- Cement Pottery Time!!
I decide to have a go at creating my largest Bonsai pot to date!! But Experimenting with a Quick way using junk.
I have made use as I always like to;
Using an old basket for the mould.
Pipe cut up for drainage holes.
Left over sand & cement.
Stay tuned to see how the pot turned out…!!

A great job making this pot with character. Nice old style rustic design on it with the use of the basket and the plastic. Now for the tree.

Thanks for sharing this tip on creating a pot. The good thing about this is each and every pot is different and unique. Makes a change from the mass produced blue bonsai pots that you seem to see everywhere.

Sam that's very clever. I do a similar thing to make troughs using tufa rock. But mine are nothing as refined as yours. Very impressive.

Any issues with frost/cracking in winter? Im in zone 5b usa so not sure how these would do...
That plastic wrinkle really adds a great effect!

That’s great you found my channel thanks for stopping by and the Sub! Same reasons I started making my own also I like arty one offs :D I maybe out on my geography but if you have it warm over there try make the pots as thick as size and design will allow and experiment with aggregates. The 32c sun cracked a few of my pots. Just something to bare in mind.

That's a great self made pot Sam ! It might be ignorant of me (I know nothing of making pots) but do you have to add something to the mix of sand and cement to make the pot frost resistant ?
Concrete should be pretty frost resistant anyway. You can get concrete hardneres which are painted on and absorbed, but they don't necessarily increase frost resistance. What you do need to do though is soak the pot for a week or so afterwards to flush out any chems that my hurt your trees.

Thank you, Not bad for junk and a little time! The frost resistance will naturally be there once the cements chemical reaction has taken place and fully cured off. You get additives to add in if you building in low temperatures ie laying bricks and pouring concrete. What does help is curing your pot off very slowly. After cure and a good clean and sealed up no harm to plants. Garden canters have been selling cement planters for years :)

are those pots safe for trees?
Yes I believe so! I have various plants in pots I’ve made no issues! Cement has been fully cured and sealed up. Also garden centres have sold concrete pots for years :)

Yes great tip can be very helpful in some situations. However no amount of hot water will unstick bricks wrapped in clingfilm, a bit of a schoolboy error 😆 Thanks for stopping by!
