308 vs Steel: Bullets Make A BIG Difference

  • In today's video, we will be testing 20 different bullets loaded in the 308 Winchester to see how they compare on mild steel. Testing was done at 50 yards using A529 Grade 55 mild steel. Thanks for watching!
    Nearly all of the projectiles used were purchased as pulled bullets, some of which are only offered in factory ammunition normally.
    These tests are meant for entertainment and educational purposes only. Shooting steel can be dangerous, so do not try any of these tests at home!

    Overall a very interesting test, and I've been loving the channel
    One thing people forget is that a copper bullet bullet can go through steel better than lead, IF it's not a hollow point, because it's not only about bullet material, but also bullet design, and this might be a more interesting test to me because of that
    While, yes copper is in general, a harder metal than lead, all of those bullets where a hollow point of some sort, and from what I have seen, those copper HPs have pretty violent expansion very quickly and will not penetrate that deeply, and I think it's because they're not really a solid piece of copper, they have tiny grooves inside so that they'll expand more easily
    Another thing is that copper is indeed harder than lead, but it doesn't have that high of a tensile strength either, so it's pretty maleable, brass one the other hand can have up to double the hardness depending on the composition and I would bet that a pointy brass bullet would go through a lot more

      @johnthetoolmanchess8932 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You also understand that this is only mild steel not hardened AR500 steel which is used for Armor and a Armor piercing bullet can’t even go through 1 inch of mild steel that’s really not that good. I have thick steel here and different grades of steel here to their hardnesses are so different

    • @johnthetoolmanchess8932
      @johnthetoolmanchess8932 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well yeah, with mild steel most bullets will have trouble with 3/4 of an inch of steel over half an inch. Steel Plate can stop most things, but the armour piercing failed to penetrate 1 inch plate, but remember mild steel is not as hard as some of the other grades Like 500 grade and 600 grade rifle rounds, barely leave a mark on the plate with those grades

    • @mattfleming86
      @mattfleming86 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wholeheartedly agree. It has to be related to the failure mode.. Mild steels tend to flow in a plastic manner (relatively) whereas the hardened steels are going to be a brittle failure. Maybe the milder steels as they are "flowing" away absorb more energy? I'm not sure of the answer.. but seeing a SMK outperform a barnes blows on ANY steel blows my mind.
      Great video man. 11/10.

      I will test Barness TTSX vs 3/8" harden steel. 175gr SMK did not go through it. if TTSX won't penn then I'll repeat the test with 300WM 190gr SMK and 180gr TTSX and TSX (TSX supose to be the "hardest" copper bullet. That should show if hardened steel vs mild steel is a factor with weak copper penetration.

    If it was in a 30-06 fired by an M1 Garand it would have gone through. Also take a look at what type of 30-06 AP round you have there were 4 or 5 different kinds if I recall. AND the 167 or 172gr (can't remember the exact weight) AP type have better penetration. I'll bet they would have gone through the 1" too. You forgot to mention what powder and how much you reloaded with. I'll bet if you pushed the load to 105% it would have gone through the 1" too. If you used a 26" barrel it might have gone through also. Really nice work by the way, other than Going Ballistic your "experiment" was way up there as far as youtube content goes.

    I wonder if taking a wooden or plastic door wedge and tapping that into the plate holder would make it more stable and less likely to have the plate fall out when it gets hit?

      The last bullet, the AP round, he hand loaded himself I would assume.
      The rest are just normal civilian .308 rounds that you can buy at your local gun or sporting goods store.

    • @FraserFir-sb4lk
      @FraserFir-sb4lk 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It was pulled from an '06 so I assume it was an M2AP pill. An 80 grain .244" diameter penetrator, with a 54 degree angle tip and a hardness of around 62 Rockwell.
