I personally think people over estimate how much protein they need. Btw - canadian CPU powerlifting M1 champion in 2023, also competiting in strogman at 48 yo, as well a practicing Orthodox keeping the fasting days for last 30 years.
I am super lean and probably had hyper-thyroid my whole life. I switched to an animal-based diet and have been doing that for over 2 years now, and while making lots of gains in upper and lower body in the gym, I've been maintaining weight and even getting more cut. I eat a lot but with my diet, I cannot "lose" my abs. Eating 400 to 500 grams of saturated fat daily and my obliques/abs and back have done nothing but lean out. How to say I have no choice but to have an 8-pack? Also, I'm doing full-body workouts and have about equal or more energy than I used to despite no carbs - nowadays carbs kind of slow me down.
Father Bless, I'm delighted I found this video, I am a Naval Officer and don't want to give up fasting, and I wanted to get some ideas on how to still maintain strength and fitness throughout fasting seasons. It isn't powerlifting but a lot of the lessons carry over. I still need to get a lot of protein and I always struggled to come up with ideas.
Intensity is the make or break, but is also the break. If you go hard you can easily blow out a wrist or pec bench, tweak your back, tear your knee ligaments; so just keep that in mind.
Tip for everyone: buy some precooked freezed calamari or equal that's coated (I don't the right English word - just like chicken nuggets). Throw it into the airfrier for 15 min and serve with some sauce (I use sweetsour) and maybe some rice (jasmine rice is 10 min to boil). You got a satiating plate full of protein in 20 min that tastes like chicken. I ate that almost every night this year's Pascha lent. I really loved the rice with beans option!
I rocked the male model look for too long and didn’t realize the effects it had on me until after a couple of years. I’ve always felt my best at higher teens of body fat percentage and it’s helped so much gaining sone weight back

@@misko933 in my opinion, go by how you feel in terms of your energy, sleep quality, and progression in the gym. I was probably over 15% before it started to come back more but I grew up at a higher bodyfat
In my opinion, in a civilized societal setting, a man should be built like you. If you are forced into a war or some survival scenario, the constant physical exertion and limited resources will turn you into something leaner, you shouldn't make your normal diet into something that deliberately makes you too lean. This is why soldiers and the like are typically leaner, but once they get out of service, they bulk up if they continue the same diet and gym routine.
So weird I used to watch Pete Rubish / Eric Lilliebridge / Konstant Konstantinovs when I was 15/16 and would go crazy in the gym and just discovered you through COTL and i'm getting back into the gym. Cool video 🙏
Hey Father Moses, I really want to contradict you on what you said about being lean and testosterone. Just let me know if you want to know why i think being lean is the default for a man. Thank you for your videos. They're really helping me right now. So many Christians/Preachers/Priests don't address the problems that we're facing as a men nowadays. I'm so thankful that I found your channel I've got a big "American" smile on my face right now because you mentioned so many names that are familiar to me but that are unknown outside of lifting circles. Great video. As a bodybuilder and new to Orthodoxy, Lenten fasting brought many challenges. But having competed for many years and therefore having prepped for many shows, dropping meat & dairy wasn’t at all catastrophic to my training. PLANNING is key as well as finding protein options & combinations. Lenten is not the season for PR’s or great hypertrophy 😂 But if you’re a competitive BB it actually works right in to competition season! We suffer to get ourselves on stage, but now we sacrifice to get ourselves closer to God as well. Figure out your caloric needs. Take into consideration energy drops etc as you might consider changing your training schedule to accommodate lower caloric intake. The real challenge for bodybuilders is NOT fasting to get shredded, but to focus on what is truly important in this life. Train with joy!☦️
I also have a power rack at home. I haven't been doing it long enough to be crazy strong but I went from 135lbs and super skinny to 190lbs. During Lent I embrace the suck and get by with 4 scoops of protein powder, half gallon of low fat milk, and a couple tuna sandwiches for my one meal. 250g of protein and about 2280 calories. Goal being to retain muscle while at a deficit.
That's not fasting... You're just dieting... The church presents foods that we should abstain from for a reason... Look up the channel Orthodox Wisdom and check out their latest video about this subject.
@@ashgonza92 Well let's do some math here. 1.2g per pound of bodyweight as an upper limit at a deficit is not unreasonable, right? That's 228g per day. But oh no I've over-consumed 22g of protein. How much does 22g of protein cost?

unless it was a dexa scan your bf% is almost certainly higher - 5% bodyfat is close to IFBB competition standard, so if you're not seeing veins and striations all over your body, its unlikely that you're actually 5%, probably in the 8-12 range, which still makes you leaner than most
@@youareaspook5897 yea i do have both vains and striations (altho not hardcore like bodybuilders, i can see them when i flex only, and not everywhere, its mostly on pecs). I did InBody scan, it says that its 98% correct so idk
I worked with the inbody scanners most commercial gyms, fitness studios, dieticians use, as well as dexa scans. They can be way off. I had a normal looking mom get tested at “3%” body fat…. She would’ve been dead, literally. I always take them with a HEFTY grain of salt.

I currently bench press 140kg deadlift 180kg (not sure about squat). And am also a Greek Orthodox Christian, I would love to compete in powerlifting at a later time, but am very tempted to introduce steroids in my journey. (Of course not at this age, but in the future). And I was wondering what your take is on this. I understand that once people indulge in these kind of things they are labeled as “not natural” and that doesn’t seem to me as a very Christian thing to do. What’s your opinion on this? Many thanks and sorry for the long question. Amen
