I had recently stumbled upon Kaneko Works vol 5 while out at a foreign bookstore, and despite the immense excitement and chance to purchase.... I left it behind. I love his works they're all amazing, but I had realized it would be better to just get the volumes based upon the titles I really want to see the art for! Unfortunate that the final volume seems to be lackluster because the absence of care/complications, and the print/design segment almost brought me back to my college classes; hopefully viewers find that just as neat as I did! But in short glad there are others who agree the entire series isn't worth to collect. Also hey Larrue!
Sums up everything for me. I could not believe the loss in quality with volume IV when I first received it. The paper, the printing, even the dust cover. I would have much rather paid a premium for quality than the manifested obligation that released. I stopped buying them after V. They are better than Pandemonium's quality but not by much and those are much more joyful books to own with proper care put into them. I can't believe how shoddy some the bleeding spreads and their are in volume X. This all just feels so unusual for a Japanese company where it's almost industry standard for art books to be high quality, especially for an important legacy artist like Kaneko.
That is kinda of sad. When I buy an artbook normally is to get things I cant find anywhere with a care and dedication for that art. The way some of those pages are done is just sad .
I'm so glad you made this video because for a long time I've been on the fence about buying one of these Kaneko Works books. I still might buy one that's affordable because I'm just that much of a sucker for growing my SMT collection. Still It was super interesting to hear a fresh perspective about the details of these books from someone who worked in graphic design / printing and knows what they're talking about. There's not a lot of information about these books online and what's actually inside them so I greatly appreciate you going out of your way to compile all this history and details into one place for people such as myself to learn about. By far the original print of vol.3 is the best of this series. Since Kaneko and Megumi Shiraishi are not credited in the later books of this series, I have a feeling Kaneko doesn't really get any share of the sales, so for me, a Kaneko's fan, don't feel very guilty of skipping vol.10.
Really sad to see one of their most iconic names being treated like this. I have said before that this that they have been doing with Kaneko has nothing to do with respecting him, but more like they are trying to cut him away.

I really want to get this book but only so I can get a scan of that resurfaced art in there. The artwork of the Joker persona with all the possessed characters from Eternal Punishment looks so clean. But there's no scans of it online, its a real shame because that's easily become one of my favorite pieces he's made just from the blurry picture I've seen of it.

Bleed is the reason why tabloid for example (11x17) has a slightly bigger format (12x18), I can't excuse that layout either. Doesn't make me hate the book series but kinda saddens me. Might get vol. 1 as I love SMT1 and might think if I want the rest or probably go for your recommendations instead. Cheers!

Not gonna lie, I'm disappointed with those books. Not sure if I want to spend a small fortune importing those to have a subpar product. But at the same time, it's THE Kaneko... I feel they wouldn't even finish the series under different circumstances, but kinda forced themselves through it. If Kaneko 'disappearing' is any indication, I can imagine them not getting any new interviews because the man just doesn't care anymore. Kinda sad :(

Can you please help and explain how to send in the reward? Is the reward still valid for resident who lives outside Japan? I have collected all 10 volumes but I don't know how to fill in the reward form which is written in Japanese. Even the adress to send into is in Japanese so I don't to how to translate the recipient address into English on the letter in order to send it.
Uh to be honest with you, I don't know how to go about it if you don't live in Japan. There's this reward slip you need to cut out of the obis or the sleeve if you have a first print of 1,2,3 then you send that on the paper to the address. It's got more to do but like I said I don't know how to do it if you aren't in Japan.
