Another good thing to note when lining for a solid black fill tattoo, line in grey wash and fill in with undiluted black. That way the black outline doesn't stand out when healed.
I'm brand new with my first machine and thought, using fake skin even, that shading first for some places might give me a better look in the end, rather than going dark to light, religiously...my first stenciled outline gives me pause to try it. @@TerrieJohnson731 a good quality "traditional" 7 round liner is a pretty bold line. Its easier to start out with 9rl and even a 14rl when practicing. Then step down to finer groupings as you learn control.

I've got mini canvases wanting to be done and I don't want to make too many passes for the line width required. I'm also getting a fifty box of 3RL for SUPER fine. Am I going in the right direction?
@@TerrieJohnson731 heres what i used to learn. 9RL. 13 Curved mag (#12) and 9 and 11 curved mag (#12). As i got more comfortable lining i steped it down. Ive been tattooing for 15 years and about 2 years ago i started doing single needle fine line and even using 5 curved mags for super detail oriented tattoos. Stay away from those large mags until you have a solid foundation with packing and even powder shade. You can mess someone up with a big mag if youre not familiar with how they run in skin.

Nico Love Unfortunately single needle lines aren’t really known for their longevity, but you can ensure legibility by allowing room for the lines to diffuse without getting muddled. Things like single needle stippling will blur and look like shading, but lines can get mushy so you need to give them room to grow and remain distinct.

I don’t want to be an asshole here, but this is the worst way to do a bracelet kind of line. First the outline will be crooked af if you go with the round liner. Use a flat magnum and make a blood line using it sideways to make the outline and then fill it with same magnum. You will have a sharper outline and a solid fill on the inside, going with the circle motion will take forever and I can guaranteed that you will miss a spot. And brother if you want to do better lines I’ll give you this tip. If you are doing small lines or shapes LOCK your shoulder, elbow and wrist. And move only your fingers. If you are doing medium lines or shapes, lock your fingers, elbow and shoulder. And use only a wrist movement. If you want to make big straight lines, lock fingers and wrist and use your elbow to drag the line toward your body. Use the natural compasses that you have in your body. No hate, just facts.
Fantastic idea! I was thinking this morning about" soaking" the open area in ink for a short bit for giving the ink time to seep in rather than going over it repeatedly and chewing up my future clients.
I watched the cps video but ran into a problem I use bronc hummingbird pen it says 16000 rpm but says don’t use 7+ volts but start at 4 and says operating voltage 5-7 how would I figure for my lining shading and color packing
If you use enough process ointment you can def pull long lines whilst gliding the side of your machine hand along the skin. You way works too tho obviously. Thanks for the vids. I remember watching all your vids when I was in my apprenticeship and they helped a lot. Guy Atchinsons book, reinventing the tattoo, is good also.
Hi Jono! Im an apprentice up in Scotland, and I too use ReelSkin products (they're fucking amazing for skint apprentices like me lol), I just got to the bit where you used the stencil on the arm and you said that stencils will never transfer onto these things (the fake skin) like they would on real skin. I struggled for MONTHS with this, and I found out that if you put your stencil gel ( I found stencil stuff is better than electrum for reelskin products, I use electrum for real flesh), whatever you use, onto the fake skin and leave it for 5-10 mins, then put the stencilled paper onto it, and leave it again for 10-15 mins (I prep the day before I tattoo ReelSkin so I leave it overnight but it doesn't take that long, I just like to be prepared for the next day) it's pretty much there for the long haul and just as good as stencil on real live flesh :) I know this video is around 6 months old now, but if this is something your apprentices struggle with and you havent had the time to experiment with then maybe have them try out this method :) It saved me from pulling my hair out plenty of times ^_^
I'm doing a black band using 5rl for out line and 9 rs to fill , but the result is that my out line is darker than the filling should I use lighter ink for the out line or slow my hand on the filling or use different needle for filling
It’s most likely caused by using the round shader. I personally find round shaders seem to put ink in a little bit ‘softer’ which would create the effect you’re talking about. Try swapping the round shader for a small mag or if a mag is too big try just using a round liner. For an even denser fill, use a double-zero round liner. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!
Hand speed vs voltage, needle groupings, find your groove. Also are you hitting hard enough? Also use the same ink for lining and packing, some inks brands sell lining inks and packing inks some are thinner than others, If you use Dynamic black for both you'll get the exact tone. Use the right needle for the job f you were painting a wall you wouldn't use a small 1/4 inch round brush, same with tattooing, if you use a small round shader for a big area, you'll take too long most likely leaving your client in a lot of discomfort.

Basically what he is saying at the start of the video where he said do not overreach yourself and then he talks about out on the inside the lion. if you ever done woodwork or metal work you would Scribe a lion and always cut on the waste side of the lion , you would be a good side in them classes you were always told to cut and have your cutting device on the waste same of meaning, metal work you could then ,foil with to the edge of the line and have it perfect in woodwork , you could then plain it and sand, to have the line perfect very same principle....

Id be interested in a video showing the process of shading gradiations from dark to light. Like the dipping in ink and water. Cuz i have a moms grey wash set. Also kuro sumi greywash and it seems like they all go in dark black. Im having trouble being able to shade light greys it seems no matter what shade i use it comes out dark as f. Please any help is much appreciated.
Hi Jono your video are amazing! I wonder if you could give me an advice. I'm having a problem of the ink keep dropping from the tube tip. When the needle touch skin, quite lot of ink is coming from the tube and its covering stencil line so I can't see it clearly. To avoid it I always have to reduce the ink little bit inside of the tip by touching with tissue after dipped in ink cap. I'm using right size of tip for needle. The thing is it's happening depending on machines. Some machine don't have this problem at all. Some tube-needle setting, all coli machines. I categorize them by "dropping machine" and "non dropping machine". All my short stroke, fast machines tend to be in "dropping machine" group and long stroke slow machine are in "non dropping machine" group. Is that make sense to you? Or my machine setting is wrong? Could you please tell me your opinion? Thank you.
Ok so your fast liner machines tend to be kicking ink out over the skin. Is that right? A mistake a lot of people tend to make is that they’re just filling way too much into the tip. Are you actually running your machine when you dip into the ink cup? If you are then this is almost certainly the problem. Your liners are running faster than your shaders so when you dip into the cup it’s drawing up way too much ink really fast. Personally I don’t run the machine in the ink cup. I tap the tip of the needle in it l, take it out and then run the machine to draw up the tiny amount that got drew into the tip just from the little tap. So my advice would be not to run your machine whilst dipping. Hope this helps!

I watch some artists and some have a small puddle and some have none. I've noticed the rotary makes less... I think
At 16:53, you edited out the exact part I waited 16 minutes and 53 seconds for... I'm always watching other artists to see how they change the direction of their lines within a single "pull". Within a narrow margin for error, how are you changing directions? I have my method, but it seems inconsistent and inefficient with moving myself and my client all the time.
aamantium1 sorry the edit was what you wanted to see! 😩 Basically my rule with changing direction is, if it’s a kind of smooth curve then I just follow through the line in one fluid motion from A to B. But if there’s a drastic change of direction let’s say the top of the letter T and the bottom part of the letter T, I would make 2 separate lines, so basically pull the top first and then pull the bottom. Like the first line in this script, or the letter C, I go from top to bottom but as I'm coming back up or if I go from right to left, it is difficult to change machine and needle angle and still maintain a clean line.

I guess I just don't understand that if the epidermis has been damaged by ruff tattooing Where does the pigment get deposited into? I’ve seen the aftermath of microblading because I used to have an spmu tattooist that work for me. We never did microblading ourselves but obviously had clients that had turned to having brows tattooed that used to get them microbladed. My personal thoughts on microblading is that it’s a really bad idea. I’ve seen some clients eyebrows that are basically pink scars now. This sort of damage can become a lot worse if they’re tattooed over badly. I probably wouldn’t recommend tattooing your own eyebrows but if you do BE CAREFUL!! Scars can be tattooed over and made to look nice if they’re done right. It’s normal for brows to need a touch up a couple of weeks after they’ve first been done but are usually alright after that. If the ink is constantly falling out then it could be a number of issues. Could be cheap pigment, wrong pigment, machine not running correctly, bad technique, going too shallow to name just a few things. My advice would be, if it’s for yourself, then I’d source a really reputable spmu artist and get them done by them. You’ll be surprised at how much information you’ll pick up just by watching them. If you’re doing them on someone else then obviously practice, practice & practice some more until you’ve absolutely nailed your technique. I don’t know your background, training, qualifications etc. so obviously if you are competent already and are just struggling with scar tissue then I’d say maybe go a TINY bit deeper and also maybe do a few more passes on the same line but don’t overwork the area, especially on a scar. Out sum ointment on the side of ur glove on ur tattoo hand n u can glide while still stretching the skin.... You’ll find no 2 skins act exactly the same way so it’s just a matter of working out what’s working best for that particular skin to take the ink. The most important points are good stretch, correct needle depth, correct machine speed, quality equipment and good technique. Thanks for watching!

To be honest it’s not much different from tattooing normal skin. The needles are the same as you would use on any tattoo. I’d say the only real difference is that sometimes you might need to give slightly more pressure than usual. Thanks for watching!

Hey jono I always appreciate your insight and dedication to the craft. I have a question about shading; do you find that it's easier to shade with the pen on a forward motion instead of using the backside of the cartridge? Or is there no difference?
That’s actually a really good question. I think the most logical answer would be to shade with a forward motion purely because of how the ink flows down the needles in the tip. The needles are seated in the tip and in theory when you shade in a forward motion you’re keeping them seated exactly where they belong and therefore the ink flow will be more consistent as a pose to shading backwards which try’s to pull the needles away from their natural seated position. This would be the logical answer. Though in practice, I’ve got to admit I probably shade 50/50 backwards and forwards just depending on the position my machine is in at the time. I don’t notice any difference in the final result either way. Thanks for watching!
This patchyness you speak of happens to me often and it drives me crazy thanks so much for your videos I learn soemthing knew every time I watch especially the one you did on cokor packing with the paint brush and how you dip in water and all this improved how easliy I cokor things in dramatically thanks bro
I learned that there sometimes are patchy areas where you dont really notice while in the skin but rather after sometime has passed, tip to see those aomewhat invisible patchy areas while you can still go back over them, take your spray bottle and saturate the area, while your looking at the area thats under the "water" will seem very clear and vivid, and will clearly show the patchy areas if any, and this works with almost any color but especially with black.
Where do I buy cheap but useableneedles by the way I'm still an Amazon guy and getting paid now over nite I got tonnes of work but needles sent great I don't think but get the job done.sometimes my needle moves inside my tip but if I over tension I heat up with my Amazon machine..any tips..

I gently scratch my lines in after opening the skin from my first line and recently painless and crisp are words people use with me now.

Little tip I find helpful: stretch the skin in the direction of the line you're pulling. Less wobble when you let it relax

rawad hanna slow down for the filling. Maybe use a different needle too. Say a 7 flat mag

The speed point was a great one. Also back brushing can make your packing/shading smoother.
With a mag its absolutely the best way...but in the small areas with a round shader I tend to think it damages the skin

It all depends on how big the tattoo is. If it’s a delicate signature I’d probably use a 3RL.

Ok so your fast liner machines tend to be kicking ink out over the skin. Is that right? A mistake a lot of people tend to make is that they’re just filling way too much into the tip. Are you actually running your machine when you dip into the ink cup? If you are then this is almost certainly the problem. Your liners are running faster than your shaders so when you dip into the cup it’s drawing up way too much ink really fast. Personally I don’t run the machine in the ink cup. I tap the tip of the needle in it l, take it out and then run the machine to draw up the tiny amount that got drew into the tip just from the little tap. So my advice would be not to run your machine whilst dipping. Hope this helps!

@@JonoSmithTattoo I've had this issue as well. Wiping ink and not running machine while dipping, and keeping my needle out enough helped, but I'm thinking maybe it's the vibration or ink?? I watch some artists and some have a small puddle and some have none. I've noticed the rotary makes less... I think

At 16:53, you edited out the exact part I waited 16 minutes and 53 seconds for... I'm always watching other artists to see how they change the direction of their lines within a single "pull". Within a narrow margin for error, how are you changing directions? I have my method, but it seems inconsistent and inefficient with moving myself and my client all the time.
aamantium1 sorry the edit was what you wanted to see! 😩 Basically my rule with changing direction is, if it’s a kind of smooth curve then I just follow through the line in one fluid motion from A to B. But if there’s a drastic change of direction let’s say the top of the letter T and the bottom part of the letter T, I would make 2 separate lines, so basically pull the top first and then pull the bottom. @@JonoSmithTattoo No apologies required friend. My issue is more with changing directions with my machine than the line. Like the first line in this script, or the letter C, I go from top to bottom but as I'm coming back up or if I go from right to left, it is difficult to change machine and needle angle and still maintain a clean line.
If your lefty pull line left easier on wrist movement might cramp

I’ve seen the aftermath of microblading because I used to have an spmu tattooist that work for me. We never did microblading ourselves but obviously had clients that had turned to having brows tattooed that used to get them microbladed. My personal thoughts on microblading is that it’s a really bad idea. I’ve seen some clients eyebrows that are basically pink scars now. This sort of damage can become a lot worse if they’re tattooed over badly. I probably wouldn’t recommend tattooing your own eyebrows but if you do BE CAREFUL!! Scars can be tattooed over and made to look nice if they’re done right. It’s normal for brows to need a touch up a couple of weeks after they’ve first been done but are usually alright after that. If the ink is constantly falling out then it could be a number of issues. Could be cheap pigment, wrong pigment, machine not running correctly, bad technique, going too shallow to name just a few things. My advice would be, if it’s for yourself, then I’d source a really reputable spmu artist and get them done by them. You’ll be surprised at how much information you’ll pick up just by watching them. If you’re doing them on someone else then obviously practice, practice & practice some more until you’ve absolutely nailed your technique. I don’t know your background, training, qualifications etc. so obviously if you are competent already and are just struggling with scar tissue then I’d say maybe go a TINY bit deeper and also maybe do a few more passes on the same line but don’t overwork the area, especially on a scar. You’ll find no 2 skins act exactly the same way so it’s just a matter of working out what’s working best for that particular skin to take the ink. The most important points are good stretch, correct needle depth, correct machine speed, quality equipment and good technique. Thanks for watching!

To be honest it’s not much different from tattooing normal skin. The needles are the same as you would use on any tattoo. I’d say the only real difference is that sometimes you might need to give slightly more pressure than usual. Thanks for watching!

Hey jono I always appreciate your insight and dedication to the craft. I have a question about shading; do you find that it's easier to shade with the pen on a forward motion instead of using the backside of the cartridge? Or is there no difference?
That’s actually a really good question. I think the most logical answer would be to shade with a forward motion purely because of how the ink flows down the needles in the tip. The needles are seated in the tip and in theory when you shade in a forward motion you’re keeping them seated exactly where they belong and therefore the ink flow will be more consistent as a pose to shading backwards which try’s to pull the needles away from their natural seated position. This would be the logical answer. Though in practice, I’ve got to admit I probably shade 50/50 backwards and forwards just depending on the position my machine is in at the time. I don’t notice any difference in the final result either way. Thanks for watching!
This patchyness you speak of happens to me often and it drives me crazy thanks so much for your videos I learn soemthing knew every time I watch especially the one you did on cokor packing with the paint brush and how you dip in water and all this improved how easliy I cokor things in dramatically thanks bro
I learned that there sometimes are patchy areas where you dont really notice while in the skin but rather after sometime has passed, tip to see those aomewhat invisible patchy areas while you can still go back over them, take your spray bottle and saturate the area, while your looking at the area thats under the "water" will seem very clear and vivid, and will clearly show the patchy areas if any, and this works with almost any color but especially with black.
