment CORRECTLY!
Learned alignments in 70's on Hunter and old timer taught me to put 100# weights in both front seats simulate driver in car then align ! FWIW
Glad to see SMA embracing opensource!
Nice piece of kit there and being used properly. Need to train Josh up on it next.

Why are you rendering 3D magnetic fields? Are you trying to solve something? Or is it just a project?
@@SergioPena20 Working on some magnetic field shielding for photo-multiplier tubes for my collaboration.

Wait - you woke up down and out, you work from home at a job you don't like with people who don't believe in you...are you me? Am I you?
What an incredible piece of equipment, you would laugh if you saw what I used to use 12 years ago.....F in Uk
Sure beats the Bean Aligner we used back in the 50's. lol
Awesome bit of kit! Wish all alignment shops would take this level of care rather than green n go, in spec but at the limit, doesn't take much time to get in nearer the middle as you say.

"Whatever way you think it needs to move, go the opposite." LOL Man I'm glad I'm not the only one. I tell myself that on every alignment.
Congrats on the new equipment, there is a lot to understanding a proper alignment
Quite a chunk of investment there, but will hopefully pay for itself numerous times over. You deserve to continue to grow fella - indeed, I would say you are one of the best mechanics I have ever seen.
Ahh the Dodge Stealth. What an odd car, but we lusted over some of those back in high school. Same for all those Eagle Talons and stuff......weird times for Chrysler when you think about it.
Wow buddy!!! That is a very nice Alignment Machine you have there!!
I love all your vids!!!!! Personality and knowing what you are doing makes all the difference!!!! Another great video! Keep up the good work!!!!!!!!!!!!

awesome to see it done for real...
Eric does a good job on his Customer's vehicle
Always a pleasure watching your videos Eric. Thanks for posting.
When I get my work trucks aligned, we make sure the truck has the normal load, other wise the alignment goes off when we load'em up. Toe mainly, we'll get inside tire wear. We have to align our route trucks every other tire rotation because CA roads suck. Nice machine, super fancy.

Great job Eric... very nice machine....Wow !!

Been waiting for an alignment video and you did not disappoint! Awesome!
Best, Man Toy Ever and what Rick P said.
Nice to see you try and center those marks. The Schwab just turns shit into the green and sends it. Although, i did ask for 1 degree of negative camber in the front of my 97 Grand Marquis and they did it. Really helped the massive under-steer problem it had
WOW! look at you. A full-service garage now. Looks great Eric.
What an awesome piece of kit makes life much easier thanks Eric O
Fancy shmancy! Big boy time!
