As a biologist, I find this fascinating. This chimp is checking her eye lashes for lice, her nostrils for worms (check out "turning sickness" in apes). He's checking her skin (especially the folds) for staph infections. Smelled her mouth for gingivitis (indicator of tooth decay). Checked the sclera of her eyes (jaundice is a sign of malnutrition). Checked her nails for fungi. To me, this seems very intentional and borders on medical.

The way he smells you to check your bacteria is remarkable. This was like a doctor visit. And he knows that he has to be more gentle with you than another chimp. Absolutely incredible.
Well its not surprising, given how our early ancestors began to use tools. Early bipedal primates (when the ancestors of other primates and humans separated and there started to be tall chimp-like creatures that had similar body proportions to that of modern humans) have been found to have had broken rocks for sharp edges, as a means of weapon and to break animal bones for nutrient dense bone marrow. Chimps are very proficient in tool usage and even planning and strategising. When hunting monkeys, chimps tend to initiate different groups to lead the prey into an area where it can only go in one direction, where a separate chimp is there to catch it. They use plant stems or sticks to fish for ants and termites as well. Its the closest thing we have tobeing able to go back in time and watch early hominids develop tool usage. Who knows, maybe at some point chimps will discover how to utilise fire and enter a new age of advancement.@@tobifalola8483
Anyone else laugh when he started checking up her nose 🤭 Admittedly I was nervous watching him touch her eyes but it seemed very intentional! He was careful and that was so cool to watch.
Keep in mind chimps are known for attacking and killing humans it's not unheard of and there are documented cases of it. We look at this video and think "Oh that's cute" and make jokes about how the chimp is a great doctor. However, at the end of the day, this is a wild animal that can easily kill this woman if it wants to.
@goofyindividual-pl1bd It’s both. They are extremely sensitive, communicative, and intelligent. But they are also like war societies and hunt other tribes and establish dominance within their own by fighting and showing threat displays. Some say they are even entering their Stone Age. We as a people are still violent and the fact we are so close really shows us where we get it.

Its so touching how careful and with endurance and patience he does it. He even looked up to her when scratching her toe nail to see it it hurts or not. These creatures are way more intelligent and compassionate than i thought And i feel so sorry for them living in captivity
As a doctor i might then say that both the speed of examination and thought process is quite similar to those examinations i've seen given by RNs. (jk, i love RNs)
The thing that gets me the most is the way he gently brushes her hair out of the way. It's so subtle, but blows my mind how human like it is. This is really beautiful and fascinating.
It;s amazing. And I also find it quite fascinating that we humans and chimps descend from the same ancestor which lived around 6 or 7 million years ago. In other words, we have the same distant great grandmother and grandfather ("great" times several million generations)! So these two animals in the video are just very distant relatives.
@@davidkosiba624 Humans and chimps share around 97% DNA, give or take a few percent. So we know for a fact that we're very closely related to chimps. And to your first point, I do agree that we could call other mammals distant relatives but they aren't as close. To put it in perspective, a small rat-like creature which lived about 145 million years ago is the earliest Eutherian mammal discovered so far. It is thought to be the distant relative of all placental mammals, ranging from blue whales, shrews to humans. So while we are related to that rat-like creature, and we could say that our distant relatives scurried around like rats, the timescale of 145 million years is quite vast. So we're much more closely related to chimps because only 6 to 7 million years ago is when we split from the common ancestor on that branch of the evolutionary tree.

They are pound for pound 1,35-1,5 times stronger than humans. So not incredibly strong, but strong. Many animals are way stronger both pound for pound and in absolute strength, like leopards and lions.
i think they are probably stronger than that, but defining strength between your average wolf or lion compared to a chimpanzee and human probab;y requires more specification the density and strength of their tendons and muscle fibers are significant, alot of people say a light slap by even a baby primate feels like getting hit by an adult, i even saw a video of a monkey dragging some kid around like a sack of potatoes@@FBugle

I still can’t get over this video, even years later. For me, chimps are scary and insanely intelligent. I could never muster up the courage to be close to one, so congrats to this lady for having this kind of bond and relationship with chimps. It’s remarkable
It's fascinating watching him analyze another species other than himself. I wonder what he's thinking when he sees certain differences. I imagine he's like 'I can't tell if that's supposed to be there or not but I'll check anyway.' He was checking so much that I wondered if he had a little bit of an obsessive (and caring) personality or if it's just relaxing for him and he likes to spend as much time bonding like this as possible. He looks so happy to do this :) very sweet.
Or if maybe he was curious about the differences in their physiology. He's like, "I was just going to check for cavities, but I can't stop looking at your tiny teeth..."
Not sure he notices that much. Seems clear he sees her as merely another species of hairless chimpanzee which tbh isn’t too inaccurate and is more or less on point. The fact that there are hairless chimpanzees only reinforces this image.
They do it for fun and bonding in the wild. They look for parasites or fungus or loose skin or whatever that they can pick off and try to clean. Honestly it's a shame we stopped doing this stuff ourselves and only go to a paid spa rarely.
It's a natural behavior in primates, grooming is not only a form of hygiene but also a way for them to bond with others. Chimps for example will groom another to either help calm them, as a sign of forgiveness or to try and make friends with them. Friends in a chimp group is important as it means you often will have back up if another chimp in your group gets out of hand with you, even if said other chimp is the alpha. Saw on a episode of monkey life where the alpha of a group they were introducing two new Chimps into kept getting brutal with one of the two new Chimps. So they had him spend time with just the others in the group without the alpha around and let him form bonds with the others by grooming and such. Sure enough when they brought the alpha back in and he got out of hand again the rest of the troop now excepting the new guy protected him and the alpha realized that he was outnumbered went off to cool off and think and eventually accepted the new chimp.
Doctors don’t even know what they are doing biologists know way more about health than any doctors I’ve known. But this guy know exactly what he is doing and searching for. @@fazeext9777 do you actually think this chimp cant tell that she's a human? Even your goldfish knows you're a different superior species hence why they come to the surface and beg for food!
With what I know about apes, this was just fascinating to watch for a couple reasons. For starters, grooming in apes like chimpanzees is how troops keep strong bonds with one another - they check each other for stuff like parasites and even medical issues, and it is a calming experience for both parties involved. To see this chimp do that with a zookeeper, you just know that they're bond is really something to behold. Second, this was just calming to watch... like ASMR. The chimp is so meticulous and careful, it's calming just to watch it do this.
He uses his fingers and fingernails with such caution and precision to the point it reveals their capability for empathy, at least on a physical scale. You can tell how much of an allotment of care and concentration he reserves for his brain by looking at his eyes.
i think she might be doing that to imitate the expressions a chimp would make since she can't smile or maybe hold direct eye contact with him for too long safely--smiling is like a challenge to chimps,I've heard.
I was scrolling through people's comments talking about how relaxing this looks when I realized something. I mean, why *do* we feel relaxed when we get a massage, or during grooming videos like this one? Perhaps it's a leftover reaction from our primate ancestors grooming each other to stay healthy thousands and thousands of years ago
Very much so. We likely evolved these kinds of autonomous responses because checking eachother for medical issues is a very useful behaviour for a social species to have but it helps if there is an incentive for doing so.
Probably part of why people are so stressed now too, so few do anything like this, whether paying for it (as a massage) or with their own family or partners
We evolved from the same ancestor, but our knowledge of medicine & healthcare took different approaches. Where we came to rely on technology & chemistry, apes learned to rely on their instincts & highly developed senses. Seeing how gently he handles her & carefully checks her for illness/injury shows his intelligence & empathy.

As a massage therapist and nurse assistant, I find this amazing. I just watched a video of a small monkey grooming its human family members, and the differences in how it and this chimp performed grooming are amazing. The small monkey seemed to be mostly about examining mostly the scalp but also facial and forearm hair for bugs. The actions of the chimp in this video are closer to a medical examination than a grooming. The chimp is trying to learn and perhaps even bond, and is very thorough in its examination. I thought it was funny when it looked down the lady's shirt like, "Hm...bit different than ours. Next!"
This is just how chimps bond with each other. Grooming is a sign of trust and friendship. Sort of like chatting with a friend, chimps groom each other as a way of showing respect and keeping clean.

There's just something relaxing about the idea of being groomed and looked at, like how back scratches feel good. Also, I wouldn't trust chimps OR pitbulls near a child or anyone I love. Both are incredibly unstable, but pitbulls essentially have psychopathy and bloodthirst. Pitbulls are a whole other animal. Have you seen the video from years ago of a pitbull lunging and attacking a large carriage horse? You can find it easily on TH-cam with those search terms. The video is a great example of why these dogs are so dangerous. It’s literally getting kicked by a probably 1800-2000lb animal. An animal that a single wolf alone cannot bring down. This act is not based in any survival. It’s a fat dog, not hungry. Attacking alone. This is not natural at all. The dog does not have the sense to determine when the fight is futile. All sense has been bred out and replaced with a reckless abandonment level prey drive. That is a very dangerous mental state for any animal to be in. If a 2,000 lb horse can’t get it off, what makes a 180lb man think he can stop it? The human ego will keep us in the dark for eternity, especially if think you'd keep pits around children under any circumstance. Even if you only mean that as an example.

@60sbabydoll777 that's not at all what we fight about but if that's how you want to rationalize it then ok. Chimps kill eachother just for being in different clans all the time. Chimps and other animals are much more violent and brutal than humans are to eachother.

So while we are related to that rat-like creature, and we could say that our distant relatives scurried around like rats, the timescale of 145 million years is quite vast. i think they are probably stronger than that, but defining strength between your average wolf or lion compared to a chimpanzee and human probab;y requires more specification the density and strength of their tendons and muscle fibers are significant, alot of people say a light slap by even a baby primate feels like getting hit by an adult, i even saw a video of a monkey dragging some kid around like a sack of potatoes@@FBugle

Lol i relate
I'm amazed at how gently it examined you. It's truly fascinating to watch this behavior. Great video.

To see this chimp do that with a zookeeper, you just know that they're bond is really something to behold.

@cecilyerker true! But it's not so much for social connections anymore, it's more out of necessity and convenience
I do not know how this ended up in my FYP. I only stayed on because it's so fascinating. But, I have to say that these two must really love each other to go through all of this.
It’s so humanlike I felt like it could slip gloves off an have human hands. But also alien at the same time. The patience and trust this woman has is amazing and almost unbelievable.
I mean, look at a chimpanzee's hand up close. It's almost indistinguishable from a human hand already.

That's how they keep their kind alive its instinct those things probably cause a lot of them to get sick or die.
There's definitely got to be some deep instinctual reaction we still have for this because it's just so damn relaxing.
For real
speak for yourself im terrified.. no offense but id have MANY pitbulls around my child before 1 chimp i almost hope theres someone in the background with a gun for her safety honestly, these things deserve a good life and kindness but should not be interacted with
@@girlysoap9031 I wouldn't trust chimpanzees near me or anyone I love either. I think you're mistaken because no one is saying they want to actually be near a chimpanzee.
@@TheCatnipCinema definitely just an example! i was thinking of "tame" pit vs "tame" chimp too.. and i appreciate the explanation, i didnt realise pits were quite so unstable i used to think they were kinda cute till i learnt some things a while ago.. pitbull defenders are ridiculous to me also
@@girlysoap9031 I agree completely with you. Glad we cleared that up.
This video is a pleasure to watch for many reasons. In addition to showing how gentle and thorough the chimpanzee was with their inspection of the human, it shows us some ways that humans might learn to develop grooming skills and form deeper connections with chimpanzees in our care. Even an abbreviated version of this might be good for the mental health of a captive chimpanzee.
HE IS SO SWEET!
Extremely attentive!
More caring then half of humans will ever be!

Except for that one woman who got her face ripped off by a chimp

The obvious care and love and gentleness is so apparent. Beautiful
Grooming is as much a social connection as it is about cleanliness. The chimp lady is such a beautiful soul, I'm impressed this human lady has such a close bond
Wow that woman is really brave and patient. Also, how did she not crack up during the nose exams?
Prbly didn't want to get her face ripped off.
Smiling and making sudden noise would be like squaring up to them. Jane Goodall said it was hard not to smile when working with chimps because she wanted to stay friends with them

@@manda_bear97 "In most primates, eye contact is an implicit signal of threat" found on google
@@manda_bear97 chimps can get aggressive from eye contact and we seen what they can do
Chimps and other primates consider direct eye contact to be a sign of dominance. If she stared at him it’s possible he could become agitated (and attack in a worst case scenario)
@@prickly_procyonids according to what i have seen with nuemrous amount of street dogs i have been with (india specially the part where i live have lots of street dogs), eye contact could mean two things 1) affection, 2) aggression
depending upon personality of each dog you meet and how your relationship is with the dogs,
some of them are kind of extrovert and playful they wouldn't mind eye contact mostly pups and sometimes female dogs but some (mostly adult male) are kind of reserved with there emotion, they would refrain from eye contact and would move away there face if constatly try to make an eye contact or even run away as they accept us as dominant and don't want a beef

yeah, and monkey is great too
I think the most impressive thing is how they’re able to ignore the differences between humans and chimps, and just focus on the similarities. They don’t seem bothered by the clothes, the lack of fur, the different feet, etc.

@@60sbabydoll777You think chimpanzees don't wipe out other chimpanzees from different groups in the wild?
@60sbabydoll777 that's not at all what we fight about but if that's how you want to rationalize it then ok. Chimps kill eachother just for being in different clans all the time. Chimps and other animals are much more violent and brutal than humans are to eachother.

The intensity and precision. Although not in any particular order, it was truly intelligently led from the use of finger nails to groom, to the really close eye contact.

Better go to a hospital
and yet they can rip your face off if they want to
You can tell just how sweet he is with you! He really does see you as family. It’s such a cool sight to see that one of our closest relatives can love us this unconditionally.
It’s times like this chimpanzee movements move back and forth through the uncanny valley for me, but in a good way. The dexterity of those fingers moving so much like a human’s. The quiet concentration while doing such tiny tasks. Those humanoid eyes flicking just like hers. It gives me giddy chills over how similar we are and I marvel that some people would deny we are related. Beautiful interaction ❤
That’s what struck me too, how can anyone deny, or find it absurd to believe we evolved from these haha. The chimp even knows what are all the features are - eyes, nose, mouth - and how to inspect them because they’re essentially the same haha
@@thomasfowler8212 that's a myth we did not evolve from monkeys and it's stupid to think that
@@thomasfowler8212it’s because for so long we’ve used a comparison with animals and primary monkeys and chimps as tool to criticize and demoralize another persons human status in order to justify acts of cruelty to other groups of people. So now when we make this clear observation that perhaps we aren’t so different after all, people take it as an ultimate offense. But who can blame them when we used chimps for product testing, research, experimentation, entertainment and keep them in cages all because they aren’t quite human but human enough to be used for testing out new medicine.
@@thomasfowler8212 we didn’t evolve from chimps. We share a common ancestor. But I get what you mean.

Nothing weird about it. Why do you think you have that ancestral urge in the first place? We’re pack hunters man. We need community and we need physical attention from others
Not weird, everyone wants personal attention. Look at what happens when you isolate humans, they literally get depressed and go insane.
