Amok Draumr 5.0 XL for Tall people!?!!?

  • Are you tall and considering getting the Amok Draumr 5.0 XL??
    Remember 2 things:
    1. Make sure you have a pad that is 220cm long!! Otherwise the hammock won't stretch out!!
    2. Ideally get a pad with baffles that run lengthwise!!
    If in doubt at all, just buy the Amok pad, it's more $$$, on top of the hammock, but totally worth it!!

    You have to loosen the straps by your legs to put it in chair mode. Top straps=raise/lower back
    Middle straps=stationery
    Bottom straps=raise/lower legs

    Looking into getting one of the Amok hammocks and was specifically thinking of getting a nemo tensor to use for both tent camping and the hammock. Then I started to do some research on if it work but couldn't find much so far. Checked out this video randomly for the review and perfectly enough that is exactly what you are showing. Thanks for making this video, it helped me out greatly!

    Great vid showing the importance of buying their mat for the XL version. I was on the fence about buying the shorter version and using my Xped mat, to save som money, but I went for the XL and the Fjol ultralight instead and I don't regret it!
    I just recieved it this week so I haven't tried it out more then in the backyard, relaxing in it with some beers. Works absolutley fine for that aswell! :)
    Looking forward to taking it out for some camping trips as the summer has just begun here in Sweden.
    I hope you get some nice outdoor nights in it! Cheers!

    Thanks for the video!
    I viewed the importance of the chambers in the pad that runs lengthwise in several youtube videos before I bought the hammock and pad. I have a shorter length longwise running tube pad that still works if you are not too tall. But you really need the Long Wide pad for the XLs.
    Your lines are a little high for safety. You can tighten the upper straps to raise your head a little (not as tight as the chair mode.). I have last years XL

    • @bladesepicadventures7165
      @bladesepicadventures7165  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I must have missed that in the reviews that I watched, cause I just initially couldn't figure out the issue. I'm so pleased that I switched over.
      Once I get into the hammock, I'm only a couple of feet off the ground, so I guess I could lower them. Unfortunately, here at home, I don't have that option as the carport is the only place I can hang it.
      Took your advice and raised the upper straps and that fixed another sore back problem I had, happy days now :)

    I've tried to bit peices of kit together before many of times and got sick of it. When I saw the amok I did the unthinkable and bought the sleeping pad, tarp and hammock together 🤣. It was expensive but was the way to go.

    Brilliant review well made, I’ve been trying out my mates Amok 3.0 in the garden and had exactly the same issue as you. My thoughts were the same as yours that my Nemo tenso alpine xl was not rigid enough for this hammock, and you’ve confirmed it for me. I am thinking of purchasing the new Amok 5.0 xl and a Amok xl mat to go with it. I already have a DD frontline hammock which is great but not as spacious as the Amok and doesn’t allow you wake up overlooking beautiful scenery. I was wondering if the Tree straps you get with it are very long as they don’t seem to be on the Amok 3.0 that I tried. You did a great job on this review and I thoroughly enjoyed watching it and I will be subscribing, happy camping mate, John from uk

    I've watched a few fancy vids on the draumr and have enjoyed yours the most as it seems the most genuine,laid back , real life and non Instagram review. I'm particularly interested in the seat aspect as I might use it for studying /meditation etc . Do you find the different positions available to be genuinely comfortable for extended sitting?
    Finally ..regarding sleeping on your side in a fetal position ..does that work well or is there some compromise?
    I always feel a little disappointed that the mat isn't a lot wider.
    I know it's nearly days and you haven't had it long but perhaps you could answer these questions in a future video if you get a chance?
    I've just subscribed so will keep an eye out.
    Lovely place you've got there ..so much better than brexshit Britain ! I'm very envious!
    Happy adventuring
    All the best

      @bladesepicadventures7165  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Bill, I really appreciate the positive feedback!
      I have only slept three nights in the Draumr so far and used the chair mode a little. I would suggest for meditation it would be ok - as it's a pretty relaxing position. This is probably why it might not be the best for studying. But I've got nothing to back that up.
      In regards to side sleeping, I think it would be fine. The first two nights I had in the Draumr, I woke up with a really sore lower back. So much so, that I woke up in the night aching and rolled onto my side to try and alleviate the pain. Laying on my side wasn't an issue and I was able to sleep the rest of the night through. On my third night, I raised the head end and that fixed the sore back problem. I was able to sleep through the night on my back without any issues.
      The width of the mat is definitely something to be conscious of. I am quite broad, so my arms hang off the sides when laying on my back. This hasn't caused any issues yet with getting cold, so that's good. As for side sleeping, unless you really curled up with your knees close to your chest, I don't think you'd hang off the sides.
      Maybe I'll set it up again over the weekend and do another video to cover these couple of things :)
      Thanks for subscribing!!

    Excellent review. The camo colour is really nice. That blue pad is their ultralight version? I notice their regular pad is 63cm wide and the winter and light versions are 65cm. Have you tested this in summer? I have been wonderng how well it sleeps in hot weather.

      @bladesepicadventures7165  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Timo - Yes, you are correct, the blue pad is their Ultralight version. I actually slept on it this last weekend, but in a tent situation. The weather at the time was very cold (4 degrees), however I had no issues. I just went and checked the website to find that it is rated down to -7! Wow, I didn't realise. We are coming to the end of the Australian summer here, but I intend to get out a few more times, so will be conscious of the temp. Keep an eye out for upcoming videos and I'll mention if there is any impact on being too warm in summer.

    Great review, this is like the limousine of the hammock:) I never try this kind of hammock before and that price is a little too high campare to the gather in hammock, I wonder how are you going to setup your tarp with this kind of hammock out in the field?

    • @bladesepicadventures7165
      @bladesepicadventures7165  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it's not cheap, but I have to admit, it's worth it! I was very hesitant to spend that kind of money, but pulled the trigger on it. Once I had it set up right, there's NO WAY I'd go back to a gathered hammock. Not even in the same realm of comfort (for me).
      If you want to see what it's like set up in the field, go check out any of my recent hiking videos and that will show you. Hope that helps.

    I'm a bit torn between this and the warbonnet ridgerunner. Have you found this relatively easy to get in and out of (with a bit of practice) and into the sleeping bag? Do you find yourself tilting head down/up during the night? Glad to hear postage is pretty fast to Melbourne - I'm an hour east of you. I think the two main things that will sell the Amok to me are the lounge chair function (probably most of my use) and the 30 day money back guarantee. Cheers - J.

    • @bladesepicadventures7165
      @bladesepicadventures7165  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm not familiar with the Ridgerunner, but I am pleased with the Amok.
      Getting in and out definitely takes some practice. Once you're in and then trying to get into a sleeping bag is also very challenging. So much so, that I have given up and just unzip the foot end of the sleeping bag if I need to get up in the night.
      Alternatively, if the temp is ok, I'll just throw the sleeping bag over me like a quilt and tuck my feet in.
      But the challenges provided by the sleeping bag issue isn't really any worse than a normal hammock and the upside of the comfort is great.

    • @bladesepicadventures7165
      @bladesepicadventures7165  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My shoulders are quite broad, so as my arms lay, the upper arm hang off the sides a bit. Though in a sleeping bag, you are tucked in a little closer.
      I wear a long sleeve top as well to ensure they don't get cold. It hasn't been a problem except for the first night in a short sleeved shirt (in winter).

    This crazy thing should be the official 'poster child' of the phrase "if it ain't broke don't fix it' ! There is not a single supportive reason to try to hold this fabric laden nightmare above a traditional Hammock. I've watched several videos of men touting this monstronsity and all looked absolutely foolish trying to get into this thing and forcing a cry about the comfort level which anyone can see is the least comfortable device to try and replace a 'no brainer' Hammock .

    • @13Voodoobilly69
      @13Voodoobilly69 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      You say that but yet every person that switched from a traditional hammock to an Amock all love them and would never go back. Getting into them is a learning curve and this guy hasn’t got there yet. Watch his part 2 video of his three day hike with the hammock, 34 minutes in you see him slipping into the hammock easily and the end review of the hike he loves the hammock and has traditional hammocks also. 🤷🏻‍♂️

    • @bladesepicadventures7165
      @bladesepicadventures7165  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yep this is true. I almost ate it a couple of times, but it didn't take long to get the technique down. The Amok is so much better (in my experience) than a traditional hammock. But you're right, if you love your traditional hammock, all power to you, stick to it :)

I won't ever go back so sleeping in a normal hammock after sleeping in this one.
      You are correct, no rain fly (tarp) included initially. I bought it all bundled together and don't regret it at all. I've actually spent in excess of $500 on a normal hammock set up, that I no longer use and has been retired to the kids. This cost me more, but oh well, you live and learn :)
