    Here in Central New York the community is mostly 40K & AoS. I was out of the scene for about 10 years since Warhammer Fantasy got destroyed. When I started coming to my local hobby store there was like 20 people that would come play 40k & AoS. Since that time I’ve noticed that those groups have actually shrunk down exponentially and the Old World group has grown from Two players to about 10 regulars sometimes we get more. I think people just relate to Warhammer Fantasy more than the other games. Our Old World club gains new players every month. The key to building up your hobby group is Consistency, hospitality, and availability. The desire for people is mostly already there. EVERYONE has at one time dreamed of being on a Fantasy battlefield lined up in formations and awaiting the charge of the enemy ranks. We grew up with these movies, LoTR, Kingdom of Heaven, Willow, Excalibur, and so many others. There’s just something about Old World that resonates with people. Not only the setting but in my honest opinion looks better on the table than 40K & AoS to outside parties who are just stopping in the hobby store and dont play miniaturewar games. It’s been quite a ride. Glad you guys are doing well..

    I finally got an army ready and enjoyed my first tournament last weekend. I miss having magic being more resource constrained but I like the army list variants, the new combat results like fall back in good order and give ground, and having mercenaries back. The tourney organizer did a great job adding secondary objectives to the tournament which gave me something to achieve when I was outmatched, such as I was in the second game when I faced a WoC army with 3 dragons.

    Old World is the only thing I am buying from GW now, the Battalion boxes are honestly great value for what you get.
    I can't remember the last time I have been excited for any GW product, and Old World has kicked off love for playing Mordheim locally.
    Edit. And to your point on the old kits, forgot how much fun these old kits are to build. I didn't look at or need the instructions for anything besides the chariots in my new Warriors of Chaos army since a lot of these old kits aren't drowning in details or individual parts.

    • @scepteredisle
      @scepteredisle 3 วันที่ผ่านมา +8

      "the Battalion boxes are honestly great value for what you get"
      I don't understand what you mean. Other than the Chaos Battalion, the rest are selling you old tat for still premium prices. What possibly makes you think selling you models from 1999 is somehow acceptable at these prices?
      This is why the game was dead on arrival. I see Old World stuff on extreme discount now all the time. They priced the stuff too high, and no one can afford it.

    • @johnb.2107

      @@scepteredisle $157.25 from my local retailer for the Warriors of Chaos Battalion box comes out to $3.57 USD per mini, and it gives you almost an entire 2,000 points army.
      The Orcs & Goblins one for that same price comes out to $2.15 per mini.
      The Dwarf one comes to $2.38 per mini at that same price.
      Saying that they are selling these for premium prices is an incredible stretch by you, if not an absolutely false statement. Even at full MSRP the boxes of 10 cavalry are coming out to $6.25 per mini, and the boxes of 32 infantry coming out to $2.65 per mini.
      Show me where else in the GW catalog you can get that value, show me where in the hobby besides historicals you can get that many honestly decent (for the average painter) minis or make an army that cheap besides maybe Relic Blade or other micro skirmish games? Corvus Belli and other companies are charging $10-18 per miniature in their bundles and you say that Old World stuff is overpriced? Sure.

      @@johnb.2107 $3.57 USD per mini for ancient sculpts that are readily available in peoples attics and bulk army deals on ebay is not really a price to boast about. In this economy $157 for an army that you still will probably add more minis to, have to paint, assemble and buy new rulebooks for is kinda pushing the envelope for some. It's definitely put me off and I'd rather buy a box of frostgrave barbarians $1.45 USD per mini for the bulk warriors and 3d print the rest.

      @@scepteredisle In Pts/$, TOW is at least two times more valuable than every single 40K and AoS army (even Custodes and Grey Knights for 40K which are typically seen as valuable buys). Initial buy in may seem more because there isn't a Kill Team/War Cry/Spearhead/Combat Patrol game attached to TOW, but it quickly becomes a cheaper game for any size beyond those small skirmish games (and a Battalion is barely more than that and you get so much more).

    My O&G army is just made using models I like, it will probably suck if I play against anyone with competitive list but who cares? I like the look of two armies across the field of battle from one another, ranked up, banners waving, a bit of humor tossed in and possibly a drink or two.

      Locally, in Indianapolis, Indiana, we have a strong community and decent tournament scene. There have been a lot of small to mid-size tournaments all over the midwest. But honestly, and I've never been a tournament guy myself, I've had a great time and enjoyed meeting new people through them. As a family man, tournaments provide me a painting goal and a chance to book off a full game day once a quarter ahead of time that works around my family. We don't take things super seriously. Now there is an escalation league and we are running beginner game nights to bring people into the hobby in our local store. Tournaments are what you make of them I think.

    In our infinite wisdom and magnanimity, we hereby decree that in order to fully restore your standing in the eyes of the Old World, you must:

    Host a sacrificial fire in our honour-burn obsolete gadgets and regrettable fashion choices. S’mores optional.

    Would be interested to know how many OW fans are new to the game or are people coming back from WFB days? Good to hear it's selling well enough over time to probably be supported longer term. It's my fave GW universe so glad it's around. Great fun exploring the world before WFB as well. Feels new again. Now the only thing they need to re-release is WHQ95!!! We saw how popular the HQ reinvention with Avalon Hill has been so I reckon GW will want some of that nostalgia money with WHQ.

    Yeah, my group plays a niche historical which the local LGS' don't stock, and the expectation is that we pay for the venue the 1-2 times a year when we pack the places out. Easier to organize than a rec-centre and we do get a few people who come round and have a look, even if most of them have no interest it's still good to get the system out there.

    I’m sitting here building and painting old Empire models that I’ve had since 2000, I think. Bought the new Tomb Kings box set. Made the mistake of picking up a bunch of Dwarfs from the AoS line... think they would have been cheaper after the reboxing. Warhammer Fantasy was my first love for tabletop, and The Old World is currently consuming 100% of my hobby budget, dollars and time. There’s plenty of stuff I still need to buy... Orc Boss on Wyvern, Anvil, several new gyrocopters, the wagons. The game is doing pretty well here, one Saturday tournament a month and open gaming every Friday evening. The Old World is an interesting game... probably would benefit from some rules and points tweaks just to calm down some of the more op units.

    I think you'll see much more sales with high elves and especially Empire when they'll get out in 2025.
    Basically, the game was treated like a "normal new game" : just two factions at the start, then one faction gradually - new players come in when the faction they want to play is available. Talking about official miniatures here.
    As for the printed armies, I feel like there's also the question of value. Printed armies have basically zero values on the miniature market, they're more suited to people who love having their unique army. And it's still easier to buy physical miniatures than printing your own in your house.

    So that's the question then, how do you maintain that early game phase and avoid the "solved meta" phase?
    Obviously the best way is if your player base chooses to "keep it casual", but I remember tournament rules from 5th edition 40K where they put extra restrictions into army design?
    Inn any game, 40k, age of sigmar, old world, etc, you can encourage a singleton format. I appreciated that about bolt action years ago, a lot of the army lists involved a lot of 0-1 of most of the unit types.
    Obviously you have limited time and space in the shop, and it's great if your community gathers amongst themselves to play and doesn't rely on your tables to do so, but at the same time it does help reveal to new players that the existing community is into the game if you can schedule table time on your public calendar. IE "Friday night magic" so anyone looking into it knows when and where they can bring their old world army and meet up with other players.

    Is there a reason game stores don't do table rental fees? It seems like that would be the most straightforward way to solve awkwardness around people wanting to play a game but who don't necessarily need to buy something. It would take a lot of the ambiguity out of that interaction.
    edit- Some amount of the fee could be redeemable for store credit to incentivize sales

    • @lordsofwargamesandhobbies3905
      @lordsofwargamesandhobbies3905  2 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      The ambiguity in my experience is only there in cases where the player doesn't regularly support the store (buys stuff elsewhere, 3d prints etc).
      The people running the shop know their customers and if you buy your stuff there they know - there's no ambiguity.
      If you want to play somewhere that you aren't supporting financially, have a conversation with the people running the shop, be honest, and try and work something out. At the end of the day, whatever they decide will be understandable because it is a business, and you will feel better because you were upfront with your intentions.

I also think that 3d printer people are a very loud (and irritating) minority, I do want to get into it myself, but I probably won't be printing whole armies, just bits and the odd model here or there.
