Stalag 17 is a classic! I am only 16 and this is one of my favorite movies ever! The great escape was great but I like this movie alot more. William Holden brought so much to this movie! Some of my friends say its gay to like black and white movies but I dont care this movie is just too great! Oh and ANIMAL RULES!!!
I ran across this movie when i was between 12 n 15 in the 90s. And loved it was a big ww2 movie buff so any time this was on i would watch it. I was strolling thur Walmart one day 15yrs ago and saw this on dvd and bought it on the spot. Your friends are dumb lots of good movies and tv shows that where black n white.
when i was young me and my family would go for summer vacation and we would not pay for cable tv but we would always take the vcr and this movie was one of them, i grew up watching this movie and i love it
Excellent scene. As they all join in and sing an very old American song the spy is revealed to the audience and he has the gall to join in like a good patriotic American boy. It makes you despise him even more. Peter Graves gives a very good performance as the spy. So good it actually hampered his career.
@@AA-sn9lz Yes, He did 3 or 4 movies a year for a while. A lot of B movies and some really low budget. Western and Sci-fi. Starring in some of them. He also did the TV show Fury for 5 years.
Price is a German spy put in the American POW barracks, he is passing messages to the German guards through a hallow chess piece, he ties a loop in the light wire to alert the guards that there is a new message. The guy laying in bed just got beat by the other men because they thought he was the spy. When I was a kid Stalag 17 was my Dad's favorite movie, when it came out on VHS he'd watch it all the time. It really is one of the best all-time movies ever made.
Absolutely. I just love the steely coldness and minimal movement of Peter Graves (Price) while he reveals the real treachery going on in the barracks. The timing of the cord pull down, Joey's slow turn to look at him after the crowd marches by is like: "What did you just do Price?" and Holden's (Sefton) notice of the now swinging shadow to the backdrop of the rallying music is so wonderful and quintessential Billy Wilder!
I had no impression Joey spotted anything, Price does make sure Sefton is not looking before he checks the hollow chess queen. That Sefton notices something about the light cord is clearly telegraphed, however.
@@stevekaczynski3793 It's not so much Joey actually suspects anything or saw anything - because he didn't. It's more the (artistic?) choice of having the disassociated, cognitively-challenged guy be the one to look at Price after the audience is made aware that he is now the bad guy while the other POWs are blissfully unaware and reveling. It struck me as a nice subtle choice in the whole framing of the "reveal" scene. Thanks for your insightful comment! :)
@@stevekaczynski3793 what does it mean, "clearly telegraphed"? You mean, for the sake of plot? I don't think so. I think it was completely in character with Sefton. From thw beginning, he knew something was wrong, and was more wise to it than the rest of the sergeants. Then when they suspected him and even beat him up, his vigilance only strengthened.
One of Billy Wilder's best works if not his best... Double Indemnity, Sunset Boulevard, Some Like It Hot, The Apartment and this one right here are surely his best movies :)
Ever since I first saw this scene, this has been my favorite rendition of Johnny Goes Marching Home. And this scene is well done. So much is going on while the P.O.W.'s still finding ways to lift their spirits; it just gets to me.

Stalag 17 along with High Noon were my dad's two favorite movies. They are both timeless classics. The only black and white movies I could ever stand as a kid, it brings back some happy memories.
Both Stalag 17 and Guns of Navarone were great WWII films but dont foget my favorite WWII film, The Longest Day. That one had a catchy tune too. Got to love B&W films.
I've said this before but it bears repeating. Peter Graves does a STELLAR acting job in this scene. Just enough, no dialogue and we really get it. Really cool collected job in an awesome film! Look how he follws them back to the table and matter of factly and dilliberately yanks the cord out if the loop. Great
Just because he wasn't doing much to help the men in Barracks 4 doesn't mean he wasn't watching for anything out of the ordinary. He knew something screwy was going on since the start of the movie like all the other men, they just weren't as focused like he was because the Germans kept out witting them with the spy. And this is where he picks up the scent (The light) and became more suspicious when he saw the loop again later in the evening.
It's not so much the swinging - it's the fact it's been lowered. Any of the POW's could have have knocked it with a mop to make it swing, but it's the change in the cord's length that's the real clue.
Je viens de le découvrir. Je l'ai regardé trois fois en l'espace de quelques jours ❤. Un grand merci à ARTE pour l'avoir diffusé. Il est magnifique. Une très belle histoire.👍
