You wrote those words three- decades ago. This has always been my very favorite song. I played it and sang it often. Looking back the song was just really beautiful. The music was unlike any other. Decades later the song holds a new meaning, with a loss of innocense. It's a more haunting piece, and I sing it this way. 🎼🩷
And it was released twice as a single. The first time in 1988 as the second single from Wide Awake in Dreamland, then again in North America with the compilation album Best shots. It really is a beautiful song.
It doesn't fit the "rocker chick" image she had in the 70s and 80s. She was probably 35 or so when this came out, and had kids in school. "Rocker chick" was losing credibility I imagine. In fact, her next album, which bombed, was jump blues. Too bad, her voice was angelic at times in this one.
In 1998, I was working in Milwaukee, and I knew she was going to be playing in La Crosse, some 300+ miles away! All day I was contemplating driving to see her, and finally, I told my boss I had to go. So off I went to La Crosse, speeding like a mad man, not knowing if I could even get a ticket. Luckily, I was able to get a good ticket, and watched the end of Loverboy's set. Midway through Pat's set, she sang this song, and at the end where she "OH's", her voice hit such high notes that my hair stood on end. That had never happened to before, or since. It was worth every mile, including the drive back. About 700 miles total. Hey, if you need your Pat fix- just saying!
Totally agree with you, I wish I could have gone in a concert back in the day. She came to Calgary Alberta and never saw her live and man... what a show!! The only thing I didn't like big time was that she missed this song in her set but all songs were 101% incredible SHE IS AMAZING her voice is worth of big praise and accolades beyond crap of these times! Lucky you!!!
That man can be Jesus Christ, Martin Luther King, Ghandi, Mother Theresa or a million more without a known name, the ones that make this world a little worth living. One of the best of Pat Benatar.
Exceptional song! It Don't understand how this song didn't get the "Attention and Vast Listening it calls for." Big fan for many years. Her songs sound better each time I listen! Incredible . . . Incredible . . . What more can I say!
The song is Rastafarian. The person mentioned is likely Haile Selassie, whom the Rastafarians variously believe is either the return of Jesus to earth or the incarnation of their god, Jah.
This is an incredible song that should only be played as loud as can be tolerated on a surround sound system. Amazing that it never charted here in the US, but did manage to climb to #59 in the UK.
US radio stations? No worries, the women in my family gave me this superb exposure, regardless. I thank them, am so affected and better for it. Taught me much.

Great music was on its way out and crap was beginning to creep in as the decade of the 80s died out. This is why this great song and album did not make much noise.
This song and Hell is For Children are my two all-time favorite songs. I like the comment that said she still has the golden pipes. It's true she still does. Greatest singer ever. oxoxox
Love the song! Will forever live in my memory… I was at a restaurant/bar and I played this song on the juke box. Was talking to a friend I just met that night and she leaned in and kissed me. Never saw her again but still think of her when I listen to this song.
This song , it touches my soul, thought I could never shed tears from any song, this one brings out that in me, im for ever indebted to Benatar, and of course her husband and crew, thank you Pat,
I agree... I've always thought this was her finest work. The entire album was fantastic, but this song is an all time classic. Amazing, along with Anne Wilson she 's still got just about the best set of pipes in pop/rock music.
Mrs. Benatar has been my favorite female vocalist for well over 20 years. I remember trying to belt out tunes like she did. I have never seen her in concert and want to kick myself in the butt for never doing so. She is an amazing performer. Hopefully I will get to see her some day.

Memories from my childhood...It was out long before I was born which was in 1999... I one day found this best shots album my mom had..I played it and played the hell out of it 😆. So whenever I hear this song and shadows of the night it instantly brings back the memories of being a child and living the best life ❤️ Those were the days

Pat Benetar's music moves me in a way that no other female vocalist's ever has. She is magnificent and has led an exemplary life. She lives the way she sings, with class and elegance and humility. She is about the most admirable female rock vocalist to have ever graced a stage or a studio.

I cant thank my Mum enough for bringing me up with fantastic music!! we adore Pat Benatar! our song is Love is a Battlefield!! Thank you Mummy!! you have made my life so much better!! I miss this originality of music, no half nakedness just pure talent!!
Music and a song can be so many different things to so many different people, but I must say (as I've said before elsewhere) that I was listening to the whole album and while I know this song was written about Bob Marley (One Love), and I wasn't looking for a spiritual reaction, I felt the words to this song the same way others have. It resonated in me that she was singing about the one ultimate heavenly love. A gift any way you take it, thanks to you both Pat and Neil.
This song became ever so much more powerful for me as a Soldier staioned in the Sinai Peninsula over in Egypt. We were exercising the 1979 peace treaty in the tiny hamlet of Neueva about half way up the coast of the Gulf of Aquaba. It made me think of so much out on patrol.
***** Sorry it's taken me a bit to reply to you... I have a wacky schedule and lots of extra-curricular activities out building and upgrading firing ranges for the Army. As far as the song you mention "Too Long a Soldier", eh, I can't feel one way or the other about it really. I don't feel it relates a whole lot to how I served. Yes, I've seen man's cruelty to man. I've dealt some of it out to some people who (I feel) desperately needed it. I feel no remorse for any of the sharper things I've done in the service of my country (and the people of this world, for that matter). I've done what I have done in the defense of innocent people no matter where my travels (or my government) have taken me. I feel that I have fulfilled the oath of protection that I swore to faithfully, and honourably. I have defended the defenseless and rendered what aid I had to give to those who needed it whether they asked for it or not. Most times, the aid I rendered need not have been asked for: as I had seen it was simply needed! I have been called vile and nasty things as a result. I have been threatened with physical harm and worse, also. As a younger man, those things used to get under my skin quite easily. Now-a-days... not so much. I have come to realize that most of the people issuing those insults and threats will never know the deprivations that I have endured to render my service. Therefore, most of what they have to say ring very hollow. The only one's that I feel that can judge me with anything near honesty are my fellow bretheren in the Infantry. Other than that... I'll wait for my real Commander-In-Chief at the big CP in the great beyond! I don't mean to sound like I'm coming off as defensive or anything... I really didn't take offense to your question. I'm just trying to say what my state of mind is on the subject. I'll look up Leo and see what the story is. I really get positive inspiration from Hoo-ah stories of men who gave it their all, not expecting to make it through alive, only to find themselves coming out the other side still in one piece. Those men have my utmost respect! And to the people they served, protected, and made a world of difference to: I say bless you! Thank God they were there for you! Cheers, from Hacksaw!
***** I looked up Leo Major... holy moly, that man was certifiable! He recieved two Distinguished Conduct Medals (DCMs) for bravery. One in WWII, and one in Korea. He was actually put in for a DCM for single-handedly capturing 93 German Soldiers in the battle for Scheldt in southern Netherlands before his actions in Zwolle. He didn't want to recieve the medal from Bernard Montgomerey, so he refused it! That would have made three DCMs! That is the Canadian version of the Congressional Medal of Honor! Leo was one died-in-the-wool bad ass! I'm sure Leo would have just replied that he was just doing his job as a Soldier... most men of his stature in combat would say such. But to be associated with Leo Major would be a distinct honor, and an endless source of satisfaction. I'm sure that for Leo, the knowledge of having made such a difference for you and yours would have endlessly warmed his heart and boueyed him with pride and thankfulness for being of service to you. I'm glad that you and yours had Leo for a guardian angel when you needed him most.
This isn't just a song. It's a prayer and one sorely needed right now for the whole of humanity.

The most underrated Pat Benatar song ever. This should've been a lot more popular and it shocks me that it wasn't.

The ending is the most amazing part of this great song. "We are the children of The Thousand Days ..."
How did this not get more airplay? So glad I happened upon it. She’s so freaking amazing.
