So for those that are mathematically inclined-you may have noticed I messed up with the numbers in the text overlays (Michael did)! I've added all the CORRECT numbers to the description box, as well as the CORRECTLY spelled link to Edmunds! So glad that so many of you have found this helpful!
Thank you sooo very much for this fabulous information!
I’m a widow and need to lease a car soon so your insight is very valuable to me!!! I noticed the video was a couple years old, would the information be the same today? Thanks again, Candace
I can't believe there is a financially responsibly person out there that will not benefit from this information at some point. Information is key. Thank you.
Tysm my son is buying or leasing a car this weekend and he is going with his grandma in a different state than us. So timingly. I shared the link to my husband and my son. So my son who looks like a 12 yrs old could look smarter when he is shopping for a car this weekend. Tysm again. Very helpful! Aha moment. lol
Best of luck!
I have truly missed the M&M videos. You all always provide helpful information to help some of us in our adult lives. I know you have helped guide me through a lot of things since I have discovered your channel.
This was GREAT! Thanks Michael, and Marnie thank you for being the US in the discussion. I know my husband does these types of calculations before we buy our cars, the “know before you go” to the dealer. But, (funny story) we were looking for a commuter car for me, hybrid with great gas mileage, and I don’t like the Prius - so, I found the Honda CRZ. Started shopping online, and “low balled” the dealer and he took our offer. Then we find out . . . (I wanted a standard transmission) that they were probably so glad we came in . . . I had to drive it off the showroom floor because NO ONE could drive a standard! There is a meme of a stick shift on the internet - being a millennial auto theft devise - LMAO Morale to the story, you don’t know until you ask, and it doesn’t cost anything to ASK!
I just made a lease purchase for the first time in my life... I thought I had done my research, but this is a video I wish I had seen earlier. I will put it in my favorites to refer back to in 3 years 😬
I feel I got a good deal, but information is power, and I’ll be better equipped next time! Thanks guys😁
My husband has been in the car business for 30 years as a sales and leasing manager in Canada and I have always leased my vehicles for the same reasons Marnie does. If you find a good dealership that has been in business for a long time AND a salesperson you like - purchasing or leasing a vehicle does NOT have to be painful at all. We are at our place in Scottsdale right now and are renting a Toyota Camry and don't like this car at all but my husband normally drives a truck for his hockey equipment and I always drive new Cadillac so maybe we are just spoiled a little. Everybody wants a deal but you need to remember that the dealership needs to make money as well so the employees can be paid. The car depreciates the moment you drive it off the lot. In Canada sometimes you can also get employee pricing. Just make sure you are not "upside down" in your lease because you want a low monthly payment. Leasing to me is peace of mind and a new car every 3 or 4 years. This is good advice but sometimes you just need to walk away and look elsewhere. 💕💕
I just purchased a car using the Costco program for the first time. Did loads of research and test drives first, but this was sooo easy!
I was just diagnosed with hypothyroidism last week AND we’re leasing a new car this week. So glad I stumbled upon your videos. This was CRAZY helpful! Thank you both.
Interesting perspective! I've only ever purchased my cars with cash because it was ingrained in my head from my wealthy family that leasing is throwing money away. Safety features don't change so frequently as to need a new car every 2-3 years. I don't remember the last time safety features even changed so significantly that everyone was suddenly unsafe on the road. I purchased my first car by myself at 18 with money I made working through high school and it built my confidence in car buying so I never needed anyone there with me. I've also never had to pay for anything outside of the warranty. Sometimes I think leasing is for "fear-based" car owners and it's a way for the dealers to get over on people. Thanks for opening up the conversation! It's great to hear from the other side and your reasons for it. I bet you are also able to write off the lease for MsGoldGirl so that's a big reason as well. Whatever works for us individually. Congrats on the 100k.
It is nice to hear different perspectives. We do buy our other vehicles outright with cash. I personally like upgrading all my tech stuff-phones, computers, etc, so I guess cars fall in that category too. I absolutely cannot write off my car lease! We’ve been leasing long before I even knew TH-cam existed. For us, as long as our lease payment is well within what we’ve allotted in our budget, it works.
Oh yes, technology does change quickly!
only if it's used for business
She uses it to drive to meetings and Nordstrom so I'm sure she can.
We are not wealthy by any stretch, but have always bought cars with money that we have saved. Not new, by any means, but totally within our budget, and my last car was 16 years old when it finally died. I got a 3 yr old car last Summer, and with good maintenance, expect it to last at least 7 more years. I never cared about a status car, just one that did the job, safely, and could negotiate New England winters. Not a new concept, I know, but I'm sure there'll be many who say we are lucky to be able to do that, I choose to think that it's not luck, just living within our means.
Thank You, Michael!!! This is a fantastic Video full of valuable information!!! I appreciate you taking your time and sharing your knowledge with all of us!!!
One of my favorite aspects on leasing cars is that when you are finished with the lease- you make an appointment with a dealer to turn it in. No finding a buyer and doing a safe money transaction or negotiating a trade in price. We have learned that it is beneficial to us to do the pre-inspection before turn in, if available. Plus we do end of year leasing- lots of incentives for the dealer not to take vehicles into the next year- if you can time it that way.
Michael and Marnie, thank you for a very informative lesson that I intend to watch over and over again.
I was just wondering when there was gonna be another M&M Monday video and what do ya know? Here it is! Very informative video! Loved it and helped me understand the car buying process so much more! He explains everything so well! Great video, hope to see more videos with the both of you!
How to start playing golf...my teenage son just went to a golf camp for a week and loved it! He was given my father-in-laws old clubs that are way too short for him. What to look for when ready to purchase for a new young adult, lessons, needed equipment. Come on Michael, you are the man for this! : )
I LOVE MARNI AND MICHAEL MONDAYS/MOMENTS! When the hubs and I first got married we used your budgeting tips as a baseline. This video couldn’t have come at a more perfect time as we are now looking for a car! We’ve debated buying/leasing AND really were nervous walking into any dealership. Thanks for educating us!!
P.S. would you recommend putting money down on the lease? Would that negate the .005 money factor?
Great Info: Hubby buys - I lease (because low mileage is key on the lease) just works out that way best for us. If I had a LOT of driving to do ... well.... not so much! Also, finding a REALLY reputable dealership AND having your own usual salesperson car after car helps too, cause he/she will advise you on upcoming events that impact you! ALSO lots of big companies have incentives with manufacturers, so that would come off of Michael’s final price too! But having said all that, back in the day as a single mother I got “screwed” several times on car purchases never dreaming you had to “play this game” !!! With age comes information and smartness 😘. Thanks Marnie and Michael
If I am buying, I personally like to buy cars that are gently used and have suffered through some (or all) of the early stages of depreciation which occurs quickly on a brand new car. Finding a gently used “lease turn in” or demo car might be a good way to go if I am thinking about tendering cash to purchase a car. Unfortunately, cars depreciate, and in my opinion, cars are just not good investments. I like to consider the circumstances, and then see if I can mitigate against what is a negative investment (and maybe lessen the degree in which that investment loses value, knowing that with cars, they will only continue to lose value).
Came strait over after watching "your money questions answered"...lol ..I wish, I had followed you sooner and seen this before buying our car... great video saved it for the next time ;)
Such a helpful video! There are so many unknowns when purchasing/leasing a car, you can never have enough info to negotiate the lowest possible price. Thank you!!!
Great job, guys! I worked for a major automotive finance company for over 20 years, and this is good, reasonable information for people to know. Another idea when buying/leasing: Dealerships typically have current model year vehicles that have been used as demo (test drive) vehicles available for sale or lease. These vehicles can be a less expensive way of getting a low mileage current model used vehicle.
That’s what we tend to buy when we do buy (if they’re available)! Thank you!!
Great video! You crammed a lot of valuable information into a short time frame. Michael explained the process very clearly.
So helpful! Would Michael be able to walk us through the calculations of buying a car too? Y'all mentioned that the calculations are slightly different when buying rather than leasing. Please tell Michael thank you for taking the time to educate us on things to consider in the process! I appreciate it!
I could never do a lease because I average 20k miles per year just from driving back and forth to work and errands etc. We own oue vehicles outright and although they are both outright we have never run into safety issues.
This was fantastic!! Thank you so much for doing this. I learned a lot! I am starting to look at cars,. We usually buy used because of the depreciation. Great to hear about these sights and the formula that would help us to make a wise offer. Again, thanks for this video.
I found this video to be very helpful. Thank you for sharing. I am in the process of buying a car. I usually like to wait till November or December at the end of the month because it is near the end of the year and dealerships need to get rid of old inventory especially if they have overstock on a certain model. When I purchased my first vehicle in 2011 I decided to go with an Equinox LT and I only paid 15,000k drive out because they had an overstock. Hopefully, I get the same luck this year 😊
Man, I wish I’d have known this stuff when I bought my car in April! Such great info ♥️
Car buying totally stresses me out! I get anxiety every time we go to trade. Yikes! But now maybe I won't feel so victimized with all this good information! Thank you for this video!
Wonderful advice!! Thank you for sharing this info. Saves a lot of time and research.
Whilst this video doesn’t apply to me, I think it’s great you and Michael took the time to make it and help others out xx
I know this video is 3 years old. My question…How do I know when I am wanting to purchase a used car? Are there any tricks? Great video. Thank you so much! 💕
👋 hahaha Michael s Face at the beginning hearing about sales was so funny
Great Video
Thanks so much for this video, it was very informative and super-helpful. I always hate going to the dealership and never feel like I really know what's going on. But this video really helps me to know what a good bottom line is for buying/leasing a vehicle. Thanks to Michael for sharing his knowledge!!❤❤
This is awesome information! I hate buying cars because of the haggling! Now I know that it's reasonable to offer 3-5% over the true dealer cost or look elsewhere. My husband and I will be looking for a car in the next couple of years, plus we need to get something for our son. Do you have any tips for buying a first car for a young new driver? I'm also interested in all the new safety features like the automatic emergency front collision braking and whether we should make sure that is included in the car we get for our son. Thanks so much for sharing! :-)
Fantastic!!!!!! When we moved over here we got ripped off terribly with a car lease it doesn’t help that when you come over you start from scratch with your credit score, even though we had a good one at home. Very interesting video thank you both xxx
I agree it’s completely important to know this information. My husband is really great at negotiating our lease rates. Michael did a great job of explaining this 😊.
Oh, I need a Michael in my life! Lol, thanks for all the great info! I did not realize all there is to it, great video Marnie!❤️
My dad was a car salesman for about 25 years. Definitely do agree with what Michael said about finding a car that's been sitting a while. They are usually willing to negotiate price more if it's been sitting there because they want to get it off their lot. Especially if it's near the end of the year and they are trying to make room for the new inventory.
Fantastic video and soooooo helpful. I'm going to share it with all my friends. Thanks guys!!!!
Loved this so much! So helpful and informative! It is empowering to feel knowledgeable and informed in your purchases especially for things as intimidating as purchasing or leasing a vehicle. Thank you!
Wow!! Thank you!! I am just getting ready to buy a new Toyota Rav4 and this was amazingly helpful!! Made my day!!!
The lease payment is only one portion of owning a car. I am more interested in the total cost of ownership and was wondering how you factor in insurance and maintenance costs. You maybe able to get a great deal on a lease but if the insurance is prohibitively expensive this could negate any deal obtained. Maintenance can also vary cost wise depending on the make and model of the vehicle. How do you incorporate this into obtaining a good deal.
It was extremely interesting. Thanks and I love how organized you both are. All this made perfect sense. I will be passing this on to others, especially our kids.
This was great! I just got my 8th (I think) lease in December but this was so very helpful for next time. Thank you for doing all the research and making the video. These are great! How to pay for college and/or save for retirement would be my suggestions. Thank you!
Awwww! Your hubby is so cute! I love this M&M video! Thanks for the info. I'm the car researcher and my hubby is along for the ride. We always play good cop, bad cop when we buy cars. He's the good cop and I'm the bad :-)
I can't imagine ever driving few enough miles to ever be able to lease; however, I love numbers and this made it so easy to understand. Keep 'em coming!
Marnie this is going to be so helpful, as my husband and I will be buying a new car next month. I appreciate all of you and Michaels help!
Very helpful information. My head was swimming but as you said, it may require watching several times to soak it up. Came at a perfect time for me. Thanks!
I appreciate Michael's willingness to share.
This was helpful. Thank you both! My husband is also very good at researching vehicles before hand and negotiating the deal. We always purchase our vehicles.
Than you so much for this video. I found this so helpful because I HATE, HATE, HATE , car shopping. I'm never sure if I got a fair price on the car and then there's the financial part to add to the stress. Great job Michael!
Thank you Michael!!! I second the idea below to get Michael's opinion on how to shop for a reputable contractor and how to negotiate the work.
I loved this video! Buying/leasing a car is so overwhelming and i always feel like i can’t be an advocate for myself. This was so great!
I'm so glad this was helpful for you! My main intention was to give you the tools so you could be your own best advocate!
Oh Marnie..I have been taking cabs for 3 weeks....I have a Chrysler300 picked out at 6 different places...I am single and pretty scared to make the deal! PERFECT timing!!! xxooo Susan
I wish this video was available last year when I bought my son his first car. We went looking for a used car, I wanted to find one for 10k and left with a newer car and a car loan for 20k. Not what I really wanted to do but decided that my son would have a car for many years to come. This was quite informative, thank you!
Super useful info! You two did a great job of presenting this in a clear but not condescending way. I feel WAY more knowledgeable about the process now! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!
This came at a perfect time as I’m in the market for a new car! I’m still debating over leasing or buying but this is sooooo helpful. Thanks for the insight!
Marnie I’m looking to buy a used vehicle can Michael do a video on buying a used vehicle
That's a great idea! I need to get a new "used" car soon!
When we buy a new to us vehicle, we rarely buy a brand new one! We try to find a very low mileage, same year or very recent model year. Gently used as Michael likes to say. We’ll put that topic on the list!
Marnie Goldberg please!!! & how about first cars for your teens 😬. I can barely handle first week of high school, nevermind being able to get a restricted driver permit (I’ve put that on hold till Christmas...too much new in our lives)
@@lavettelane I hear you. I have a freshman and 7th grader. Where does time go?! 😂
Beth S. Freshman & 8th grader 😫
Great job!! I love watching the both of you and I find the topics very practical and helpful. I can't wait to catch another one! Thank you, Marnie :).
Thank you Michael and Marnie😊 I am purchasing a vehicle this week, so this info. Is very helpful and timely. Hugs to you both from Chicago😎
My lease is up next year and we’re also looking to buy a new car within the next 2 years. This information was so helpful! I did take notes. Lots of information!! Thank you!
Thank you for sharing all the research and experience! So generous of you both.
Thank you so much for this video! It is helpful but it was a lot of info! Would love to see more of this type of info. Very helpful!
Great information and will come back to this video a few times. I will go to the websites. I was able to follow the numbers. Thank you for flashing the numbers on the video as well this helped alot. Next year i'm in the market for a new car and have started to shop/look.
Firstly, thank you both for this EPIC post! We are replacing our cars currently so this couldn't be more useful, and ever so carefully explained, that even I get it!! I am not a numbers girl. Eeek!
I appreciate your joint posts so much... love your smiles, you two!
Go Marnie and Michael!
Thank you to both of you!!! I loved this video. Knowledge is power!
Great and very interesting. Does Michael think it’s a good idea to buy your lease after the term is up?
It depends on the car. When we lease, we do not do it with the intention of buying at the end of the lease.
This was great guys! Thank you for the info on something that we all have had to do and dred!😉 Very helpful!
Great video and super information! Please do a Part Two for buying a car with and/or without a trade in. Thank you so very much. Appreciate all your efforts on our behaves. Enjoy! 😍🤗
Thanks Michael ~ So interesting! Making sure save this video and sending it to my kids.
Thank y'all for this! I am very much a numbers person so this was super educational. Praying we won't need this for several more years since our cars are now paid off, but I'm going to start playing around on those websites to see numbers and models and get familiar with the thought process in preparation.
Great info video Marnie! Michael has such a great vocabulary..you both do!
Loved this video! Thank you M&M for sharing your input! I am personally in the market for a Tahoe that is a couple of years old. I like what Michael said about not being so picky on color or to be more flexable on what exactly I want on the vehicle. My question is; what is the benefit to leasing vs. paying cash for the vehicle?
If you're buying something that has immediate depreciation, like a brand new car, then as soon as you buy the car you've lost money. At least with a lease, as long as the monthly payment is something that is well within your budget, you're hopefully keeping the bulk of your money in something that is invested in something that is growing, not depreciating. But either way, a car is not a good investment of money. We have personal experience in both circumstances.
Loved this! It came right when I needed it, we are pregnant with our fourth child and will have to buy a new car to fit all the fam😊 Great video, I love seeing your guys together👍🏻
I love you guys together and this is so helpful, thanks!!
Great video Marnie & Micheal. 💐 Good basic info for those who care to use it. 😊
Great video. In general, is it better to lease or purchase? I know many factors can can influence this decision. However, let’s say there’s a possibility of wanting to keep the vehicle after the lease. Should someone even bother to lease in that situation? I hope that makes sense, I have the question in my head but not sure how to ask it.
Excellent video. We leased our last car, a Lexus ES in 2013 and ended up buying it. It has under 13k miles if you can believe it....city living. Would love a video on retirement/savings/investment.
Thanks for such a great video! Awesome job explaining this process Michael and great questions, Marnie, as how to be prepared before making such an important purchase or lease. Thanks again and Great job M & M!
This was very helpful. Thank you both for taking the time to do this!
why are there so many downvotes? i am not from the us so did i miss something, was the information wrong? because to me it sounds very informative and interesting!
There seems to be a regular group of haters that immediately go to Marnie’s videos (and others, too, I’m sure) as soon as they’re posted and give a thumbs down, just for the sake of it. Losers need to get a life!
Yes, Michael did a fantastic job at explaining everything! I have a feeling that some people might not be able to grasp the concepts and gave it a thumbs down! :)
indeed. things like that i don't get. a person who gets something out of that probably doesn't like themselves and takes it out on others.
This was super helpful! It was nice to have a specific example with details. Thanks!
Very well explained. Thank you for sharing and keeping us informed and educated. This type of videos will set you apart from GRWM. Hasta Luego
Wow! That was great. I’m an accountant so I followed the numbers pretty easily. Thanks for the tips!
🙌🏽. This was incredibly helpful!!! 😍. Next...college budgeting ❤️❤️❤️ (and what manufactures do you guys think best)
Thank so much for the information and also that it was explained in a way that is easy for me to understand! You guys have a wonderful weekend 😍😍😍
Terrific video & perfect timing because I'm going to a Toyota dealership tomorrow. Hopefully, I'll leave with a Rav4! Thanks for the helpful tips☺
Love it. Can you discuss the insurance and all the other crap they offer during the buying process?
thanks for this video. We are a "keep the car for a long time family" so it is always hard to remember how it all works.
Thank you Marnie! This is very helpful. You two are adorable. Great couple.
I enjoyed this M&M moment, even though I am not in the car market now. Love the moment.
Perfect timing since I am too looking for a new vehicle! And I like Michael in the videos.
Thank you, thank you to the both of you! Very helpful information! Love your videos Marnie.
Very informative and interesting - Thank You both. Excellent presentation and support figures and links. In the past we have purchased new considering what we wanted/needed, and the potential resale value. Then, with the availability of searching the internet, we have purchased new -used finding options that fit our needs with 13,000, or less, miles and then having the car shipped to us. Now we are considering leasing so this information is particularly helpful. And, don’t feel bad about your number of cars. I was embarrassed when a few years ago we were insuring six vehicles for a family of two - a personal car for each of us, two pick-ups, a motor home and a tow vehicle for that - eek! Now we only insure four as we no longer have the motor home. Ridiculous!
I learned a lot, and I've done all of these transactions many times. What do you guys think about those low lease payment offers Mercedes Benz etc do with a huge cash due at signing?
It’s hard for us to justify putting significant money down on a lease (says Michael).
The also agree about the unlikes - you clearly put in the description what it was about. And Michael did a wonderful job. People are crazy🙄
Super informative! Thank you Michael and Marney! I love numbers and will apply this method when I need another car. Currently in a 2008 H3 with 150k miles and will drive until wheels fall off. 😜 In the meantime saving money. I don't like financing.
Great info, would love one on an outright purchase from a dealer. Thanks!
Seriously, so informative! Love useful M & M Moments!
Excellent video. Michael is one sharp dude! Thank you so much for putting this together.
