    This is so interesting, cool video a mate!
    Got my dad an ancestry kit for his birthday and was only expecting English and a little bit of Irish. Came back 42% English (but like yours it also highlighted a little of France, The Netherlands, Switzerland and Germany), 36% Scottish (a huge number considering I didn't know we had any Scottish ancestry at all), 15% Irish, 5% Norwegian (I'm guessing maybe some Viking DNA??) and 2% Welsh!
    Saw some people recommending uploading DNA to myheritage, would you say it's worth a look?

      The Norwegian vikings settled in Ireland. In fact the Irish probably have more viking DNA than people think, it's just mixed and hard to distinguish because of this and vikings taking people back to Norway

    Its shocking how much Irish is apart of so many ppl. Im Canadian Scottish. Or so i thought . I too found out the Irish ancestors are all over my history. . The real shock came when a buddy of mine took the test he is Polish . u guessed it.....23% Irish.. as he put it ....it puts a whole new meaning on Saint Patrick's Day for him

      I know! it's actually pretty interesting. The Irish have definitely influenced a lot of places around the world! But who wouldn't want to celebrate St Patrick's day!!

    • @thatonecharlie
      @thatonecharlie  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know the English came in the 4th century from the continent. But that was so long ago that the traces would be minimal unless there was a recent ancestor. As you’ve suggested. But I feel that it’s just a broad ancestry category, to define any possible traces from that region.

    I did both Ancestry and MyHeritage DNA and on MyHeritage, I'm 15.4% Irish, Scottish & Welsh, but on Ancestry I'm 4% England, 3% Irish, 3% Norwegian, 1% Scottish & 1% Greek, which I think is an error. But It's funny how Scandinavian and English shows up on my Ancestry results but not on MyHeritage. Hm.

      Lol myheritage is saying 55% Scandinavian.. Lol no.
      I've not got any Scandinavian grandparents. Even generations up.
      They also said I'm Italian 😂 😂 😂
      I'm half Irish, and the rest is Welsh and English. I'm probably Scottish too.
      But don't put to much into these tests. I've done 7 dnas now. I'm trying to find someone. And they all say somthing different. Only thing they agree on, is that I'm half Irish.

  • @kyrieeleison9344

    The Irish and the Welsh intermarried, often. Both are Celtic peoples. Often, the Irish, out of oppression and desperation foisted upon them by the British, worked in Wales and intermarried. Your Norwegian blood *may* be from your Irish blood, as the Norwegian Vikings ravaged Ireland, even founding many cities, there, including Dublin. The Norwegian Vikings also fought, traded, held land (Hebrides and Shetlands) and intermarried with Scottish Clans. The founder of the MacDonald Clan was a Norwegian viking named Somerled! Anyway, just some more insight as to where your (over 50% when you include the Welsh) Celtic connection might have come from. Slainte!

  • @MichaelKearsley

    The Vikings weren't a group as such, there were various different groups that have got labelled as Vikings.
    This includes starving Scandinavian farmers who had failed crops and did raids to survive.
    There were also warrior castes, particularily among groups that settled Iceland and places down West of Ireland, West of Scotland, parts even of western England and Western Wales, much of these groups are associated with YDNA and MtDNA groups that peaked among Iron Age Danish Warriors and were of Middle Eastern origin and were involved in colonisation of Greenland and a colony in Eastern Canada, most of those groups moved on and so the DNA is more commonly found in the places they went to and is rarely found in modern Scandinavia, so English, Welsh & Northwestern Europe or Ireland & Scotland could well be Viking ancestry.

    • @thatonecharlie
      @thatonecharlie  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ahh this is very true. I think due to their integration in early medieval society their 'geneotype' has very much been diluted through the british isles and europe. I do think the term viking is often too broad, and used to refer to too many people, but definitely an interesting group to research!

    North western Europe includes the Jutes/angles and saxons so you will have some Danish and Dutch DNA as well as Germanic and Frankish DNA. as for the Norweigon, I would put that down to East Anglia raiders or in your case, interbreeding with the Picts. (unless you have nailed a direct Norweigon ancestors of course). Moreover. congrats who wouldn't want Viking genes! Also, with your results don't forget that big brain and powerful muscle heritage from our Neanderthal Ancestors as well ;) There's a reason why all the world strongest men have had North Western-Scandinavian or Germanic-Russian DNA. Finally, Can I make a suggestion that you take advantage of your genes and join a powerlifting club or hardcore gym mate. Best wishes from an old and insufferable Anglo-Scandinavian.

    • @thatonecharlie
      @thatonecharlie  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I do find it so cool thinking about what my heritage could have been! Especially thinking about raiders and how they could have affected my dna! An interesting thought, thank you ☺️ I also didn’t know about any muscle heritage! Which is very interesting, maybe I will try and join a powerlifting club!!

      @Ka-gz3ry 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jaybinks5989 yes I find that it very's and sometimes quite alot with different company's as they use different algorithms.
      It's interesting to see though .
      Also there is gedmatch and I think a few more that are free to use .
      Plus you get new family matches too which is good because you may have family that have tested using a company you didn't .

I think, for you and me, and a whole bunch of Brittish and Scandinavian people the answer lay in our common history, anglo-saxons, vikings etc.
