Your Samphrey is beautiful and it works so well with that skirt (dress?) that you're wearing 😍 Such a shame about the cardigan, but it's great that you can still repurpose the squares! I think they would be great as gift bags!

I made the Ariana Cardigan out of wool yarn. It was sooo heavy! My friend made hers from acrylic and it was a bit lighter but crochet will always be heavier than the knitted garments we are used to. Grad you had a backup plan for the granny squares. Smart lady!
Congratulations on finishing the Samphrey. It is so beautiful on you :-) I can not wait to see what your next colour work project will be. There is something about autumn that makes me crave complex colour work, but chistmas knitting is a hard competitor.
Thank-you sweet Inger 🥰 And I agree, although I knit all year round, there's something especially inviting about Autumn's crisp cool air and gorgeous colours that makes me want to cast on ALL the things 🤗 Hope you are doing well 💕
Hi Nikki!! It was so grewt to sit and knit with you this Sunday morning. Your samphrey is absolutely amazing and stunning!! 🤩 and loved all your wips. Even your daughters cardi. Lol please use those beautiful squares from it in something else. They are just too cute!! 🥰 ❤ take care and looking forward to your next episode! ❤
Thanks so much Sophie 🥰 And yes, those squares are definitely getting repurposed into bags. Thanks for spending some time with me and hope you had a lovely weekend 💕
Hi Nikki! I've been obsessed with making speckles with natural dyes and I think I've cracked the code :D I soak the yarn for a few hours, squeeze most of the water out, lay the skein flat and then randomly spread the dye over the yarn. Then I rolled up the skein very tightly, tied it up with some yarn and put it into my strainer which was resting over a pan of simmering water. I closed the lif and let the yarn steam for several hours. The results are super cool! Now, the dye in this case is actually the natural materials: I've tried with various berries and I've tried with different flowers. Some flowers give off the color so generously that the result is really impressive. The experiment with different berries was... Erm, let's say I'll never do it again :D Getting that berry mush out of wool is the biggest headache.
Thanks so much for sharing! I will have to give it another go 🤗 Also, I swear I haven't forgotten about your fibre, I've had 2 unlucky attempts at mailing it but will be sure to get it in the mail to you this weekend. So sorry for the delay 💕
@@KnittingWithCatHair oh no Nikki, I wasn't even questioning it! Especially given everything that's happened to you & your family recently ❤🩹❤🩹 As for the dying... Hi Nikki love your Samphrey ❤ looks amazing on you. Seeing your work is inspiring. I haven’t knit fairisle in a while - definitely need to explore my Marie Wallin books.
Hi Nikki! I loved your podcast! Your Samphrey is stunning. I love colour-work so much but am just feeling like easy knits right now. So I will live vicariously through you for a bit and hopefully be up to a Marie Wallin sweater some day. 😀 Elizabeth (also Canadian, from Ottawa)
Hello and Welcome Elizabeth! Always lovely to meet a fellow Canadian knitter 🤗 Thank-you for your kind words 🥰 And I absolutely understand the need to alternate between simple and more complex pieces. Happy Making 💕
Your Samphrey sweater turned out so pretty. Thank you for the tip on going down in needle size after the bottom ribbing. I will make a note of it in the book. I plan on knitting the Samphrey in 2024. The Shetland book is a great investment. So many beautiful patterns. I've knitted the Bressay, and on my 2nd garment (Yell cardigan)
Thanks so much! And I agree, the Shetland book is just full of gorgeous designs! I have plans to make both the Bressay and Yell as well. I'm sure you'll love your Samphrey 🤗
Hurray! Always so glad to see another episode up and running from you Nikki. Your projects are always so beautiful. I can relate for the need to do colour work. I always have a project on the go that involves this technique. Love your Samphrey!
love your use of needle sizes to adjust size! also, love your samphrey colors... don't be afraid to steek! it's only horrifying the 1st time 🙂. how about trying it on J Beale's Badger? it has colorwork! 🙂
Thank-you 🥰 And yes, I just have to get some planned garment steeking out of the way so I understand the concepts and can employ the technique to future mods 🤗
Your sweater is gorgeous. You did a great job. I’m disappointed in all the Marie Wallin garments because they aren’t designed well for proper fit. The stitch designs and colorwork are her strengths.
I have to say I agree with you, even though she’s currently my favorite designer. I’m working the Birch pullover and I have to completely rewrite the yoke because of the ill fit that’s documented through all the projects. 😕
Thanks so much Edina 🥰 Yes, there do seem to be quite a few issues with the fit of Marie's patterns. Definitely have to do research ahead of making them.
@@KnittingWithCatHair She isnt the only designer that I have found this kind of issue with. At first, I thought I was just too picky because I sew my own wardrobe and am acutely aware of fit but I soon realized, Im particular, not picky. Your Samphrey is so pretty on you...and when you held up your striped cardigan it was easy to see a colour theme going on...they look really nice on the screen together. I'm a bit intimidated at the thought of my Jennifer Beale project....I figured I'd begin in November, but maybe I should cast on this week to get over my nervousness 😊
Thanks so much Sandra 🥰 I've been told to just trust the process with Jennifer's designs and follow the instructions and everything will work out. You've got this!!
Your sweater is fabulous and looks amazing on you! It is the perfect fit and I love the colours. That’s too bad about your Thanksgiving weekend 😢 It seems like there are a lot of people sick right now. I caught something three weeks ago and still have some lagging symptoms. Stay cozy and have a good week, Nikki! ❤
This was my method for naturally dyed speckled yarn: mix water, dye powder, and guar gum in a squirt bottle (guar gum is important to keep it from moving around), squirt erratically on mordanted yarn, wrap yarn in plastic wrap, microwave in plastic wrap for five minutes three times. It isn’t as fine as chemical dye speckles, but it worked OK. :) Was really lovely on mohair especially.
Hello beautiful Nikki❤. Your Samphery is absolutely magically beautiful🤩😍. You have really done a fantastic job🥳. But that thing with the sleeves is something that I also thought a lot about both when I was working on the daffodil and the Yell cardigan. I don't know but a lot of times it feels like sleeves are something a lot of designers forget to spend more time on. Many times the sleeves become gigantic if you knit a slightly larger size😅. Your partner's sweater will turn out so nice😍, but it's dangerous with long projects, I've noticed😅. I just finished my husband's gib 2 and here it is the opposite he has in these 7-8 months it has been on the needles he has lost a lot of weight so it is as big as a tent on him now🤣🤣🙈. It is so nice to hear that you are not alone with fussy children😅. That's why most of what I knit is for Alva, because as long as it's pink, it works. But for David and Tuva it's been years since I knitted anything more than mittens and socks, for Victory it's more a question of which yarn and pattern he is so sensitive to certain structures❤. As usual, your episodes are absolutely wonderful.❤❤
Thank-you sweet Emilia 🥰 Yes sleeves are certainly tricky! And letting projects sit sometimes create such challenges 😂 That's why my next garment for John will be an oversized cardigan 🤞 Thanks for spending some time with me and I look forward to catching up on your vlogtober 🤗💕

Thank-you so much Katja 🥰 Ariana is a lovely pattern and I also fell in love with it after watching Sarah's podcast 🤗 I'm sure yours will work out just fine 💕
Natural dyes can take a lot of extended time + heat to fully release their color. My recommendation would be to not use the microwave. Try the oven. You can still use a casserole dish, and you won't need to move the yarn. Put a lid or tin foil over the dish to keep the moisture in. I haven't tried this but I'm guessing there's a better chance of success due to removing some negative factors.
I have the yarn for Jennifer Beale's Joe Batt's Arm pattern, but I keep doing less intimidating projects. I am nearly done with my first Marie Wallin, so after that I will be ready to start a more complicated design. Your sweater is a triumph, and blocking will make it loosen up a bit, I predict.
