Well done, it would have been more enjoyable to escape from the actual Alcatraz than to play through this game.

Alcatraz for the Commodore 64 is a hidden gem that offers a thrilling prison escape experience like no other! This action-packed game will keep you engaged from the moment you start plotting your escape.
The graphics are impressive for a C64 title, especially considering the outdoor setting. The stark, forbidding island prison is rendered with surprising detail, from the imposing walls to the treacherous rocky shores. Character sprites, while simple, are clear and functional, allowing you to easily distinguish between prisoners and guards.
The gameplay is where Alcatraz truly shines. As you guide your prisoner through the outdoor areas of the infamous prison, you'll need to use your wits and quick reflexes to avoid detection and
overcome obstacles. The game's focus on stealth and timing creates a tense atmosphere that perfectly captures the high-stakes nature of a prison break.
What's particularly noteworthy is how the game manages to create a suspenseful environment without relying on background music. The absence of a soundtrack actually heightens the tension, making every sound effect - from footsteps to alarms - all the more impactful. This minimalist audio approach immerses you in the precarious situation of an escaping prisoner, where every noise could mean discovery.
With its challenging gameplay and multiple escape routes to discover, Alcatraz offers solid replay value. You'll find yourself returning to the game, determined to find the most efficient path to freedom.
In conclusion, Alcatraz may not be the most technically advanced game on the C64, but it's a well-crafted, engaging experience that makes excellent use of the system's capabilities. For fans of stealth games or anyone looking for a unique C64 title, Alcatraz is definitely worth your time. It's a testament to how clever design can create a memorable gaming experience even within the constraints of 8-bit hardware.
    8/10

How did they ever expect someone to play this without save states? I don’t mind a challenge but I hate it when programmers specifically make a game impossible for the player just to feel superior.

There is way too much of that from what I've dug up. Gameplay totally out of balance.
