Why 3D Platformers Need to Come Back NOW

- From Mario 64 to Sonic Frontiers, 3D platformers have been a part of gaming since 3D consoles came out. But when the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 came out, the genre seemed to die out, with only a few releases coming here and there since. In this video, I look back at some of the classic 3D platformers on the N64, PlayStation 1, and PlayStation 2. I also look at modern platformers. Throughout the video, you’ll see why I think 3D platformers deserve a comeback.
Note: Sorry for the choppy gameplay footage. My PC isn’t very good at recording footage. I'm hoping to get a new PC once this channel picks up.

Great vid. I heard Spyro 4 is happening and im excited.
I mean, you can't really say that 3d platforming is dead due to the fact that there are 3d platformers still being released today. To name a few:
Ratchet & Clank (2016)
Super Mario Odyssey (2017)
Sonic Forces (2017)
Spyro Reignited Trilogy (2018)
New Super Lucky's Tale (2019)
Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time (2020)
Psychonauts 2 (2021)
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart (2021)
Sonic Frontiers (2022)
Kirby and the Forgotten Land (2022)
They are getting fewer though.

@@luisoncppTo add to the list Hell Pie is a fantastic one as is Lunistice and while personally I didn't enjoy it as much as those 2 Frogun has a very positive rating on steam. And forgot to mention Yooka-Laylee also a good 3d platformer.
Yeah it’s not dead, it’s just not as big as it used to be. We also don’t see many new ips as we used to, just continuations or remakes of old ones.

Mario 64’s greatness needs to be evaluated with historical context in mind. Jak 1 and therefore jak 2 don’t exist without the groundwork laid by Mario 64. In a vacuum of course Mario 64 isn’t going to be as refined as later games, but I don’t think that detracts from its overall status as one of the best games ever made. People playing it today for the first time will be disappointed if they’re expecting it to be the “best game ever” without accounting for context

The MegaMan legends/64 diss is crazy
Most people show a blind eye to 3D platformers because of "Muh camera" It's as if they are physically unable to move the right stick. Maybe new 3D platformers can fix this? Whow knows. But also most 3D platformers now aren't very fun or satisfying and rely on collecting random things for no reason.

What's something that you would like to see in a new 3d platformer? Whether it be a mechanic, a theme, ect.
I am among those who really enjoyed "Clive 'N' Wrench"! I prefer high quality graphics (4K if possible), over these PS1 and N64 style games. I tried to enjoy "Cavern of Dreams" but it got too hard for me in the later levels. I also really enjoyed "New Super Lucky's Tale" and "Koa and the Five Pirates of Mara"! More 3D platformers please!

Crash bandicoot wraped is the best old crash bandi game.
And it’s just a art preference between old crash and the insane trilogy... I played both... alot.

It's kind of jarring when your gameplay footage freezes every few seconds.
I know, it was really upsetting when I realized the footage turned out that way. I'm working on getting a better PC that can hopefully handle recording N64 games.
Calling MegaMan 64/Legends a failure is such a bad take.
there are gems out there, most of the comment section and your video are only naming the triple A games by big companies, id even go as far to called "Blinx the timesweeper" a triple A game well known game from the 00s. There out there, you just gotta look :)
