    I always found the 'SMT x FE turning into TMS' thing super weird because this was announced years after Devil Survivor, an SMT strategy RPG, was released with a sequel not long after (2009/2011). They had everything they needed right there but then it didn't happen.

    An SMT IV on the vita with the Vita’s power would’ve allowed for full 3D battles, which would’ve made it hands down the best MegaTen and best JRPG ever. Only thing is nobody woulda bought it cause, Vita. Lol

      @@KaiMCGRPS oh I def love the sprites as well, ppl complain about no 3D and it honestly doesn’t bother me but if they would somehow be able to pull it off w SMT V engine and graphics that game woulda looked absolute crazy bro

    • @GrandBenja
      @GrandBenja 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@juanrubio5479 I prefer 2D SMT as well.
      - In fights, you get shorter, straight to the point animations. You can focus on what's important (strategies), instead of wasting your time watching animations every time a spell is used. A big, long Megidolaon animation is cool the first time you watch it; it quickly gets boring afterwards.
      - Those 2D sprites leave more to the player's imagination.
      - Finally, as SMT V showed, a 3D engine can be a time sink for the developers. All the time they wasted on their 3D could have been used to write a better story, refine the gameplay, build harder bosses, etc.

    I like how they bullshit around the whole thing about strategy RPGs and it not fitting Atlus, yet Majin Tensei 1+2, Another Bible and Ronde exist. We really could have had Majin Tensei but with Fire Emblem characters as summoners. And of all people, Takata suggesting that...
    Ah well, it's tiring but whatever. At least most of the cool systems from TMS got carried over to SMTV's gameplay so I can let it slide.

    I have always been fascinated by megaten games since I read about Persona for PS1 in a gamepro magazine since then I have been trying to play the games but with so many games exclusive to Japan and so many consoles like a megaten for original xbox(wth) and so many weird releases and really difficult to find those games in my country back then, I only play what I can. That is why I love your content so much because that's the only way I can expirience old megaten games, thank you.

    It's unfortunate we will never get a proper crossover with mainline Shin Megami Tensei and Fire Emblem.
    It's baffling that the final product has more in common with Persona than Shin Megami Tensei (Persona 4 Golden and Person 5 Royal are strong games in their own right, but I did not expect the crossover to have its atmosphere take so much influence from that subset of games). Not to mention it's also truly strange said product wasn't a SRPG; considering that Majin Tensei, Another Bible (even if the GB version is not all that good), and especially the Devil Survivor games exist.

    This might not count since it wasn't intended to be a commercial product to begin with, but I'm a little surprised to not see any mention of the tech demo for a 3D action game in which the player controls Cerberus, developed solely to test out animations and movement in SMTIII. The only footage of this that I know of is from an interview in which the devs simply state what it is and why they made it while in the process of planning SMTIII. Even though it wasn't meant to end up as a finished game, and it might have been very basic, it's interesting to me that they went through the trouble to make something unique and so different from the kind of game that SMT is just for the sake of testing. I keep thinking to myself that it would be neat if we ever got to see that in a playable state somewhere, maybe as an optional minigame in a major Atlus release.

    1st person megaten on the wii is the most interesting thing here. All of Atlus' 1st person dungeon crawlers are still the typical grid-based ones with only horizontal camera movement. A lot of more modern 1st person dungeon crawlers have the movement less restricted to grids and allow you full camera movement. That would have worked amazingly on the wii with the nunchuk as movement and wii remote as camera control. This would have allowed them to be a lot more creative with dungeon design, I also think that motion controls could have allowed for some interesting puzzles or even a unique battle system. Its a shame that all the consoles now don't allow for as creative game design as when Nintendo had the Wii and DS/3DS. I hope they at least make another dual screen console one day

      Wii U got TMS and it was actually good, so is the switch remaster. If you can get past the bright pop art check it out. The same team just made SH2 and everyone hates it; it’s by far one of my favorite SMT games I’ve ever played and I despised the first 5 hours so much I wanted a refund. (Glad I didn’t I literally like it more than smtv.) my point is, the tms/sh2 team is misunderstood. Sh2 is incredible, hope it comes to switch too. I swear I like it almost as strange journey or smt 3 or 4. Ive been defending it like crazy.

      @@Larrue word! Subbed. I’m watching it now. If you love or hate it it’s all good. I can tell you’re a fan that knows smt, so I’m interested on your thoughts. Most people just think it’s generic, which until I got a few hours in I agreed with that. I think the TMS team is great, but they have trouble landing a core “vision” for their products. As one of atlus 3 rpg teams, for a 2nd game I think they stuck the landing. Narratively the cultural stagnation explained bluntly as “cities haven’t changed in decades,” was super cool to me. Though tonally I really don’t like the pop anime look as much as mainline games or og DS.

    Speaking SMT Vita game, there's some SH2 hater in 5ch thinks SH2 is originally a scrapped Vita game that is brought up again.
    Originally I don't think this true but after I seen SH2's dungeon and environment...

    • @GG256_
      @GG256_ 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sh2 is one of my favorite smt games and im not even kidding. A lot of atlus games have subpar dungeons; the game was made to focus on demons as elemental equipment builds, COMP weapon builds, and FIGHTS. (Its crazy on hard.) i love it dude. Level design isnt one its strengths, and no game is perfect, but at first i HATED SH2. (So much i wanted a refund.) then once i got about 5 hours in and got the side quests from the soul matrix combined with the requests and upgrades plus soul links, i was in love. It is a true devil summoner game. If you havent tried it and like combat heavy atlus games, (and can get past the cyber punk anime pop art style) i implore you to try it. The character writing is leagues above most smt titles and having an extrovert expressive protag rocks

    Devil buster sounds like it was split up and its concepts pushed into If and Makken X. That reminds me of what i heard once about 2 games planned for PS2 but "cancelled" after the dismal performance of DDS. The age of the PS2 as a system most likely had a hand in that outcome as well. I would guess the lack of viability of the Sega CD peripheral is what caused this game to never make it to market.
