    Greatest Rock Band Ever

  • @stevejohnston8254

Townshend is one of rock’s few true geniuses and Quadrophenia is his masterpiece 🎸🎸

Just before Pete goes into the second verse of "Cut My Hair", the original, non remastered version had someone who thought they were off mic saying, "You're on!". Since that followed lines about a beach fight (between Mods and Rockers), I thought they had left this direction in on purpose. After all, the words, "You're on" could be a studio direction, or it could be what a Mod or Rocker might have said if challenged to a fight. (Also, I meant to put this comment on the video that contains the song I mentioned.)

Pete Townshend Is a musical genius. The creator, writer and composer of Masterpieces like Quadrophenia, Tommy and Who's Next should be celebrated in the same breath as Beethoven and Mozart. LONG LIVE THE WHO! 🤟

At this point in the story, Jimmy is in the city to see a band that he idolized. He's kind of disgusted to find out that they've sold out and il the lyrics talk about his expectations and reality, the image created by fans and the bands own limitations as people. "You declared you would be 3 inches taller, you only became what we made you!" Is confusing because it's not really a strict dialogue, or at least isn't clear because Roger is singing both roles. But there is a back and forth going on that is basically saying "we fans made you into something much more than you really are. It's parts of Jimmy's growing disillusionment with everything.

My my my my my my my generation was actually sung into the guitar pickups.....yep!

  • @brianshockledge3241

Townshend wrote all the songs his four themes/ band members personalities were as follows.

  • @conversationalshaving9805

Double albums had Side 1 and Side 3 on one record, and Side 2 and Side 4 on the other record. That way, on turntables that had a record stacker, after Side 1 would play, the record wirh Side 2 would gently plop down atop the first record, and the listener could go directly to the next part of the album without having to turn over a record. After the second side played, Sides 3 and 4 could be stacked on the tall spindle, and those would drop down, one at a time, for those sides to play.

The high mmmmm part in the middle and the 'I''m the punk with the stutter' lyric is harkening back to an older Who song My Generation where the lyrics are a guy stuttering.

I often look at this song as a stand alone conversation between the aging rock star (the godfather, and old punk) and the up and coming, hungry musician (the new punk), and not so much about Jimmy per se, as I do not see Jimmy as a professional musician ... yet. Townshend often reflects on this relationship (e.g. Who Are You) since punk was appearing to be taking over from establishment rock at the time (1970s). Pete is great at conveying pride and guilt ... at the same time.

If you're enjoying synth work, you owe yourself an Emerson, Lake & Palmer album. Trilogy would be my pick (just make sure you listen to all of "The Endless Enigma" at once, as it's split into three tracks), or Brain Salad Surgery will get you "Karn Evil 9."

Perhaps my favourite album, which is why I'm always a bit disappointed those reacting to it don't research the story a bit more. The original album (and CD) came with a large booklet that in words and pictures gives the story from Jimmy's perspective, his life and family, etc. Then there's also the fact that the story was based in Britain nearly 60 years ago, when things were very different from how they are now. Reading the booklet would give reactors - especially younger people from a different continent - an insight into Britain at the time, as well as the whole issue of Mods and Rockers. Don't know if that booklet can be viewed online or not, but if you like the album why not get the album for this alone? After that, I'd recommend watching the film Quadrophenia. Highly recommended.

There's a great rendition of I'm One with Eddie Vedder singing at a benefit concert at Royal Albert Hall. Vedder said this album was massively inspiring to him, in fact he has said it saved his life. He really seems to feel the mood of I'm One. It just resonates in him and has been doing it since he was 13 or 14.

  • @jordanwhistler9597

I’m one is saying “I’m one of the mods” so he belongs somewhere despite his awkwardness

  • @tedsmith7814
