  • A tutorial to show how to use the Polygon tool to hide existing auto generated buildings and how to bring in scenery that exists in the game to replace the auto generated scenery.
    Finally, it shows how to bring the custom scenery project package into your Flight Simulator game via the Community directory.

    I finally figured it out. For those following me this is a very good video and you can do it. FT is fast because he is on his game. I am a beginner. Therefore, carefully follow every step and it will work. Pause when needed and resume. I missed a few steps so it took me about four attempts in between times of frustration. I added lights to a local GA airport where I live and it is beautiful. Coffee is forth coming. I was ready to hire somebody so the least I can do is treat you to coffee. Now I will probably go nuts editing scenery. 😊

    Was struggling with this for days until I found your tutorials. Was missing a couple of vital steps which you clearly showed here. I now have a large donut sitting on the beach near one of the airports I flew out of in the 1980s! Thanks for the help!

    I really appreciate your videos. I use FSEconomy heavily with MSFS. I built an FBO at an airport that didn't have runway lights and generic buildings instead of hangars. Using your videos, I gave the runway lights, installed better looking hangars, and got rid of some pesky trees at the end of the runway. Thanks for your help!

    Thank you for all your excellent tutorials. I have noticed after much trial and error, that polygon exclusions don’t always work if you you only exit to the main menu then load a flight to inspect your new scenery in flight. Restarting MSFS2020 then loading your flight to inspect your new scenery will fix the problem and your polygon exclusions should work.

    Thanks for this!! The airport I first flew out of in my grandfather's airplane back in 1978 had no scenery at all! Just a couple fuel trucks (which aren't there in real life). I now have it corrected the way it really is. Great tutorial!!

    Good video. I appreciate you sharing your knowledge. I was very disappointed with FS 2020 on my first flight. I live in Rocky Mount, NC and Rocky Mount - Wilson Int'l Airport is about 10 miles from my house. So of course, that was the first airport I selected to take off from. No 3-D facilities at all were at this airport. Nothing but flat 2-D. What a disappointment. Well , now I have 7 hangers, terminal bldg., 6 other support facilities, trees, bushes, fences, traffic lights, support equipment. and other misc. items. I use Goggle maps to model it a close I possible with FS objects. I will probably work on a few more airports in my area. Thanks again for sharing.

    Nice tutorials! I learned the hard way, that If made scenery around an airport I use the simple scenery file as a starting point. But if I want to fix the runways taxiways etc it not a scenery edit but rather an airport one, using the simple airport file as a starting point. Seems big difference is a data folder instead of a scenery one, and of course the proper xml. The sample simple airport had a data and a materials but no model, so I coped those directories from the simple scenery and pasted the xml into the document. And created the correct folders as well, of course.
    . My home airport wasn’t awefull, way better than x-plane, but it had missing FBO, lumps in the terrain and humps in the runway, taxiway and taxi-lights (in rl, airport has no taxiway lights at all) onthe apron. Planes parked incorrectly etc. so I am rebuilding it :)

    This was a good start to get the tools figured out, but now I realized when it comes to saving polygons, you can control click to select all of any polygons including terraforming in the drop down list and save them all at once. or maybe it's not necessary, not sure enough myself. but in any regards it seems there are many ways to do all this. I simply created a folder called "PackageSources>Data" and saved all my scenery (polys, airport), in that folder with unique names. Seems like the SDK won't let you mistakenly goof up insisting on a unique name under the shapes "save as" prompt. so far so good, made 2 small private strips so far, a lot to learn. Bush trip next, using those airports.

    Just wanted to say thank you for making these videos. I just finished editing one of my favourite grass strips, CML2 Raven Field. The process for exporting has become fully internal since this video, so that was wickedly easy. The only thing I wish to do now is modify the slope of the hill that is the field, as it is about 1-2* in the sim when it’s probably 5-7* downhill in real life. Any idea how to do that? Cheers.

    Thanks for these tutorials. Really useful as I have a few ideas on replacing some scenery (although I'm not sure I have the modelling skills to be able to do so, but we'll see...)
    When the polygon tool disables autogen scenery, does it/can it also disable the drawing of trees?

      Yes but you need another step. Open polygon properties, select vegetation, and move the slider scale to zero.

    Hi! Thank you very much for the excellent tutorials! A query: I made a polygon and modified the existing vegetation type, but it is not loaded in the airport scene I am working on. Everything else is loaded, such as buildings, vehicles, objects, and trees.
    I also made a modification in the height of the terrain of two areas and you don't see that change either. Thanks for the help you can give me.

    excellent video works fine for me thank you. I have a question: when you want to find an object they are countless and to find the right one is a kind of guessing. In one of the videos on this topic I learned that it is possible to show the texture file of objects in WINdows 10 by pressing a certain key combination. However, I no longer remember who owned this tutorial. I wonder if you know this?

      You'd just need to draw a polygon around it and click "Exclude All" that would remove it.

    So is this scenery will apply to your computer only? Or it will be globally to any MFS2020 users. Meaning if I open the flight sim and fly to that location, the question is: I’m going to find that scenery that you had created or not? Note: I’m using Xbox, and I wonder if this will work on your computer only or if it’s globally. Kindly feedback.

    i spent like 4 hours building stuff, built package, now when i try re edit the project nothing loads in after i tell it to load into editor? did i just lose all the work i just did?

    Excellent tutorial!! I can't wait to watch the rest. One question. I followed your steps exactly, but the only difference is that instead of polygon excluding ONE building, I did two. The first building I used to replace the structure shows up just fine on the excluded area. But the second building I added, looks fine over the excluded polygon while I am in the project. I then build the project, put it in my community folder, back out to the main menu, and then reload into the area. What I see is the first building looks perfect. But the second building is there, but it is INSIDE the building structure/area I had attempted to exclude with the second polygon. So I guess my question is, do I have to build the project after each polygon, before I add more? Or is there some other workflow required to clear out multiple structures, and add multiple buildings in their place, in one project. Thanks in advance for any insight!! Keep up the great tutorials!!

      UPDATE: Disregard what I put above. I actually found my 2 buildings as expected after I had shut down MSFS and loaded in a flight involving the scenery I updated. There were my two buildings!! So what I suspect happened: I was seeing the 2nd building hidden by the original polygon because I hadn't fully restarted the sim after I had moved it into my community folder. I think any time you make updates to the contents of the community folder, you must fully exit the sim, and restart it. Otherwise you can end up with some unexpected artifacts like the one I described above.
      I hope my experience will help anyone else who might encounter a similar issue.

    Well would you believe it, the example you have used is an airfield very close to me and I actually remodelled it for FSX using 3dsMax. I'm now in the process of doing it again but rebuilding everything in Blender and trying to get my head around applying textures, PBR etc. I've done the Poly Hangers that you have added here and I'm just in the process of building Hangers and other buildings. I will be going through your excellent tutorial when it comes to placing everything

      There is an official plugin in MFS SDK for 3Ds Max, but I am struggling with the exporter. It seems it will not generate .XML file and even after rebuilding, the model isn´t present in-game. In Blender, I was able to export building, but without textures so far. I would expect .XML files with all texture paths, etc., but I am getting only GUID.

    Thanks for all your work on these tutorials. Hopefully we'll see a lot of custom content covering peoples' favourite airfields!
    One thing that is giving me grief currently is runway/apron textures being cut off for no apparent reason. I wonder if you've run into this issue yet? It's like there's an invisible line across that terrain tile where no textures can be drawn. Only happens in a small number of cases, most areas are fine. I think this was an issue in Xplane and FSX too but I can't remember what caused it or what the fix was :/

      @@abandonedcranium6592 I thought it might have been that but no changes I made fixed it, so I think it might have just been a visual glitch that wasn't going away in that session, or maybe until they updated the game. Later I reloaded the same project and the entire runway displayed okay (and after exporting).
      Sometimes, the apron and runway textures seem to not appear until you zoom out and back in again a few times, but are okay in-game. Other people have said that if you switch out of dev camera and back into it, the textures will fix themselves.

    Question....have you figured out a way to place a polygon over an area with a surface property of say, Grass02, and have that polygon completely cover up the underlying Bing maps imagery? I'm working on placing an old demolished airfield back into the world where there is now an office park. Thanks, and thank you for the awesome tutorial series!

      Yes, if you untick the snap to ground option, then they can be moved up and down

    I'm assuming airport parts like the "radar" aren't under scenery but another area? I was able to remove buildings as you shown, however the radar was in the wrong spot and tried to remove it and it wouldn't disappear.

    Also, if anyone places polygons and it doesn't exclude the default scenery after going back to the main menu, restart the game, took me way too long to figure it out lol.

    Repairing did not solved the problems. I have to update my window to release 2004 and uninstalled and reinstalled the game. Now is working without crashing. Thank you for help.

    I have a fuel truck and gas pump that are part of the stock MSFS KOLD airport that I am trying to remove. I have tried several methods using a polygon but I can't figure out how to remove them. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. I also tried an exclusion rectangle.

    Hello I liked your video is informative but to help better understand you need to be more clear on what folder you go to or whether you working with your local folder or within the scnerey, Is a bit confusing when you dont clear where you are at. also I think you leaving certain explanation behind when you edited the video.

    Have tried several times over many hours trying to save this project to my Community folder. It does, but when I go to a nearby airport then move my aircraft to the location where I've added scenery, it does not appear in game. The file I create has the added scenery, but that scenery dose not appear in-game. In fact that file that I copy to my Community folder has no scenery models listing. But the file I create had all the scenery items listed ok immediately before saving it.
    Help please!. What am I doing wrong??. All the associated Community files are small.

    in the output directory part, mine auto says "scenery\mycompany\" if i change it to the one you have it just changes back. and my model doesnt appear in the objects window. can this be the issue? i know the directory you showed is default but it is not for me. Please help, thank you

    Is it possible to delete the existing autogen trees? Also I try to create a new airport but it keeps asking me for an ICAO code and of course there is none for a small private airport? It won’t seem to let me add a runway unless it is associated with an airport and I can’t add the airport without the ICAO code. Thanks.

      Yes, just draw a polygon around the trees, tick Vegetation, then set the vegetation sliders to 0 and the autogen trees will disappear

    3 days, multiple attempts. no go. can save out package as dictated. msfs refuses to see folder created in community folder.

    You make great tutorials. But when i try to open my TutorialScenery.xml it doesn't want to open. I double click it to open it. But the myscene and all doesn't show up in the project editor for some reason. It's just blank. Anyway to help maybe?

      Same for me, I did some airport enhancement and saved the scenery. Now I have to finish it, but I can't find a way to load it up.

      @@paolovittorini2145 if you haven't found the solution already: in Project Editor under your scenery name you need to highlight "myscene BGL" and then inside Inspector click 'Load in Editor' :)

    Will that Polygon Exclude work for Bridges with transiting cars? I want to replace a Bridge which is totally NOT the Design it should be, its basically just a floating road.

    For some reason I can't get the polygon tool to work. I press and hold left CTRL on my keyboard and left click once with my mouse. First point is set but it refuses to set the next.

    I'm having problems to load polygons, I saved as shown here, but after restart the Sim the polygons won't load.
    If I open the project and click at "load in editor" works again. By the way the objects that I placed works just fine.
    I don't know what I am missing here...any tip?

    Nice video and very helpful. I followed each step but there is an error in my naming that I can't figure out. I simply used KMQY the airport in which I am trying to add lighting at the GA area. So instead of turoialscenery I used KMQY. Here is where I get confused and the video resolution is not high enough (I am not being critical) for me to zoom in to our your text. For example I have renamed the .xml to KMQY.xml and I have tried leaving "-simple" in the name but when I build the package, I still see an error mentioning my name "KMQY" Once it errored because of an extra space etc. I know this is simple but I guess I am a simpleton because I am editing the names in the xml files wrong. I am almost there. I even was successful in adding lights but they would not load in the game. Anyway, thanks so much for your work on this video.

    Thanks for your excellent tutorial series. I've been trying to hide the large beacon tower which is present next to runway 18 at EGBW Wellesbourne (not a million miles from Bidford), but when I enter scenery edit mode it disappears so I can't draw a polygon around it. Any suggestions?

      Yeah I've noticed this too that airport buildings disappear in scenery edit mode. You could try guessing where it should be and add the polygon or use an exclusion rectangle

    Thanks for the tutorial, I am trying to remove a default Beacon Tower Placed near the runway in TJVQ. I tried using the polygon to exclude but it excludes all the buildings around but not the tower. Your help is appreciated

      Polygons won't exclude beacons, you need to use the exclusion rectangle

    I tried it. Polygon generation failed already. CTRL-Click holding the CTRL key worked, then no other click was accepted.

      You're supposed to be able to use an ExclusionRectangle but they don't seem to work, I think it's a bug in the SDK

      The other problem I am having is when I created the wind turbine on my model flying site I scaled it to 0.4 and couldn’t seen to save that, when I try to save scenery it doesn’t seem to do so, have you had any problems like that?

    Iv flown into some tiny airfields in the UK eg Clacton and Stapleford. They are very different to spot from the air. I'm not sure if they are this hard to spot in real life. These airfields iv mentioned had no markings on the thresholds. They just looked like any other field in the scenery. How difficult would it be to add either threshold markings or simple lighting to make these more visable

      It's easy enough to add scenery to existing airfields. You can also use the Airport tools to improve markings and define runways. i'll cover it in a future tutorial

      Certain objects don't seem to be able to be removed, such as beacon towers, etc. They're supposed to be removed by using the Exclusion Rectangle but it doesn't seem to work

    Hi Theston, super videos, I learned so much from. Thanks a lot for your excellent work.
    But I have a problem. There is an airport in my vicinity, where MSFS has put an ugly apron covering a nice bing map area (playground, parking area under trees, a.s.o). I can make disappear buildings, but not this awful apron. I tried with polygons and rectangles, no success.
    One way is probably make a completely new airport on a Google map. But I would prefer the existing airport (without apron) and insert just the buildings.
    Is there a simpler solution?

      You'd have to add a custom airport to be able to edit the airport area

      Ups, sorry, I found the solution myself. It is done with a new airport definition on the existing airport (according tutorial "placing an addon airport" in the SDK). My mistake was using just a new scenery instead of an airport.

      Thank you so much for answering. Now it is clear for me and it works fine. In fact it is a custom scenery using an airport object. Due to the ICAO label MSFS knows which airport to be modified. Your comments are found in video 015. Perfect!

    hi i loved your tutorial but today i found two overlapping bridges and they are both handcrafted by two scenery developers but i cant delete the one i don't want because it has lots of scenery in its folder it self so its overlapping with the one i want and i am not sure how to get rid of it. the one im trying to delete is the orbx bridge but i cant find it in the orbx folder itself. ive tried the polygon thing but it seems to only work with autogen not third party objects

      yeah you can't get rid of 3rd party scenery that's in the community directory via the polygon tool, you basically have to remove the 3rd party scenery.

      @@ToadmcNinja the folder in the community folder will have compiled assets so I don't think you can safely delete them from there anyway

      @@ShotInTheDark That's just what the sim does to remove plane outlines. Sometimes it replaces them with models, sometimes it just covers them over. You can add your own SimObjects in of planes if required. I'll do a tutorial on it in the future.

      You'd need a 3d model of the bridge and then add the model to the game

    Question, the new FS2020 has runway stripes that are just to clean and bright. Is there a way to just edit some texture to make them look more used/dirty/convincing?

      I was reading somewhere, that with runway selected, using texture editor you can layer tire marks etc onto runway.... got to look at that closer.

    After watching you tutorials, I managed to flatten the FYWE airport layout, had to adjust the height because I couldn't select the default airport objetcs to move them down. I added some scenery enhancements (hangars, static aircrafts, lights, ...) I saved the scenery but didn't build the package as it is not finished. I have tried to load my project, but it looks always empty. The XML file has the the date and time of my last saving, but all the work I've done seems to be desappeared. In the Tools drop down menu the Scenery editor line is grey, I can choose only to open a project, that seems empty. What am I missing??

      check the console when building to see if there are any errors. Most common one is usually the texture did not compile (because it's not a power of 8 resolution)

    Tutorial are perfect. Have learned what is need just when filing "save scenery" the button on turns green . No save as window comes up so I can name files.no shape or XML file is created. Any answer to what I may be doing wrong ?

      Check your PackageSources/Scene directory, you probably already have files in there that it is saving to

Will figure it out eventually. have put object scenery xml file in packagesource/scene folder and moved entire scenery folder to Community folder. No scenery in sim for what ever reasons. been in the modeling business for many many years and I want to call the process uses "work arounds" I 'll get there and thanks for what you do to help !!!!!

    hi Im having trouble with scenery editor .when i have all my files loaded into scenery editor I cant seem to highlight them simultaneously. If I hold left ctrl key and left mouse button I can only click one file at a time .Doing it this way is painfully slow . I have seen you highlighting them all at once what am I doing wrong

      click the first item in the list, hold left shift down then click the last item in the list you want to group select for

      Mine was also ctd and then I realized I was running shadowplay in the back ground. It woukd take about 30 to 40 minutes. Last night it went for 3 hours w/o crashing so..... my best guess, is it’s a memory hog. I was saving the scenery file every five minutes as well.

    Great tutorial! You definitely have a new subscriber. Please help me though! My local airport is Mid-Way Regional in Midlothian, TX. I can't for the life of me get the two buildings that pop up on either side of the runway to disappear! It saves my extra hanger that is there but because the buildings are on the runway they are not leaving! LOL. I have followed your tutorial to at T and still they auto generate. Can you tell me what I am doing wrong or can you take a look at it and fix it for me? I would happily pay as it's my local airport and it's driving me nuts!

      Do you actually fly out of Bidford? If so, do you have any good photos of the airfield (all the buildings etc) I want to make a custom Bidford but I don't have any good reference footage

      you're supposed to be able to use exclusion rectangles to remove sim placed objects, but i can't get them to work, I think they may be broken

      '-add polygon around lake, click the vegetation tick box slide all sliders to the left. Save and build etc.

      No way I know of that you can directly share with Microsoft, but you can share the scenery on sites like flightsim.to so others can download it

      you dont need to save your project, you open the project then you just need to save scenery changes in the scenery editor

    Thanks for the Vids. Just subscribed to your channel and just started your tuition. I've got as far as adding a hanger in place of the default. But when I type hanger in the search it only has one in there where you had a big list of hangers. Any help would be appreciated👍

    How can we add custom models to an airport scenery without copying and renaming all those files?
    Honestly, I think this SDK is trash and makes things much more awkward/hassle than it should be.
    Been trying to add custom models to my scene now for 3 days without it appearing on the marketplace as a seperate package

    I did exclude all and in the editor the building is gone but once builded and placed in community folder and reloaded scene, the building is back and merged with my own modelled building....
