Thank you so much... I just bought a 2000 Sea Ray and was having trouble starting it up... My second time taking it out today and took me 15 minutes before I can start up... I'm new to boating...
Always great to see a fellow South Carolinian who posts good videos. I have a 1995 Bayliner Capri 1954, and I start it the same way after it sits for a while.
I started a 1997 Maxum/Mercruiser that's hardly used using your technique today and voila! Now the fellow who shares the boat won't burn out the starter motor.
Nice video. Here is the deal. Crank if for 5 sec and then pump it 3 times. No need to pump it before you get fuel in the carb. If the carb already has fuel it will start before you crank it.
I just watched the last 15-20 seconds a few times to make sure I had the muffs on correctly and water was flowing like it should. Funny the little things you get out of videos sometimes :)
I start mine a bit different. As you state, it doesn't help to pump it if the fuel bowl is empty. If you haven't started it in a month, the fuel bowl is most likely empty. Crank for 5 seconds then pump then start.
I have the same boat and your videos have been extremely helpful! I’m having issues with the gauges not reading at all. Switches and everything else work great! Would you have any ideas or recommendations to troubleshoot? Fuses are all good and engine runs great!
Most, if carbureted, and recently run, will start with one full throttle pump, and then return to about 30% throttle, then crank. If it has sat for some time, a little carb priming might help. Doing this many pumps with mine would flood it, as I've had the carburetor modified to increase the size of the ports under the accelerator pump, to get rid of hesitation upon acceleration. Fuel injection is a different animal, of course. AND, what works for YOUR boat may not work for every other 120/140/3.0. But, whichever fuel system you have, FIRST: run that blower at least five minutes before cranking, or better yet, lift the engine cover and visually inspect for leaks, and sniff for gasoline before turning anything on. A boat explosion is no fun at all.
I always try turn over first nothing then I pump it. I have had them start first try and others I had to open butterfly open to start for the season.. crazy
I start mine about every month too because if I don't it ends up not idling and bogging down when you rapidly accelerate. Never had any problem until I moved to Palm Springs where it gets super hot. California gas doesn't have a very long shelve either and fuel stabilizer didn't help. I even installed and extra fuel filter and shutoff valve and that helped for one year but it was back to having the carb worked on the next year which had become a yearly necessity. Btw, when starting my Mercruiser 3.0 don't ever have to give it any throttle and it always starts right up. Since I've moved here I have to start all my small engines for my motorcycles, ATV's and generators too or they get gummed up really fast and only after a couple of months. I also siphon the gas (always make sure I don't bring it back with more than a 1/4 tank) and put in fresh 3 or 4 gallons.
It should start if you pump it a couple times, advance the throttle (!) and let er rip. Got trained at the dealer in 1993 when we picked one of these up.
Great video. This is my 10th season of my 2006 BL 175, and over the course of those many years, I have developed a very similar methodology for cold (more like hasn't been run in several weeks) cranks. It just gave me hell in particular trying to start it on a cold evening yesterday on a cold October day in Pittsburgh, PA. Had to do this about 3 times with time in between to prevent flooding when the first 2 tries didn't turn. Man, your boat is spotless, what year?
I bought my 1998 Sea Ray 180 Bowrider around 2001 for $8,000, but the center window was missing and it cost me $500. Still runs great. I did have to have a seal in the outdrive replaced for $400 last year.
Tip. My boat mechanic showed me the secret Open hood, and listen, when you push the throttle forward leave there and listen you will hear it spray fuel Pull back to neutral shove ahead again wait and it will do it again Works every time Bayliner 185BR
Hello sir, thank you for your informative videos, so I wanted to see if you can help me out. I have a sea ray 185 bow rider with a mercruiser 3.0 alpha 1. Do you have any input as to why trim up/ down was working perfectly fine , next day I went to check it before leaving to ramp and it is completely dead,. It acts like there is no power to it. Thank you in advance for your time.
You are going to need a voltage meter and check various points of the wiring for the trim solenoids and fuses. If you have one already or not get a wiring diagram for your set up. They are all over the web. It could be as simple as a corroded plug, or a bad switch.
I do the same thing on my 2003 Bayliner 192 with 3.0 Mercruiser which I just bought recently. Is this the typical startup on Mercruiser engines or Bayliner boats? Thanks for this video
I installed a manual fuel pump, the kind you find on small outboard engines, and all I do is pump it a few times untill I feel some resistance in pumping and then the motor starts first or second time I try. The previous owner used to spray wd40 in the carb and had a real hard time starting the motor.
I have a question, I have a 2001 mercruiser 3.0 and after I run it for 3 or 4 hrs pulling skiers and etc. it doesn’t want to idle low and if it goes dead it’s a pain to get cranked back up if it does! But usually cranks right up in a cold start just gives me issues when I’ve been running it for hrs?? Any suggestions would be helpful Thanks
I will believe everything you say just because Your boat is SOOOO F'i;ijefw;oij CLEAN!!!!! Yes sir I will do whatever you say I should do sir. Pump it 5 times? will do sir!
fiero880 But that is on/off switch right. I wonder how it will kill the engine if you fall, more likely you will yank it upward which is on. But anyways, what are those two extra gauges you have beside the horn button and beside the steering wheel? And also, how is the safety lanyard attached to the switch? Thanks in advance, just got my boat 3 days ago and still learning from it...
One time I accidently pulled it off and didn't know it. I was sitting in the middle of Lake Havasu trying to start it for a long time. Luckily the battery was strong and I finally noticed it laying next to the seat. Lol.
@@fenderbassfan this happened to me this year. It was pitch black outside too. I was so disappointed when I noticed it on the floor. Just happen to see it w my cellphone light. Lol
Hello I need to replace my hub bearings. I have the exact same boat and trailer. Can you tell me the size of bearings I need? If you have replaced them before.
Turning the blower on for a cold start is absolutely unnecessary. There are no vapors in the engine when it hasn't been running in weeks...there are no fuel vapors produced by an engine that hasnt been running. That's why theres a thing called a fuel tank......
You can go under the dash and put a piece of electrical tape on the ignition alarm. It really knocks down that high pitch hellish noise I don't want to hear when I'm on the water.
First, you run the blower for 4 or 5 minutes before the water or starting not just a few seconds. I realize that would make for a long boring video but you at least have to say it. Second, you don't run the water without the engine running just as you don't run the engine without the water running. Both should start at the same time - within a few seconds of each other - the same time is preferred. Third, if it doesn't start in the straight up and down position within a few seconds of cranking you have a problem that should be looked into. That's why it's called turnkey. Back and forth 20 times? You shouldn't have to do it once. And you shut off both the water and engine at the same time - within a few seconds of each other
I agree with most of your video, but why did you pump it first five times. After month or two carburators are probably dry, so just like you said, "If you don't have any fuel in a carburetor, ..."
LOL omg this is funny... i seriously thought pumping the throttle before start was some goofy shit only my old struggling boat requires because i figured it sets the choke position, and primes fuel into carb. i really thought it was just my own trick technique i figured out LOL... new to boats, new to old carbs, not new to mechanics atleast
Do you know why the boat has long beat after you first time you couldn't start up the engine. Mine has the same sounds(long beat), but it's after the engine was on about 20 second. Any one has an idea about it?
Thank you for this video. This is accordance to manual as well. Only 1/4 throttle - some cool youtubers start with 3/4 or 4/4 throttle just to show off. Will the engine stink some gasoline however when you do this starting procedure?
I think something with your carburetor settings or fuel/air mixture is wrong. This motor shouldn‘t start up so hard. I had an old 3.0 without TKS built 1994. Startet up perfectly with only pumping 2-3 times and 1/4 throttle even when not used for a longer time. On daily use on vacation, 1 pump and little throttle was enough for cold start. In my current boat i have a 5.0 carburetor. Cold starts without pumping at all, little to no throttle depending on outside temperature
How to correctly start a Bayliner 175: 1. Make sure key is in your pocket 2. Trailer boat to nearby marina 3. Trade in for a real boat with EFI I kid, I kid. The newer Bayliners actually look fairly decent!
That is why you fail to start from the first try: th-cam.com/video/brufYuYGxfI/w-d-xo.html You should keep key on ready to start position for 2 minutes
According to the Mercruiser manual, "If the engine has not run for a long period of time it may require a couple of attempts while the fuel bowl refills." Exactly how is cleaning a perfectly clean carb going to fix that ? And inside the manual it also states if needed you can open the throttle to full and then back to 1/4 to start. So instead of letting the engine loop over and over and several attempts if the engine has sat a long period of time, pumping the throttle 5 times to get what fuel may be in the bowl or fuel that has just come into the bowl to help assist the cold start ? TKS is a great system but it still requires the old fashion starting procedures as before.

He has a TKS, there is no reason to pump the throttle with a TKS.
Bayliner has always suggested pumping the throttle as part of the sparting proceedure. My 2000 Capri 3.0 only needs 2-3 pumps and it starts right up.
Thanks for taking the time to post this video. Just got my F17 FLIGHT series this morning. This is info that I need. Thanks from the UK

Thats how i start mine. Works every time and not destroying your motor
Thank you I am going to try that when I get my new boat
I start mine almost the same way, pump 3 times instead of 5 is all. I agree, what is cleaning the carb going to do if there is no gas in the bowl.
My mechanic just show me this way yesterday and what are the odds, I get this video recommended 🤭
I start mine a bit different. As you state, it doesn't help to pump it if the fuel bowl is empty. If you haven't started it in a month, the fuel bowl is most likely empty. Crank for 5 seconds then pump then start.

After researching it seems that those gauges prone to failure. Just the product bayliner used before 2009. Just get new gauge.

What does this pumping action do exactly?😊

It should start if you pump it a couple times, advance the throttle (!) and let er rip. Got trained at the dealer in 1993 when we picked one of these up.

I'm thinking about adding a primer. Just hook a switch to th electric pump to fill the float bowl.
Great Idea but I have seen this become or could become a fire hazard.
+fiero880 the carb should still meter the fuel and any over flow from the float still route back to the tank just like when you're running.
That's waaaay to hard to start. My mercruiser 5.7 starts cold with less than 2 seconds of cranking. No pumping necessary.
