@@jschroeman Generation of microplastics is a mechanical process, not a chemical one. They won’t ‘leech’, but by generating smaller fragments they are then going to degrade faster. While all plastic will degrade eventually, the intact plastic bucket is going to shed far less microplastic particles than those fine shreds over the lifetime of the bucket.

What a brilliantly simple idea! I've left it too late for beans this year, I think, but next year definitely. We usually plant things like that in my partner's garden but the badgers dig everything up and destroy it so we only put in potatoes this - and they dug up a quarter of those overnight as soon as the tops showed through.

There's a spray you can use called CritterRidder that works. If you have a Home Depot or maybe Lowes or maybe some small hardware stores, or a Tractor Supply store, you should be able to find it. It has fox urine which scares small wildlife, cats, rabbits, skunks, armadillos, chipmunks, birds, squirrels, foxes, deer, spray lasts for 30 days, then replay, made by Havahart. Works for me.

You don't have to drill those 4 holes and 4 shorter canes actually, you can use large binder clips and tie the long canes where the binder clips are. That way you don't have to damage the bucket. If you think drill holes better, you can tie the ring of twist tie or a piece of wire to secure the long canes.

    • @beverlycharles6534

Plastic decomposes faster than we thought when out in the heat of summer and cold of winter. I collect rainwater for my veggie garden and drain it into empty plastic gallon containers, they lasted only 2 years, but when they start to crack i put them into the recycling bin. I try to re-use all the plastic containers from the grocery store in every way possible, I try to buy more things in glass containers whenever possible - better to recycle. Save the planet, it all matters.pass it on.

there is an additional value here.... turn the soil in a garden patch after use along with the greens left after pivcking all the beans.... whats left in the soil is a nitrogen fixer and does wonders for rebuilding soil.
