Napier Backroadz SUV Tent Review

  • The kind folks at Napier SUV tents out of Quebec Canada contacted me and asked if I would review their Backroadz SUV tent. Despite not really being a “tent guy” I agreed to do a video review and also shoot some photos of it set up for them. After receiving the tent I tried to do this review many times up at Roche Lake in BC, Canada. With a full-time job plus commute, all the campers and fishermen at that lake as well as challenges with smoke from the nearby forest fires this season I wasn’t able to get the time I wanted to do it right from a photo/video aspect. Once fall arrived I found a nice day to take a drive to Logan Lake, BC and get it done. Here are my thoughts on this tent that fits to the back opening of any SUV.
    Note: this is NOT a “how-to” instructional video on how to set up the tent.

    Wish they made a popup like you see vendors use at markets, that all sides can be closed from the elements, and snugs around rear of vehicle. They are up in minutes. If you are going to be in one location for a given time, what your using may be fine, but if your traveling every day and setting up at night. that's a lot of work to have go through. Thanks for taking the time to demonstrate with your busy schedule .

      It's like any other 10x10 tent with the exception Of the one side opens up into your SUV. I really didn't think I had to show "more" of the interior being as it's just another tent. Most people I know know what the inside of a tent looks like. Plus, all the specs are listed on the website which I linked to. :)

      Wayne On The Road I do understand what you were saying. However, I am very new to tent camping. Sometimes, it’s easier to get a better idea of space by seeing it in conjunction with an object. In this case, by walking in and around the tent, or showing what can fit in there would have given me a Better idea of the space. But, thank you for your time.

    • @Wayneontheroad
      @Wayneontheroad  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kellylorang6845 I did walk in and around the tent. I also show myself standing in it with my arms outstretched from outside through the mesh which shows the size in relation to me, who If I remember correctly stated that I'm almost 6ft tall. Anyway, if it helps, go to your local outdoors store where they have tents set up, look at a 10x10 tent and then picture a zip-up door into your SUV. That will give you a good idea of the space. Thanks for watching.

      @@Wayneontheroad I agree with Kelly. I was waiting the whole video to see a good look at the inside of the tent suv opening area. You unzipped and only showed a small portion yet spoke about nonsense for rather long. Just my 2 cents.

    I've had a Napier SUV tent adapted to my pickup with a topper for 3 years. We use it as a "basecamp" when we vacation. Setup gets easier with experience. The only real complaint I had were the cheesy wire stakes. I had replacement stakes the same day that we got the tent. Otherwise, worth every penny.

    After watching this, I'm probably going to be looking to add one to my Honda Passport set up. I car camp all winter in Arizona, attending events and get togethers. I tried an easy up style awning and it didn't give me all I want for me and my small dog. I had a Taj Mahal huge 3 room Napier on my Vantucket a few years back. I love the drive away feature for holding a campsite. Thanks for the review Wayne

    I appreciated the tent set up - in the Wind-. Because that seems to always be the case, for me at least. First realistic videoing of a tent set up I have come acrossed !!
    I want to see how hard it is to get done alone. And how noisy the tent is when the wind is blowing . And how cheap them stakes are too !!! All that is realistic reviewing. No park-like setting in perfect weather, who needs that ? It goes without saying, that it is a tent. Give me outdoor conditions ! so thanks for picking a windy day. ...Now... to find a TH-cam review of it on a realistic Rainy day 😎

    • @Wayneontheroad
      @Wayneontheroad  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No worries @super soul, cheap pegs aside the tent is a decent tent. Like I said in the video I'm not really a tent guy but was able to get it set up. I could see it being an even easier process after doing it a couple more times. Pegged in good and strapped down tight to the SUV it should be okay in the wind. There was some flapping in the wind (noise) but again, just tying some stuff down may help. Thanks so much for watching and leaving a comment. It's appreciated. Cheers.

Use the back window of your TENT face the back of your rigs window.rain PROOF. Wind proof.steak it all down .good to go. Takes like maybe 5 min to set up.that way SAVE ALOT OF money, and have a TENT hooked to your rig..well everyone have a great time camping😊

  • @phoenixbyrd79
    @phoenixbyrd79 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    45 degrees, drive into the ground so only a small portion of the hook is poking out, enough for you to use a spare hook to pull out. I've never had a problem with those "cheap" hooks, even during a tornado watch with wind whipping like crazy.

    • @Wayneontheroad
      @Wayneontheroad  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's cool. The last time I used a tent was the 5 years I attended Burning Man and those little hooks would get you laughed at no matter what angle you tried to hammer them in at. So that is where my headspace is at, they wouldn't hold up there and were pulling out of the gravel where I set this up so....

    Very helpful review, thank you sir! I am contemplating buying one for use in the UK this year. I'm not sure about the coverage offered by the rain fly (it gets very wet over here) and wonder how tight you might tie it down. Also, I haven't yet seen a review which details the peg-down points for the base of the tent. Great review though and top point regarding the pegs - any pegs for that matter.

    • @Wayneontheroad
      @Wayneontheroad  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Douglas. Like I stated in the review I didn't peg down all the rain fly etc due to not staying in it that night. I grew up in Vancouver Canada where it gets A LOT of rain also and I think pegged down properly (with better pegs) it could be a pretty tight and cozy little tent if on the wet and dreary days. It's all about the proper set up at that point. The peg down points are your standard rings in the corners. Seemed to be well attached but again it was the pegs that didn't want to stay on the rocky ground I was on there. Hope that helps a little more and thanks for watching. Wayne.

      Many people would be sleeping in their SUV which is the main appeal of the tent. You could fit two small cots in there but it would tight. I do show the inside and talk about the height. It's not an official review, for proper specs and dimensions etc you should be visiting their main website and looking at the models you're interested in. Thanks for watching though, sorry it wasn't up to your standards.

      Get some magnet strips and secure the loose areas to the metal of the vehicle. The magnet strips come in a coil and I think you can get them at Home Depot, Wal-Mart, etc. They are not expensive.

    • @Wayneontheroad
      @Wayneontheroad  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Specs are what the website is for. I stated in the video that I was simply setting it up to do a review and wasn't using it. Since the sun is shining in the video, the day I set it up, it's hard to review how it is in the rain. You can get an idea of the height of it based on the SUV it's attached to. I commented on the zippers and the build quality as well as the pegs.
