My mom’s grandmother (her father’s mother) was Seminole, I wish I would have been raised learning that part of my culture. All we have is their house and pictures to show for it. Only my eldest aunt (who passed a few years ago) spoke the native language. She and her two sisters lived a mostly traditional Native American lifestyle as well. All they ever taught me was how to make a brick “oven” in a pit outside 😩😂🤦🏾‍♀️. I’m determined to learn everything though!

I am Seminole by my mothers blood in creek tradition that is enough, she was adopted by whites off of a reservation near Pahokee county Florida. I was adopted at birth, nothing would make me happier than to be able to rekindle my connection to my ancestral ties! I hope my studies might highlight a way home as I have a deep desire to protect what positive culture can still be protected. I have no anger over the fate of us Seminole but we must remember and rebuild, the thought of all of our fight being for nothing? The possibility of living without ancestral purpose? Horrifying! I hope everyone looks into their family and reconnects in this age of dopamine and screens!

Just listening to this, you can feel the power of the blood of the Seminoles and the voices that have gone before this young man! I am deeply moved to watch this video. I am a native of Tampa and the Seminole smoke shop was literally walking distance from my front door. Walking just a few blocks from my house you'd be outside the neighborhood and maybe 500 ft up was the Seminole and which eventually had the hard Rock casino. I believe the smoke shop has closed of course I haven't lived in that neighborhood since I was a teenager but I don't remember anyone stopping at Seminole Indians or having any issue at all with them benefiting or having businesses in the area I think everybody was kind of proud of the fact that they were doing that. I feel blessed that I grew up in such a culturally diverse part of the country. My whole life I had friends from almost every state in the United States and people from other countries. Tampa had everything that any big-city had but we also had more of a quaint neighborly feel in comparison to some place like New York City.

He had several children, more than one wife, and over time that results in so many lines of distant relatives. None of us can find each, none of us look alike. Seminole history begins with bands of Creek Indians from Georgia and Alabama who migrated to Florida in the 1700s. Conflicts with Europeans and other tribes caused them to seek new lands to live in peace. Groups of Lower Creeks moved to Florida to get away from the dominance of Upper Creeks. They were not allowed time to gather their belongings, and as they left, whites looted their homes. Then began the march known as the Trail of Tears, in which 4,000 Cherokee people died of cold, hunger, and disease on their way to the western lands. Something is not being told here about who was really here first before the Seminole ran from Georgia and Alabama to enter fl. check this out: Lost History: Rediscovering the Taíno People (Short Documentary)

My grandfather is Seminole. I am trying to research our family but there are so many parts of the story that died with him and his brother and sister. It's a shame to have lost our personal history but I am learning everything I can about the tribe's history and teach it to my children.

Misty Wiess I’m sorry to tell you that you won’t get too much. The Tribe has a clan system that is passed down through the mother’s side. You must have a clan to participate in ceremonies. A lot of the traditional culture is taught a very young age. You can learn about the history of the Tribe, but culturally you will hit a wall.

Timucua were a different tribe. Their society collapsed after being decimated by European diseases. The Timucua that survived assimilated into the Seminole, who moved in from the North, and their pre-existing culture was lost.

David M. The same syllabic script was used for all the Native languages, as far as I can tell. We are Cree, and my husband's father could read the Inuit language because they used the same syllabics for Inuit too. He had no idea what any of the words meant, but he could read them because he could read Cree! Lol! He couldn't read English though because it used English alphabet which he didn't know.
