    It's so amazing to see that part of Holborn station was used in the opening credits of Only Fools and Horses! After having to find the opening credits, I had a stare and it is indeed used, at 23 seconds into it you can also see the Underground roundel as well! Alex with another amazing off the fly bit of trivia there! Amazing episode as always from the Fab 4! Having a major binge of all the episodes I can and so far.....utterly amazing!! Can't wait for Series 8!

    A great episode about an interesting and complex station, and you missed a bit! The electrical traction substation, feeding this part of the system, is uniquely dispersed through the station: some dc switchgear in a room at the end of platform 5, high voltage switchgear, etc., in a cross passage and the rectifiers in lift shafts - installing these required a station closure, one Sunday, when they were lifted in through floor hatches in the booking hall. Not an easy site when it comes to manning and working in the substation! Starting with the City and South London Railway, power station at Stockwell, and the Central Line power station at Wood Lane, there is an interesting history to the railway power supply, there would be no working railway without power so perhaps a subject for you one day!

    Hi All, brings back memories when I once rode the branch line to Stand, trying to recall whether I used it from the Holloway Road, as it’s now been 27 years, as of 2021, only ever saw the one platform, shame that the entrance door was covered by white panels, remember the original British Museum station building, it had a take-a-way cafe, liked exploring around the back of it, there was a speed restriction entering Holborn at British Museum due to road laws above.

    Watched this on catch-up. Holborn was where I used to get on and off for my first ever proper job before uni as I worked at the RCS just round the corner in the the late 1980's...couldn't wait to get home again after knocking off at 4.30pm, and so it would be a run to the tube, run down the escalators taking the steps two at a time - it makes me shiver when I think about it - I'd NEVER do that now, how dangerous was I at the tender age of 22 back then!

    At 27:10, the digital clock says 16:20 on the disused platform...about the time of day the evening shuttle would have been running !! I'm surprised they've kept a working clock operational there! (I take it that it does work, and not just "right twice a day..!")

    The style of the arrow, the flight of which appears to pierce the ring of the roundel, is also indicative of the sign’s age. This device, commonly known as ‘Mexican arrow’, was used on signs from the mid-1920s until the 1960s as a unique graphic tool and also added familiarity to the brand London Transport. The use of four flights to the arrow dates it to the years either side of 1930. By c1932 it was used with three flights and later decades saw the number gradually drop to two, then one and finally none

    It might be worth mentioning that during the early years of operation a through a train for theatregoers operated late on Monday to Saturday evenings from Aldwych (Strand) through Holborn and northbound to Finsbury Park. Being direct, no change was required at Holborn.

    I've always found the decision to make Platform 6 at Holborn a dead end Bay Platform and Platform 5 had a connection with the main Piccadilly Line. I wonder if this played a factor in why the Aldwych struggled for customers so much

    Hi Guy's , Does the Aldwych branch connected to the Northbound main Piccadilly line slightly north of Holborn ?

  • @ianmcclavin
    @ianmcclavin 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It's funny how the likes of St John's Wood, Swiss Cottage, Bethnal Green, Highgate, Aldgate East, etc, we're deemed worthy of having their original platform features retained, albeit "like for like" replicas in some cases, whereas they were quite happy to sweep away the decor on the Central Line platforms at Holborn, in favour of a more modern design. (Fotuneately , the original tiles may not have been destroyed; methinks they're lurking behind the panels fitted in the 80's!!)

    • @alexgrundon2346
      @alexgrundon2346 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it’s down to WHEN the refurbishments were done. From conversations with people who know, the view is now to retain original or replace with similar for heritage purposes but I suspect when Holborn was modernised that view was not yet established. Holborn was pretty tired when it had its panels installed on the platforms.

      @@alexgrundon2346 Yes, also re: the southbound Jubilee Line platform at Baker Street which was in situ as one of two southbound Bakerloo platforms before the construction of the Jubilee Line, and used to be in the same style as the St John's Wood and Swiss Cottage platforms, sadly I still can't find any photos.

    A question for the tube historians out there, was the section from Holborn to Aldwych (originally Strand)!a remnant from initial tunnelling of the Great Northern and Strand before being bought up by Charles Yerkes and merged with the Piccadilly and Brompton?

    • @extrude22
      @extrude22 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No, it was built when the main part of the Piccadilly line was built, I believe the initial plan was to extend it south of the river

    One thing I always associate with Holborn is its splendid main escalator shaft with four escalators in it; although you show us a picture of it, unless my mind was wandering you didn't mention how unusual it is to have four escalators in one shaft. Does this happen anywhere else on the Underground?

    • @JP_TaVeryMuch
      @JP_TaVeryMuch ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Off the top of my head, the one example that springs to mind is the shaft at Liverpool Street leading to the Elizabeth line. It's not quite what you asked for but if you count the inclined lift to the side then yes there's four in one shaft.

      It's bricked up at platform level which you can see from the train.
      The surface part is long gone though but there'll be an emergency staircase still tucked away somewhere.
      Various series have covered it, certainly Jago Hazzard has done. I have an image in my head of Siddy and Tim peering through a mesh gate onto the running tunnel from their TV programme "Secrets of the London UndergrounD."
