“get the best seats” haha. I saw them in Mountain View 20 years ago. The front row seats were filled with Silicon Valley execs in formal wear, who SAT through the first few songs. The real fans were in the cheap seats at the back. So Pete stopped the show and literally cussed out the people in the front row. He said, “Who comes to a Who concert, takes the best seats, and sits?” Well they stood up, awkwardly I might add, for the rest of the show. The people in the back went nuts. That’s where the true fans were.

I meant Entwhistle back in the mid 90s, and asked him about his hearing damage. He also blamed headphones in the studio, NOT their loud concerts. I thought he was joking, but after hearing Townsend say the same thing, I suspect that he actually wasn't. Dang.
Dave Westner with loudspeakers (normal speakers like in a concert or home stereo) loud volumes produce much more distortion, because they literally need more power/movement to produce the same sound level than the relatively tiny headphone diaphragm does less than an inch from your ear. Often, distortion is largely what makes you recognize music as loud, even if you don't recognize it as distortion. But with very high quality and robust speakers or headphones which don't need much power to produce crazy SPLs, you can destroy your hearing without even knowing how loud it is. :) -Micah

SHOW YA.
In 35 years, we’ve never heard about Show Ya.
Flawless pronunciation, reminds me of the audio tracks from my English book haha Love The Who, Love Pete
I first got to see The Who 23 years ago on Halloween, and just this year, got to take my daughter (not yet born back in ‘96) to see them too. Both nights were glorious, with several other great Who concerts in between.
He's the best. Straight answers, and quick with the jokes. Hope to see them (the who) live (at last), jz
The audience is sick of the audience.
They're Carrying weapons.
Plainly....Pete, you are my hero, and I will love forever what you gave us Wholigans.
Wow ! Townshend I have lost count of how many times I saw him in concert. Thank you Pete for helping me with my teenage angst ! You have written some of the best songs ever
My name is Tommy.. Pete spoke to me like many say the Beatles spoke to them. From tommy to Quarophinia to who are you. Incredible writing and playing.
The Who was in my youth and i still have LP's and still listern to them, what an awsome band, keep going Pete oldyes like me still love your music.
I just want to say...thank you for the incredible music, Pete! The Who are, always have been and will always be my absolute favorite band of all time. I saw you twice recently in Sunset Florida....sorry I screamed so loud right in front of you the first time...your people tried to sush me...but I was so excited and didn’t understand your hearing issue at that show
Great! Thank You very much! Many Greetings from an „old“ Austrian🇦🇹 fan of the Who from Linz at the Danube river! 🇦🇹🏔⛷🛶🍺🥨✌️😎🐺
Great Iv'e been waiting for Pete Townshend to do something like this since I saw they already had one of these videos for Paul McCartney.
Im still waiting for " Lifehouse" film. I bought the " Whos Next/ Lifehouse" 10 CD box set right away ( as it would QUADriple in 5 years and Im overjoyed with that. Thanx Pete!!!
I simply love this man. His perfect sarcastic English mood makes me chuckle.
Pete's music is fantastic. I recommend exploring it all. I saw him live at Winterland back in the 70s ... and of course I was blown away.
I saw The Who in Greensboro, NC while I was in College. I splurged my money to get a ride to see the performance, and still hold that memory in my heart. About 1981 or so; Before Keith Moon died. I even watched your band get into the car after the concert. I still listen to your music, and remember you telling people to move back from the stage because you didn't want to see blood, guts and intestines!
We need a "Ray Davies Answer His Most Googled Questions" video, please
That would be pretty nice. He speaks nice and intellectually.
YES!!!!
Agreed, my favorite songwriter. Even Pete is a fan.
Nobody cares what you say.
They've Armed themselves against you.
I enjoyed this video of Pete. He's a musical genius and interesting to listen to his stories. Long Live Rock!
The wonderful Zak a great drummer
He's great, but Clem Burke is fabulous.
One of Rock's intellectuals, always well-meaning and always interesting. And a very inventive guitarist and composer.
Thanks for keeping on , your shows really are awe inspirering , saw more than one in Toronto. Couldn't pass up this chance to say so. Hope to see you again. Looking forward to the book. All the best, and hi to Arther.
Thanks for your positivity and encouragement.

@@ALittleBitOfGay Cool, thanks. I just checked out your sound system...pretty cool! Wish I could hear it in real life. Love those kinda systems!
thank you Pete, for inspiring a generation or two all these years later. Long may you rock, you still inspire one like me born in 1963.
I didn't realize how humorous he is lol, in addition to being so incredibly talented.
I feel privileged to have seen The Who live back in 2015 cause I know I’ll probably never see them live again..amazing band!
I love Pete Townshend! He's always been my favorite
Nice to see Pete mention Detroit which back then was the centre of the universe for music :) Peace
What a funny guy, happy he's enjoying it all. Thanks Pete.
It`s refreshing to hear Pete`s still touring, Love the who, seen them many times! ...maximum respect.
My question is "why is nobody able to see the 'h' in your last name?"
A truly fascinating and much mellowed Pete Townsend.
Glad I'm Who fan, Saw Pete and Roger back in October of this year ( 2019 ) fantastic show.
1960jack I saw their farewell tour in the early 1990s.
Same here, at Vancouver!
I caught that show in Madison Square Garden (NYC).
My first who show was my first concert and I was 11; it was their Quadrophenia tour in 2012
@@MicahMicahel Awesome! been a who fan since 1970 i was 10 and the PBS station in Seattle showed the Monterey Pop festival from 1967.
When the Who started smashing up the stage I knew at age 10 that this was destined to be 'MY' band!. My mum was horrified!
Pete Townshend is brilliant. I saw them (the Who) a few weeks ago at MSG- they are still amazing!!! I love listening to his wit.
i can listen to this guy for hours. Very relaxing voice
If you like listening to Pete talking you should downloaded his Autobiography Who Am I on Audible which he narrates, it's brilliant such an amazing life from young abused child to top band of the mod movement to rock legend and one of the best song writers the modern age. The books worth a read but the narrated audible book is priceless I must have listened to it a dozen times in the last 4 years. Promise I'm not working for Audible Ive just been a massive who fan since I was a 12 year old mod in 1980 and discovered the my Generation album when Paul Weller said it was his fav album at that time in an NME interview.
You never saw them with Moon. IOW, you never saw the Who.
"Top band of the mod movement" you say. Seriously? You believe that to be the case? You very obviously were never around back then.
!! Had no clue I could hear him narrate it! Thank you! I have the book and read it with my inner Pete voice, not quite the same 😅
Awesome, will do!
Saw them a few years ago in Belfast, truly great band
Pete is definitely one of the best interviews in the music biz... I'd be honored if some P.T. fans would take a quick listen to my acoustic piano & vocal TH-cam performances of SLIT SKIRTS and A LITTLE IS ENOUGH in tribute to the master of lyricism & composition. Live acoustic with no autotune or digital enhancements. Peace and stay safe.
I imagine there’s one *particular* question he doesn’t answer in this.
I'm guessing you're referring to his search history.
I knew this comment would come up 🤣
@@NewhamMatt but...but...it was RESEARCH ONLY..nothing NEFARIOUS.
And a Police search of his computer found no other incriminating evidence but yet he was placed on an offender registry though the government admits there was no evidence against him
@@JohnnyLaw7.62 His book should be coming out any day though
I saw The Who with Zack Starkey in Florida. He was a standout. Glad you stuck with him.
Along with the Floyd’s Roger Waters, Pete is one the most intelligent and well-spoken of the Rock era. I always enjoy hearing what he has to say.
@French Jesus Hahahahaha.... And you sound like a right-wing triggered snowflake.
@@damone70 that was a long laugh
Jake 19 leftists are the snowflakes
@@vortexx3828 Nope. The facts don't lie. Everytime someone like trump doesn't get his way, he throws a tantrum like a child. Ahahahaha...
Bro Roger Waters is a super huge racist
Hats off to Pete, a very influential, under rated rock player indeedy
I thought Keith Moon damaged your hearing by putting dynamite in the drum kit on the Smothers Brothers show.
I'm sure that didn't help it any.
He's mellowed but still has his edge...and his genius.
Rock on legend!
Pete, you are the most under-rated master composer performer/musician of all time. You need to know this from a 60's-70's rockers.
No on ever under-rated Pete Townshend.
How is he possibly the most under-rated ....musician of all time???? First I've ever read someone claim that!
Actually, he's the premier rock composer of all-time. Bar none. Go through his body of work, then compare it to anyone else. There is no comparison!!!
I've listened to "White City"for years, and it continues to amaze me.
Brilliant. Thanks for the video.
Pete said feedback when Roger swung his mic and when Keith Moon detonated his explosives blasted his hearing but reckon the headphones damaged it too. I know how he feels
he's played so much loud music he can't remember which caused his hearing ills.I'm sure it was accumulative.
I ruined my hearing listening to Quadrophenia full blast with headphones. No regrets.
@@makelikeatree1696 a masterpiece in many ways. very inspired record.
great songs, but nothing really Happens in the story.@@tonym994
Pete is such a great writer. He should definitely write more books. A brilliant guitar player.
I don’t know what’s more upsetting: the thought of seeing all of my musical heroes passing away in the years to come or the prospect of watching them age into their 100s.😳
I'm SO glad he's not passed away. Saw them twice last month. GREAT shows.
Well done 👍 Pete, well done. I have always been a big fan. Thank you for the music, you can thank me later for buying the records.
I was disappointed he didn't mention his Rickenbacker guitar
Pete has always been one of my favorites.....very innovative guitar and great songwriting (Tommy/Quad).
la simplicité de ce musicien n'a d'égal que son mega talent ....long live rock!
Great series from Google, thank you! I loved Tommy and bought an old vinyl of it recently.
Pete Townshend was born very, very old. That's why he has always been so cool.
I rob, Can't handle the truth about your idol.
That was Warhol's strategy
@i. rob It's true, though. He was arrested because of it, he claimed, that he was "doing a research".
Jeremy Bradley You’ve been lying before, and now you’re not even making sense. At least try and put up a point.
A common saying I heard about Keith Moon's playing is that he played his drums "like a melody instrument."
I feel like Pete does the opposite: he plays his guitar like a percussion instrument. And it fit Keith's playing perfectly.
Pete you're my hero I've been a who fan 43 years now
Snap!
Your a genius Mr. Townsend. Thank you for your creativity and music! My favourite album by the way is Quadrophenia.
What a great guy.
