  • "Why are we having a phone-in from 1974?"
What is the worst policy a government has ever implemented? That is the phone-in question James O'Brien posed to his listeners today. Caller David isn't happy with this, pledging to bring some 'positivity' to the conversation.
This positivity, however, manifests as a seven-minute argument about immigration.

Hearing about immigration day in day out in the media does my head in. Instead of talking about the people who ran this country into the ground while filling their pockets on the way down, we are talking about people who wield no power and have no say. Its maddening but it keeps people voting against their own interests and that's why we talk about it so often.

That is the Tory Party strategy: distract the population by blaming anyone (the unemployed, the disabled, the EU and now asylum-seekers and the Supreme Court) for the corruption and incompetence of the Tory Party, aided and abetted by their client media (mainly non-domicile billionaires) who have also profited from the corruption and incompetence.

I think the caller doesn't know that to apply for asylum, you literally have to reach the UK mainland, this island. That is the legal requirement, the legal route to get here. That is the main problem. The caller really needs to realise this, otherwise we will not move forward.
Unfortunately, the English government just prefers to dodge the bullet and smear the current situation and paint this immigration as illegal. I would love to say the current immigration is illegal and the government has got the right approach, but it simply isn't the case.

Yes, imigration may well be "keeping the NHS together" and the reason for this is like other in other industries, the NHS has decided it is easier and cheaper to import people from abroad than to train the natives up to do those jobs. Those that are trained up face depressed wages (due to immigration) and often take up jobs in other countries that will pay them more money.
Immigration begets immigration. It is the solution to a problem it itself has caused.

The Bobby Fuller/Clash reference went right over David's head. Still waiting to hear how 240 million being bunged to Rwanda & who knows how much in chartered planes not taking off, all the legal costs, without anybody going is of any use & that Rwanda can only take a couple of hundred per year-which will cost the British taxpayer more than it would to process them here, that Rwanda will be sending a number of their refugees here as part of the deal & that anybody sent there will be deported back to the UK if they get in trouble & that just a few years back Rwanda executed refugees for complaining about the quality of food & the Tories trying to rip up the human rights act for everybody. Please tell us the positives about any of this David & why you will be voting Tory at the next election?

That is an enormous exaggeration. Rwanda has been given 300 million £ of UK taxpayers' money for sending ZERO asylum seekers there. Perhaps it would be useful for the UK taxpayers to know what Rwanda has spent the money on.

STOP THE STUDENTS, STOP THE WORKERS, few care about the detail or the reasons for the numbers, just the headline “STOP THE BOATS” . Year ending 2022 Asylum was 76k, year ending 2021 was 57k, year ending 2018 was 32k - so poor souls seeking asylum has increased BUT in 2018 the total coming to study was 127k, end of 2022 was 360k, those arriving with work visas was 86k in 2018 and 235k in 2022. Humanitarian (includes Hong Kong Ukraine etc this is where we provide safe passage /flights from their location into the UK) was 6k in 2018 and 172k in 2022. Approx 60k illegally entered the UK in 2022 of those around 70% will qualify for asylum. We currently have a build up of 165k waiting for the asylum case to be heard and assessed 75% (124k) have been waiting in excess of 6 months and live in centres, hotels, a barge etc. SO IF we have a real problem with ‘immigrants’ and migration then we also need to STOP the students, STOP the workers, STOP the humanitarian (Hong Kong, Ukraine etc) just stop it all and face the consequences. Final FACT those claiming asylum cannot claim benefits, those granted asylum status or are here on humanitarian grounds can. The £150 million spent on Rwanda should have been invested in the home office refugee assessment centres, but we would most likely require overseas workers to come in as the UK has shortage!!

There are alternatives, David. We set up processing centres abroad in safe countries such as France, who have kindly offered to host such a centre, and use the money that has thus far been going to Rwanda to properly fund it all. Suddenly like magic, boat crossings would dry up and the few that do cross illegally would be deported with far more ease than at the moment as due to the safe routes established it can be argued in court that they are in fact not legitimate refugees.
