Been a loyal GoPro fan for many years because I support American made. Even after they’ve fallen behind I still stuck with them hoping the next generation will reward my loyalty. The 13th gen was the last straw. They finally gave us a magnetic mount but didn’t actually give it to us in the box. They came up with some new accessories, but too expensive, and most of all: they never did fix the over heating problem. All the problems they had was solved not by GoPro themselves, but by DJI. None of the GoPro products were American made. ALL of them were made by the Chinese companies in China, Thailand and Mexico. How do you think they made such a huge profit in the first place?
I haven't had any significant issues with any of my go pros whether the original, the 9 or my current 11, I'm always really impressed with the footage. I loved my Sony FDR x-3000 I think it was called it was better than the first go pro by far. But the form factor and usability with mounts was the reason go pro become the leader in action cameras. Sounds like it's not a technology standpoint affecting the business, it again comes down to greedy management that are not suitable leaders.

DJI action 5 looks great but I'll wait until the action 6 next year. Since I have a DJI drone I fu\igure I'll stick with DJI across the board.
The thing I cant stand about GoPro is the overheating/automatic shut down issues that have plagued every generation of gopro's and has never been fixed.
my gopro 12 is full of bugs (no voice recording, quick capture doesn't capture skund), extremely slow charging and a broken on/off button, that same button is on the new gopro 13. So much bugs we were annoyed daily during our 6 mths if travelling. at absolute nightmare of a camera to use. I remember buying their earlier cameras which were difficult to use but got better and had great picture quality in daylight. I was excited for the Fusion and started working with it because the footage could also integrate with the editor I use. However, after being unable to retrieve some footage from one of the cards, I started looking for support. There was a bug that couldn't be resolved because they stopped making updates and dropped support for the camera. It wasn't that I left GoPro. They left me.
I bought a Flip handheld video camera a few months after I bought my first iPhone 3g. When the 3gs came out with video recording, I was able to sell my 3g and my flip and by the 3gs. Admittedly gopros are more rugged, but they needed to excel where smartphone cameras didn't since gopros are super unreliable. Insta360 is killing it now, and dji
Man, i still remember 2014 with the karma and the hero 5 release. I loved this stuff. I was still very young and really wanted the camera and the drone. I just didn't have the money. But surprisingly i have missed nothing
DJI was more reliable. Go Pro never give attention to their processor And try to milk out max out of their processor. This lead to freezing and glitches. The picture quality in GoPro is better than DJI except low light performance. No its fight between insta 360 and DJI
I tried GoPro back in the days of the GoPro 3. I bought a Black and got a White edition free from a technology summit. The White killed SD cards while in a waterproof case. The Black never had an issue, but I learned my lesson not to buy anymore of their crappy, prone to kill SD cards, and somewhat decent image quality after this experience. As a result, I will NEVER buy a GoPro every again.
Action cameras are still very much a niche product. It’s just not that big a market. Consumers will buy what they need once every 5 years. Professionals still use GoPro extensively because they own all the mounts and accessories in the ecosystem. However, professional video is a small market. GoPro quality is still just OK unless you’re shooting outdoors. Even then, it does not match proper pro gear.
I gave GoPro a shot 2x. First was the GoPro3 or 4. Constant issues with sound. Then a few years later I got a GoPro Hero 10 Black. Overheating on a cool day outside of direct sunlight, overheating at home, batteries lasting 30-45 minutes, batteries swelling up inside the camera (original batteries mind you), stupid design of the sound mod, will not work with many aftermarket sound tools, awkward to use and secure, sometimes the cover will not release, randomly it will just kill sound during a recording or freeze for no reason. Absolute overpriced junk. Will never buy again.
Very good vid! You should add in how GoPro "stole" tech from Contour that put them out of business. I know a few execs as i was sponsored by them. So i had no choice and got a GoPro6. What a failure that was. Then i splurged and got a new 8 when it came out. What? No detachable lens?! Sorry but they really shot themselfs in the foot. And it was managed by an exec who stole from within. Good job sharing that by the way. If GoPro gave sample units to those in the field like myself i could've pointed out every flaws in a few weeks. From cliffs to lava flows & huge waves & coral reefs i transverse some extreme areas at times. A good test for lighting, reflection & refraction, shock absorption to salt spray clogging the entries (my #1 worry). My Contour3 Black is still going by the way. It was built well. From water reflection to overcast refraction in light to dark backgrounds it's many ways better than a GoPro, but not in everything though. Good Vid:)
I’m sorry, but I don’t even have to think. The CEO made a massive insider sale, decreasing confidence. That, tied in with the fact a product is not a company, summarizes the downfall
In my country(India), temperature crossing 40 degree is not uncommon, and Gopro's maximum operating temperature was 35 degree.. for my country gopro is a joke, so i went for Dji action 4 instead, and am pretty happy with the purchase.
Going public is a death knell for all but the people at the top. You had an innovative product? Hope you like stagnation, cuz you’re never inventing anything ever again. Too risky!
It's one of those cases, where they should have sold out or diversified via partners ASAP, once they were a household name. Alternatively, they should have stayed a niche company with low costs - but they did neither of those things and thus failed.
i don't understand why their runnings costs are so crazy. All they need to do is keep making market leading cameras which they still are albeit with more competition.
I worked in image quality at GoPro from 2013-2016. Serval internal decisions about camera pricing really helped the downfall. Cough * GoPro Session at launch *cough.
I think stock price and product retail price crossed over 10Y ago. Once they got competition they crumbled. they simply bet on the wrong horse. Their product prices are so insane, that competition was better, whatever product you needed, and need today. I buy only used gopros, when I can. I know what I get, all the issues, all the pro's and con's. It's for the first time cost effective, and they can be used as intendent. not like an overpriced new from retail.
O wow, so basically goPro created DJI .... they pushed them over the edge and today we have some pretty damn nice drone tech and great cameras that don't crap themselves and overheat.

Why is Sony no longer releasing new action camera models? I think the FDR-X3000 is the best action camera Sony has ever released. 😓
GoPro was a one-trick pony that thought it was way too cool to innovate, try new things and tried to push its revenue driver to subscription services. It was Peloton before Peloton was Peloton. DJI expanded with innovative products and took GoPro’s market while many people kept using their phones for video purposes. If anyone is old enough to remember, flip cameras failed the same way
gopro won't go bankrupt! several sensible companies have shares in it! Besides, the company should not exist since 2018! and as you can see, it still works! However, the company has some flaws, but even though they haven't been addressed, the products are still selling! it is also not as innovative an entity as the competition! and this is the biggest surprise for me! The company is a bit stagnant! I have a few ideas myself on how to hook up a GoPro ~ there are actually ways to do it! Besides, I have read several times that the company is for sale! it has a huge brand, but this segment (action camera market) is probably past its best!

It's sad but inevitable at their current pace. I still love my Hero 2. Hero 10 not so much. It overheats too much and is unreliable. I wouldn't trust it for anything important.
😔
I used to like GoPro, still have Hero 8 and love it. But my next action camera will be something else. The more I read about newer GoPros, the more I see they have more and more issues.
It’s so sad to see this. I am a GoPro user since their beginning and so disappointed to see their lack of innovation. I am considering quitting.
Not enough R&D, got complacent.
An action camera company has the world's most expensive CEO. It doesn't make sense.
Just got the Osmo Action 5 and absolutely loving it. GoPro you let us down by being too greedy.
So in the end you are not pro American anymore...welcome to reality. Don't worry Trump will take up your cause and make DJI more expensive for all American so we will go back to GoPro. I am pro American products so I will eat shit if I have to.
None of the GoPro products were American made. ALL of them were made by the Chinese companies in China, Thailand and Mexico. How do you think they made such a huge profit in the first place?
Gopros are amazing as long as you buy the older models used lol
I can hear the sadness in you voice Hari for GoPro 😢 this was a moving piece. My thoughts are with the Ceo who paid himself $287m.
I haven't had any significant issues with any of my go pros whether the original, the 9 or my current 11, I'm always really impressed with the footage. I've always wanted to learn more about tuning up the video in post but haven't tried to. I've taken the go pro in the ocean, in the mountains, into deserts on my backpacking trips.

That CEO really set the company up for faliure
CEO in most companies are selfish and conmen 😢😢😢
And they have a good network, that helps them land another job after they sucked all the blood out of a company.
GoPro thought just the brand image would compensate for every serious shortcomings they had.
I don't understand people who use their phone in place of a GoPro. If you are water skiing would you rather drop a GoPro or your phone to the bottom of the ocean? And I'm not concerned with the dollar value of the phone but rather all of the personal info that is on it. Doing some action sport where you could drop your device and someone else finds it - losing a GoPro is preferable to losing your phone.
How many people are using GoPros to film their water skiing, come on dude I know common sense is lost but jeeeezus.
@@theopticsarehigh the water skiing was just used as an example. OP said "doing some action sport where you could drop your device and someone else finds it" means they are worried about someone finding the phone. That's way more likely on land. It's ironic that you missed some thing that incredibly obvious, yet derided the comment as if it was the epitome of stupidity.
After COVID, consumers are going with cheaper alternatives rather than premium subscription services. The stock trend explains it all. Consumer spending is declining and is focused on lower-priced products.
Lol. The fact the drone was called karma 😭😭😭😭😭😭
Bankruptcy? How? They kind of had compact adventure camera monopoly from my outside view?
A lot of the hate is complete nonsense. You see video after video talking about how GoPro is Yesterdays news, yet if you ask anybody on the street name and action camera, you're almost guaranteed to get the answer GoPro. Maybe they make stupid financial decisions but they are still the industry standard for an action camera, end of story.
@@jasondashneycomplete nonsense is crazy considering you literally see them report how they’re nearly hemmoraging money. Doesnt matter what you hear on the street Lol at one point blockbuster was the place to go for movies even in the wake of netflix
@@junyaiwase "you literally see them report how they’re nearly hemorrhaging money."
Great, but they're still alive and sell tons of cameras and are still the #1 brand in the space. Unless they go bankrupt or become like Skil Saw (who had a product so popular it became the word used to describe every circular saw, but then they faded into irrelevancy even though circular saws are still commonly called Skil Saws) they are still the go-to action camera.
I was a fan of GoPro. But they started to get gready and constantly released half-ass products.
I wonder how much the CEO is pulling in every year now?
Dude could literally save the company with a donation.
Why does it seem like any of us could run GoPro better? I’m shit with money, but damn! Raising 400+M dollars, then RIGHT away, taking over half as a salary?!? wtf. lol
As a public company, doesn’t that have to get approved by a board? if so, why would they approve that?
As a long time user of gopro at our company we found issue mainly with overheating , which many users complained about , 2nd request was bigger sensor and able to lens options . which they was never listen to . They went on using similar tech , lack innovation , did not look after there customer base, they only thought about money ! there CEO got a big head and greedy. Dji and Insta make what the customer base want , providing a far better product . plus the chinese making a product with similar results for cheaper .
They should have invested in the drone market, rebranded as "DronePro" and stayed relevant in the Tech time 🤦♂️
They already failed with GoPro Karma (drone)..
GoPro totally wrecked our Boracay trip! It suddenly shut down, probably from overheating, and when we turned it back on, all our video files were gone. It’s so frustrating to lose all those memories because of a technical glitch
I had the GoPro 5, 7 and currently still have the 8 and 10 but that's where it stops for me. The 10 is great and zero issues but I have no interest in future GoPro products.
Needs to ise double the storage to transfer videos to the phone, first time to store in the gopro app and another time to store in the phone's memory. We are definately going over to try DJI.
Over the years, I probably heard my friends complain more about overheating their GoPros than actually enjoying it .
DJI was more reliable. Go Pro never give attention to their processor And try to milk out max out of their processor. This lead to freezing and glitches. The picture quality in GoPro is better than DJI except low light performance. No its fight between insta 360 and DJI
7:42 now I NEED to know how that jump ends 🙈
Hahaha
CEO was too busy with other ventures like shark tank 😂
I tried GoPro back in the days of the GoPro 3. I bought a Black and got a White edition free from a technology summit. The White killed SD cards while in a waterproof case. The Black never had an issue, but I learned my lesson not to buy anymore of their crappy, prone to kill SD cards, and somewhat decent image quality after this experience. As a result, I will NEVER buy a GoPro every again.
3:14 gopros dying in the middle of use? That's their signature move! We all bought gopris for this roulette excitement!
Too risky!
AI sponsorship bleh.
It's one of those cases, where they should have sold out or diversified via partners ASAP, once they were a household name. Alternatively, they should have stayed a niche company with low costs - but they did neither of those things and thus failed.
What happens when you put a child in charge of everything.
i don't understand why their runnings costs are so crazy. All they need to do is keep making market leading cameras which they still are albeit with more competition.
I worked in image quality at GoPro from 2013-2016. Serval internal decisions about camera pricing really helped the downfall. Cough * GoPro Session at launch *cough.
thumb rule : never invest on greedy ceo
Ah yes, the sponsor that will wipe out all TH-camrs and content creators

Not all heroes wear capes!
3:00 Sure! Call your product "Karma"... What could go wrong, right?
Hahaha
🙏 Dear Hari, I am a big fan of your channel, and I am from Malaysia. Could you make a video about Sony action cameras such as the Sony FDR X3000, FDR-X3000, HDR-AS300, HDR-AS50, and Sony RX0?
What's up with CEOs lately?
I swear every time i hear some CEO ruins a very successful thing ever made
All the kids on the slopes used to have gopros on their helmets but after Schumacher had his accident they more or less disappeared, at least where I ski.
GoPro zero innovation
The first DJI actions cameras didn't match in quality but they've caught up.
Bought their hero 4 yesterday and youtube algorithm recommending me this today.....
They should have made small goPro for pets
As an amateur mountain bike rider. I wanted a gopro until I saw the prices
I've had gopro Hero 3, 4 and 7, a couple of sessions too. 8 cameras total. They've had enough of my money since they're always so unreliable.
They are SOOO expensive
what do you think of the
GoPro HERO13 (Hero 13) Black - with 50 Piece Accessory Kit and 2 Extra Batteries + 64GB Card - Waterproof Action Camera - 5.3K HDR, 27MP Photos, 1/1.9" Sensor, Live Streaming, Webcam, Stabilization
They've spent all their money on advertising rather than r&d, They cheaped out on the hardware, all they needed to do was focus on software more efficient better CPUs and camera sensors . But they wasted their money.
Simple...CHINESE KNOCKOFFS from Temu and Ali Express!
Gopro didn't catch up with competition.. DJI & smartphones software+ hardware development grew quickly
Happens that I own a pair of 7 Blacks. They filming nice but are the most glitchy cameras I've ever used. It's frustrating when the camera freezes during recording and all I got is a video with 1 freezed frame and the sound going on.
Or how they suddenly turn them on and drain the battery to zeor overnight...
I need to get something better, yea
Anyone else think he sounds a lot like the ColdFusion TH-camr? The voice and vibe are really similar!
Without drone, they are nothing. They should never stoped drone production. They can build cameras for FVP drones like DJI does.
Great video as always
Thank you as always Balpreet!
not sure advertising HOW AI is replacing jobs is the best optics but ok 😂 for real though, the amount of people I know who buy GOPro solely based on the name is frustrating as hell! There are better products out there, for cheaper and as a bonus they don't randomly overheat on a slightly warm day after 20 minutes
So you're making fun of people for buying the well-known products, yet you don't offer an alternative.
@@jasondashney
A) Being frustrated at something is not "making fun" of anything.
B) If you watch this video he names at least 2 brands who are solid alternatives (DJI, Insta360). Do your own research, I aren't your mother.
C) A 2 line youtube comment is not intended as a thesis or buying guide regarding which action cameras are the best.
D) Who the hell takes buying advice from youtube comments anyway?

Having used GoPro cameras, I'm not surprised. Every new generation is worse than the previous. Poor quality, bad app and continuously overheats.
DJI stole GoPro's lunch because GoPro thought they were too big to fail much like Blackberry and Nokia.
They chased a profit instead of a product they could stand behind. Very expensive too but considering where the profit went, im not even surprised at this result.
Smart phones have ultra wide angle cameras that certainly took away a lot of sales
What has happened to Directors' remunerations whilst profits are tanking?
I've found my older GoPro 4 more reliable and than my GoPro 7. Probably last one I will ever purchase
Their product is so expensive they should make it cheaper
only using go pro for the gyro data and "go pro" look. everything else, nah
