That's John singing on Anna. And Chains is actually a cover of a black quartet as you suspected. There's a lot of covers in these first albums. Actually Anna is a cover of Arthur Alexander. Half of the tracks here are covers. First George composition is on the next album. And I don't know if you are aware of this fact, but this was recorded live (live in the studio)in one day session, then George Martin came back other day and added the little Misery piano and a little celesta on Baby its you and that was it.
Anna is actually a cover and it was sung by John. John had a cold during the recording so his voice sounds a bit unusual. Their early albums included more covers as it was common back then. Baby it’s you is also sung by John and also a cover :D
Just for info, John sang on “Anna Go to Him” and George sang “Chains”. You were right, though, about the early Beatles sounding a bit like a black R&B group in their early days. They were very influenced by the music of the 1950s, including rock ‘n roll and Tamla Motown, though delivered with their own unique style right from the beginning 👍
And remember, most of the songs on this first albums were the songs they played live on stage every night at their show at the Cavern. There's a country and a soul sound to them because they were HUGE fans of black music from America.

@@Napowilson76 Yup, they were trying to give their fans good value. They thought including the singles songs on an album would short change their fans, so it was pretty much band policy, at least for most of their recording career together, to do two extra songs as a prelude to their albums.
This album was recorded in 1962-1963, so it reflects the late 50's & early 60's vibes. "Anna" was sung by John with backup vocals from George. "Chains" was sung by George. John sang the main part of "Baby It's You", the "Sha La Lal" part was sung by George. "Do You Want to Know a Secret" is sung by George and written by John. "There's a Place" is sung by John with backing from Paul. Songs were generally 2 1/2 to 3 minutes back then because radio would not play anything more than 3 minutes. They do all genres of music; you can't stick them to just one thing. The Beatles grew leaps and bounds from this album to their last album, all done in 7 1/2 years.
I have watched many people react to The Beatles but I have to say you do it best. You actually take the time to research them and understand their perspectives and it is really refreshing to see. Keep it up!!!
These are all either written by John or Paul or covers written by others. George sings “So You Want to Know a Secret,” but it was written by John and Paul. They wrote songs for George and Ringo to sing.

John sang lead on “Baby It’s You”, which is a cover of a song by girl group The Shirelles from 1961. In 1969 a group Smith covered the song achieving a #5 Top 40 hit.
They recorded all song in only one section and Martin said is crazy as they hours were passing by the better they sound. John delivered the cover Twist and shout with his throat irritated and sounds spectacular!! 14 songs in just one day. That's impressive!!

I love these videos. Watching you discover the magic of the Beatles takes me back to my childhood. And I was born in 76. I had to listen to everything they did.
John's vocal on "Twist and Shout" is one of the greatest rock performances of all time. Basically every cool rock singer since then has been trying to sound like that and capture that energy.
They just need to spend a whole day recording vocals with a bad cold and end on a banger of a track, like John did, that'll do it, but don't expect to be able to speak for weeks after.
Your reaction to the line : 'She was just seventeen / if you know what I mean' .... well, that probably means something different to everyone. I know what it means to me, by golly. When John and Paul were writing it, Paul had the line 'she'd never been a beauty queen'. John said no and it was replaced. 'Anna (Go To Him)' was John. He had a cold. Written by Arthur Alexander. It would only be about a year before they were writing entire albums. What is fascinating is that as busy as they were touring they still managed to put out well-written album after album year after year.
Ive loved the Beatles since I was 3 year olds in 1986. But you are making me fall in love with them again. Watching you react is fun as hell. I love that every generation gets something out of the boys.
These are great tracks to play when you're getting chores done around the house. You'll find yourself singing along with good energy and won't resent the time it takes. You can't be in a bad mood with these early albums playing.
Yo bro thanks for reacting Please Please Me which it was released on March 22, 1963. This album was recorded originally in mono. Here's the release dates in case you're interested in: March 22, 1963 (Mono) February 26, 1987 (first CD issue in mono format) September 9, 2009 (in both mono and stereo for the very first time)
And the record company used to have a two minute forty second limit on tunes. Something like that. Once oceans of money started coming in the boys got to stretch their wings a bit
I respect you, man. There are so few ppl who take the time to listen to songs that only get better with age. Unlike the majority of the ppl in their 20s and under, you know what good music sounds like. Keep it up ;)
For these earlier albums it's a good thing to note that many of the songs are covers, given that a lot of artists did that at the time. Lots of pop songs were written by industry songwriters to be performed by anyone, or artists just took other somewhat popular or lesser known tracks to use on their albums either for exposure or just because they like the song. If you look at the track list on Wikipedia or Genius, you'll see that Anna, Chains, Boys, Baby It's You, Taste of Honey, and Twist and Shout are all cover songs. This is another reason why some tracks have more of an old school 50's R&B type feel than others, because that's what they were lol.
Gotta realize, a lot of these songs are covers. Several originally done by American girl groups. That’s why Ringo is singing about boys for one. Carole King wrote Chains and Isley Brothers did the original Twist and Shout.
Darius, glad to hear you're feeling better. Great idea to listen to the Beatles chronologically (aside from the couple later albums you already did). They were great at every stage and evolved so quickly, it's amazing to see it unfold. One thing astounding about their growth is how the 3 writers evolved together and kept up with each other. None of them got stuck in early Sixties mode, which could have easily happened with lesser talents. Simply amazing!
Anna Go to Him was sung by John Lennon. Might have sounded like George because this was recorded before John shredded his vocal chords recording Twist and Shout. He sang so hard he ended up spitting up blood and said his voice was never the same.
This album was basically their stage act or all the songs they played live at The Cavern Club and in theaters at that time. Please, Please, Me was originally sung at a much slower pace. George Martin their producer, suggested they speed it up and after they did, Martin said, that’s a number one hit!
ringo was only used for 1 or MAYBEEE 2 songs per album because he's incredibly shy and gets crazy stage anxiety. he's admitted in interviews about all the times he ended up vomiting backstage before performing so unfortunately we dont get more ringo like THAT
he also got tonsillitis and tonsil removal surgery after this album which i would imagine effected his voice a little. side note excuse me for going thru all of your videos lmfao
This album had six cover songs on it . Chains, Anna, Boys, Baby it’s you, A taste of honey and Twist and shout. Of all of them, they really made Twist and shout their own.
The Beatles were red hot from the start. I was only a little girl when this music was released, but I well remember the impact they made…think atomic bomb. They blew everything apart. It was glorious.
Emperor Darius, a powerful greeting from Australia. I was extremely sceptical at first as it is very difficult to run one past me at any given time. I looked and looked, but after seven of your videos , I was completely floored. You are the only one that has ever picked up on the fact that the song, There's a Place, is an empirical song on that album. There isn't a band on earth today that could do it justice. It is just too difficult. You are nothing short of a genius, an like I say, it is very hard for someone like me to be fooled. We need people like you to set the RECORD straight. Love your work.
DARIUS - don't forget - there's a whole shitload of Beatles singles that are NOT on any albums. You have to do Past Masters, Volumes One and Two. And those were HITS, and B-sides!
Great reaction. It's up to your usual thoughtful, discerning standard. Keep it up! I love that you're exploring the evolution of the Beatles' discography. Their early stuff was all about love, it was their take on the conventional love songs that dominated the pop scene at the time. And while romantic love continued to occupy their lyrics for the next few albums, with each passing one, you can clearly see how quickly they were maturing musically and lyrically. When you check out their next album, released in the U.S., "Meet the Beatles", you'll see what I mean. I'll be joining you on this Bealtes retrospective for sure!
I particularly like how they developed the concept of love in their songs from this romantic teen ideal to a universal cosmic force - I think love was their central message (no matter their failings as individual humans) - a welcome antidote to the hate pumped out by politicians earlier in the twentieth century
The Beatles basically recorded parts of their stage program at the time on a single day of recording. It includes 8 originals and 6 covers. The work is now 61 years old. It wins, when one compare it to the stuff else, that was released during that time period. This freshness and joy of playing is rarely found on these albums at a time, when an album was not yet the norm and was usually just a compilation of previous singles and a few fillers. Someone probably already wrote it, but the "Anna" cover is sung by Lennon. Harrison sings "Chains" and "Do you to know a secret"....
Good that you decided to start (over) from the beginning, with listening to the Beatles. Subscribed for the ride. Nice to see you discovering and enjoying.
Thank you for the reaction! Great job. I've been listening to the Beatles for many years and it took me a while to differentiate between John and George's voices on many of this album's songs.
something important to remember! as far as i’m aware, the fourth track on all or most beatle records are george’s songs! chains is also a cover so don’t worry about that being george’s song lol, it’s not. his first song is the fourth song on their next record “with the beatles”! anna (go to him) is john’s song :) great video, cannot wait to watch the rest of the album reactions! (cool banner in the back btw, i live right next to the u of m!)
Man, dude, that was a helluva good reaction. No one woulda guessed you were just in the hospital, with your vibe and zest you showed here. Sorry you WERE there, btw, glad ur back in one piece and hopefully healed up! Even some of us long-time listeners get their voices mixed up. I still have to focus sometimes to be sure of just which one I'm hearing! I don't know ALL their songs, and like the later better, but SO MANY GEMS of their early years await you! You really, literally have NO idea, lol! Meet The Beatles!
As someone else said, John sang "Anna"; he also sang "Baby, It's You". And George sang lead on "Chains", often joined by John and Paul in chorus. Also, Ringo does not play drums on "Love Me Do", he plays tambourine. Session drummer Andy White handles the skins.
I saw her standing there was Pauls incredible early hit song! The Beatles started off with a Banger! Twist and Shout ended the album with a bang and great three part harmonies!
New sub here! Your reaction to this album made me all happy and joyful. Thoroughly enjoyed this! You have an awesome speaking voice. Thanks for this video. The Beatles always blow me away.
Most of the Please Please Me songs were actually recorded live, their debut album is basically a bunch of singles in an album. bang on reaction though, it's always a blast seeing your honest reactions
The thing that made the Beatles stand out so much early on, leading to Beatle Mania, was just how good they were. There are many videos of them playing live early in their career and they never, ever once miss a beat. They sound just as good live as they do on their albums. Even the songs that aren't as upbeat are still played & sung perfectly. Every time. Truly, they deserve every single accolade they get. Peace.
The individual Beatles tracks are more of a later album thing (starts around Rubber Soul / Revolver) in most of the early songs John and Paul used to sing together.

Love your energy for the Beatles. That's George singing "Do You Want To Know A Secret?"
Gotta realize, a lot of these songs are covers. Several originally done by American girl groups. That’s why Ringo is singing about boys for one.
Carole King wrote Chains and Isley Brothers did the original Twist and Shout.
Only 6 of them are covers which is not much for a debut album
@@419HLR ok
Feel better now?
im obsessed w their stuff and your reactions are sooo good. subbed and down to watch as many beatles reactions as you can do
Another awesome reaction! Love your channel Bro!
Anna is John singing
your reactions to the beatles is the best on youtube. you give so many great insights! keep up the great videos! cant wait bro
They progressed but the youth and joy in these early songs helped people who were not feeling great
George normally got two songs per album. On each album those two songs were always hits.
Anna Go to Him was sung by John Lennon. Might have sounded like George because this was recorded before John shredded his vocal chords recording Twist and Shout. He sang so hard he ended up spitting up blood and said his voice was never the same.
As usual, awesome reaction. Glad to hear you are feeling better.
Remember what you said about harmonica when you get to Led Zeppelin’s “When the Levee Breaks.”
Ha! Yup.
You're a good listener
There’s A Place
Great little song.
I didn't realize how many songs were covers from previous songs
This album had six cover songs on it . Chains, Anna, Boys, Baby it’s you, A taste of honey and Twist and shout. Of all of them, they really made Twist and shout their own.
So glad you're back and healthy 🙏
By the way, the version you're reacted is the 2009 Stereo version!
The Beatles were red hot from the start. I was only a little girl when this music was released, but I well remember the impact they made…think atomic bomb. They blew everything apart. It was glorious.
A lot of songs on their earlier albums, basically up to Beatles for Sale, are covers btw!
No covers on 'Hard Day's Night'
Emperor Darius, a powerful greeting from Australia. I was extremely sceptical at first as it is very difficult to run one past me at any given time. I looked and looked, but after seven of your videos , I was completely floored.
You are the only one that has ever picked up on the fact that the song, There's a Place, is an empirical song on that album. There isn't a band on earth today that could do it justice. It is just too difficult. You are nothing short of a genius, an like I say, it is very hard for someone like me to be fooled. We need people like you to set the RECORD straight. Love your work.
Glad to see you're better man, good to see you back. ✌🏻
DARIUS - don't forget - there's a whole shitload of Beatles singles that are NOT on any albums. You have to do Past Masters, Volumes One and Two. And those were HITS, and B-sides!
You are the best reaction person on you tube.. you got me cracking up👍
Yes
Can't wait to see your other Beatles reactions! Just turned notifications on.
So excited for all the Beatles album reactions! There’s literally something for everyone, The Beatles are unmatched! ❤
John brought home, covering Twist And Shout. Amazing vocals.
the anticipation, waiting for him to hit the last track of the album, 'Twist & Shout'. His eyes are gonna explode.
Love Me Do was their 1st single (in England). Please, Please Me was their 1st #1 single.
I love “Chains!” I sang it LOUD while swinging on the swingset at my elementary school!!! Love it!!!!!! 🥰 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
BEATLES FACT: This entire album was recorded in ten hours!
Except for the four previously released songs.
Good that you decided to start (over) from the beginning, with listening to the Beatles. Subscribed for the ride. Nice to see you discovering and enjoying.
love your reactions! they have just made my day.
It's Rock and Roll Baby
Thank you for the reaction! Great job. I've been listening to the Beatles for many years and it took me a while to differentiate between John and George's voices on many of this album's songs.
The Beatles were known as "The Masters of the Middle Eight"....for good reason...!!!
something important to remember! as far as i’m aware, the fourth track on all or most beatle records are george’s songs! chains is also a cover so don’t worry about that being george’s song lol, it’s not. his first song is the fourth song on their next record “with the beatles”! anna (go to him) is john’s song :) great video, cannot wait to watch the rest of the album reactions! (cool banner in the back btw, i live right next to the u of m!)
So funny how you mix up Anna and Chains with John and George 😂
Paul scream came from Little Richard.
Is there a better album opener than I Saw Her Standing There? It's been one of my favourites since I first heard it in 1963.
Anna and Baby it’s you are John
Peace.
McCartney has said he used Chuck Berry’s bassline from “I’m Talking About You” for “I Saw Her Standing There”.
The individual Beatles tracks are more of a later album thing (starts around Rubber Soul / Revolver) in most of the early songs John and Paul used to sing together.
