Weird maps is an exceptionally great series; reexploring the old times is done perfectly with your type of presentation. As for a suggestion, I'd recommend dr_office, dr_block, or other good, old-ish TF2 deathrun maps which still let players access some secrets scattered around them. I think they'd fit perfectly, with the references in the traps and so forth.
If you are interested in covering Gmod Tower, but don't want to worry about covering it on an "unofficial" server, the devs actually put up an official server a few years ago that's still running called GMT Reunion. I believe the plan was to keep it up and running until its spiritual successor, Tower Unite, was out of Early Access, at which point the source code for the gamemode is supposed to become publicly available.
@@Whomobile the code for one of these rehosts is now out because of the two lead devs doing some stuff, it's hard to find currently but i've gotten it running and it's much MUCH better then the current official rehost, even including a semi-unfinished server pixeltail dmca'ed on launch that backports the tram from tower unite and finishes the lobby 2 map ALSO, pixeltail might release the lobby 1 and 2 code soon because of how close they are to 1.0, which is when they promised the code would release for lobby 1 and 2
If you join a community server running a surf map, then use the map command while connected to that server, the required options will still be in effect on the local server, allowing you easily play any surf map by yourself
Do you think you'll make a spin-off series for maps that dont meet the "weird" criteria? I love your style of videos, and watching you cover Source engine content is a very relaxing way to pass the time. Thanks for making these ❤
I want to +1 this. The videos we've had thus far have covered some of my childhood faves, but there are some absolutely.. beautiful.. maps out there which could be worth a video of.
Have you ever considered covering weird Left 4 Dead campaigns? Night Terror by Nipper and Haunted Forest by Snow are classic Source Engine weirdness that doesn't fall into these "no no" categories, not to mention the incredibly odd Glubtastic series by Dr. Face. I also made a weird campaign about time travel called Time to Die, it's full of offbeat easter eggs and I'd be happy to chat about it.
As long as you find a given map weird/interesting, I'm all for it. This has been one of my favourite internet series and I hope this will be the case for a possibly long time.
4:00 Always of approve and love hearing PLOK's OST being used as it is a pure banger. Oh and good video too explaining your reasons, can definitely feel with the bhop maps as im trash at them too so I get it lul
This series is one of my favorite things to watch on yt. Whether it be a map I'm nostalgic for like gm_adventurers or something I've never heard of like oc_diving_v9 It's very enjoyable to hear your narration and listen to the stories behind these maps.
There’s these tf2 servers running a very weird series of mvm maps that definitely fit the category, they’re all part of a storyline and it gets very convoluted and bizarre, I can’t remember the map names though
Sunset Gulch has some good history behind its versions for sure And man is it fun running custom built trains up and down the grades, doing switching ops, or even just chillin with friends on its many levels doing anything
There was a few weird space ship maps for gmod that i thought were pretty weird. Something called the "Avalon" i think? Its somewhat strange. And RP_Chromeliner. Also there was a fairly odd wintery map i used to play? I forgot the name but it gave me chills whenever i played it.
I love this series so much that I wish you also covered very popular maps and also having a bit of a history dive to how they were made and when they started getting popular. Keep up the good work!
gm_boreas is pretty cool, but i’m not sure if it counts as weird. it has cool environmental storytelling, but a lot of love and effort was made and exploring it just feels like you’re walking around a horror movie or game.
The drama aspect I can definitely understand. That's better relegated to channels that have the patience and passion for that. I don't mind community deep dives, but not everyone needs to or wants to do that. It can be emotionally draining
I'd love to see video on sunsetgultch, to be honest it's one of my favorite maps. to my knowledge not to many people outside of the train build community know about it. If you do plan on covering it I suggest downloading some public locomotives or try to build one yourself using some tutorials, as the best way to experience sunset is by train. And if anyone is planning on building a train I suggest watching this video:th-cam.com/video/UCyloJG1NyM/w-d-xo.html as it's probably the best train tutorial out there
Tbh I feel like if you talk to Magnum MacKivler (the creator of the map) they might give you something, as well as helping explain the entire story of Sunset Gulch and the future of the map/trainbuild in general. The map has a very interesting and long story. I've been apart of the community for nearly 6 years now and I have a lot of (mostly positive) memories associated with the map.
I used to be a part of FC&N many years ago, was around kinda for a year and then fell off. Sunset Gulch is a great map, but its laser focus on being an amazing map for trainbuild would probably make it pretty boring to cover for someone who's not into the whole scene. For what it's worth, I was always partial to gm_trainset_snowy
A really, really well made AND super weird map I would recommend for a video is dr_playstation for TF2. I know you said no maps based off other games, but dr_playstation is a LOT more than that. It has so many insane secrets and is so impressive that it would be a really good and fun video. If you could contact the creator and get an interview on some of the weird decisions like the secret final boss or the obsession with Buzz Lightyear, I'd be ALL over that. That being said, I'll be around for any weird map video you make. I love hearing about this kinda thing! Like and sub well earned.
a map which might be interesting enough for you to cover (which id love to see on the weird maps series) is trade_omnichamber_v2, its the same vibe as trade_what, trade_abstract and other maps made by conne, and (to my knowledge) doesnt have any nasty stuff on the map or associated to the map.
I will watch every episode you put out friend, this series is so interesting to me-to think that some maps will be lost to time but once had many memories made of them makes me feel
I love this series. Old weird source maps always have a certain style to them that I get a strange nostalgia for, even with maps that I have never seen before.
I'd argue Fork has some interesting bits to it, such as the various missile silos, the lack of enterable buildings, the castle, etc. Maybe it could be part of a sister series called Interesting Maps?
EDIT2: This map is also the reason i bought a playstation one (The original one) I have a map that is good, well-made and took *4 years* to build. Now that isn't the main reason why it is good, there is a multitude of reasons why I think so highly of this map. Dr_Playsation_final is a deathrun map that was based off 5 different ps1 games. they are as follows. Toystory 2, Crash bandicoot, Spyro, Gex 3D and Wipeout. Now i have a lot to say about this map so i will portion it so. What makes the map high quality) The map as mentioned earlier took 4 years before being given the "_final" to the map name however it still has a few bugs due to some servers having BHOP scripts and whatnot. The map has 3 things that are extremely noteworthy. 1) The map has a save feature where if you complete a game (i will talk about that later) the map will save your progress as long as the server isn't shut down. 2) The map is 99% custom textures models and sounds (Custom being assets are taken from the ps1 games if not made by the map makers). some of the models such as Spyro and Gex have animations where their bodies would behave as if they where actually in a ps1 game. 3) The map is closer to a game than it is to a tf2 map. (you can come back to this point once you read the rest of the comment.) I will now explain the entirety of the map as played from start to finish. You start the match as RED outside the "Complex" that is featured in Toystory 2. If you are BLU you are inside the vents with a screen in front of you. on the screen are 5 images and a prompt telling you to pick a song. Should you not pick the map will simply do it for you. as the Runner (RED) you proceed to go inside the well themed map with slight parkour and accompanying music. If you are lucky you might just spot a white playstation one card with the text "cheats" scribbled on with marker. But i will touch base on that later. you go down a vent and appear in a sort of office, jump up on the chair and onto the table you see your path is blocked and a red switch. Upon hitting the switch the door in front of you opens and 2 "elevators" begin. When one goes up the other goes down before switching directions. after more parkour and traps you are finally at the top. You see a fan blowing you up into the vent and you don't know what to expect. You jump inside revealing a room with health packs and a mysterious voice. Zurg appears! poised to attack! with his blaster he shoots foam balls at you dealing tons of damage. Classic video game style you have to hit him 3 times to stun him, after he is stunned he loses 1 hp out of 4 and will now shoot for around 5-10 seconds uninterrupted and invulnerable. then you hear an alarm. the floor is made out of fans that all start at once, you fly up into the air while dodging his attacks. a few more attacks later and he explodes in defeat. a big fan comes out in the middle. you go in it to be launched upwards revealing a white room. it has an outlet, cd's, cartridges, a sort of shredder? oh, and a playstation 1. Hitting the power button turns the playstation off. Hitting the open disc button opens it up as a robot arm begins to remove the disc and place one of 4 discs in side. you must now complete a small minigame based off the ps1 game that was inserted. after winning you are awared a trophy in the beginning based of the game you won. That is 1 game. Trying to play the map again. You realize, something has changed. There's posters scattered around, hidden messages. What could this mean? after a few more games you have now completed all 4 of the games. now you are about to hear something straight out of a fever dream. going to the ps1 the next time places a cd without cover art. Scribbled onto it is the text "The shining" Uncaring you start the ps1. You hear tv static as Johnny from the shinning appears on your scream as you are teleported somewhere else. you get the classic line "here's Johnny" and he chases after you in the famous hotel for a bit. you break a window in your way and you are now outside. there you must find the exit of a maze where you see what looks like a grave that reads "here lies Johnny" after tricking him to fall into the hole you are now greeted with a hidden path on a conveyor belt. once you step on it theres no coming back. inside you see a stadium filled with the buzz lightear cups seemingly cheering for something. a few flashes on your screen later and you have to fight a boss that is a || 3 Legged robot with a rocket launcher shooting buzz lightyear heads and a buzz lightyear "nuke" the robot also has a tv showing Johnny's face. || You now have to trick him into shooting the nukes onto the glass around the arena to hit the levers that will damage johnny. do this 3 times to kill him. on the last hit he will ONLY be shooting nukes. Kill him and you are awarded with the maps 100% completion. So. Now for the secrets. There is a cheat card that has 15 different spawn locations all around the map. each spawn location is random. Upon touching the cheatcard your character will now be holding "the intelligence" and now is where the fun part of the map comes in. Go to the very end of the map and as you might expect. You can plug the fucking card into the ps1. this DOES alter gameplay. like the name suggests its a cheat card that allows you to cheat. This makes the minigames substantially easier. Do you not like dirty cheaters? well then just plug the cheat card into the convenient "Cheat card shredder" also found in the playstation room. At 100% completion you are awarded with a new cheatcard called the 100% card. this card respawns all players when inserted into the ps1 and when shredded will delete your progress. When you are at 100% you have a 1/10 chance every game to see one of the elevators in the first half having a "green light". if you see this and you know what your are doing. you are in for a fucking treat. Go to the elevator and it opens up showing you a door saying "for the love of god do not open". as the chad you are you enter. Revealing the "bud room" showing countless of "paintings" of cursed Buzz lightyear images. One of the images say the buzz lightyear line "It appears there are not intelligent organisms" or something. There is a small buzz lightyear infront of that image. Hit it. you are now inside the secret bud room. where if you know how to (i do) you can spawn the bud card. now the bud card can already spawn however it is a miniscule chance. Getting the bud card will teleport you after like 5 seconds to the ps1 room. instantly. here you have 2 options. Insert the bud card. or shred it. Inserting it plays "Strange things" from toystory while having overlays of buzzlightyears face dance across your screen. Choose to shred the card and you are in for a treat. it instantly starts spewing out buzz lightyear sprites and starts to shake the ground. after a bit you hear the pirates of the carribean but ultra deformed. you can see a picture of buzzlighyear saying "You killed everything. Good job cowboy" and its not a joke. Shredding the card WILL crash the server you are currently on. I can't go into much depth as im in writing but this map is FUCKING AMAZING and i have nowhere to vent on how much i fucking love this map. I wont tell how to spawn the bud card here as it can still crash servers so i choose to be safe and not share that information. This map was supposed to have more but because of the limits of the hammer engine stuff had to be removed. The map has a trailer: th-cam.com/video/k8NKDAXMUUM/w-d-xo.html It has an OST: th-cam.com/video/-CkufoDStyY/w-d-xo.html It HAD a website (now down but you can waybackmachine it): fortresslabs.tf/playstation EDIT1:Gameplay inspiration: th-cam.com/video/Qj0WWXczQAY/w-d-xo.html EDIT1:Cut content: th-cam.com/video/U4Dd70vYpUk/w-d-xo.html If you wish to contact me or smt i have discord: Depresso_Expresso Mcspresso#7788 If you read all of this i want to say thank you for listening. and if Dr.face or Dovy or isotope or whomever from the dr_playstation_final team. To enable the use of the cvar sv_airaccelerate 100, you will need to run it on a dedicated server. This could also fix the problem with maps that fail to load on a listenserver (clientside). I recommend using steamcmd to set up a dedicated server for the map's game, then install sourcemod (& metamod). (There are plenty of guides or wiki pages that will help with this!) If you add yourself to the admin list, you can use the command in chat: !cvar sv_airaccelerate 100, or add it to the list of server.cfg commands using sm_cvar sv_airaccelerate 100. Hope this helps!
I actually just worked with tf2 and air accel. The air accel option doesnt exist in the base game, the way I had to get it to work was hosting my own dedicated server with source mod and running sv_airaccelerate 150 on there.
I imagine videogame map rule also goes for other series so stuff like ponyville source map falls under that too. Because I imagine there is plenty to go into about how TF2 free to play and rise of being fandom complimented a few together.
"Criteria #2: Port of Other Video Game Maps aren't allowed." Me: *Side-eyes DM_SDM, which is a recreation of a location from a Bullet Hell Video Game Series and was covered on this channel*
Hmm, if you wanted any suggestions for an interesting gamemode to review, I’d suggest Jazztronauts if you’re not familiar with it. You’re basically part of a group of inter dimensional cat burglars.
There's an insane map I played on the synergy mod, it had a bunch of different levels to it and was extremely difficult and offers no assistance to the players at all. Most of the synergy maps are weird tbh
Gmod Tower came back for a bit a few years ago with Gmod Tower Reunion. It was Lobby 1 and I believe the content is still hosted, but either they purposely left out content or it simply broke, but there are missing textures everywhere. No one plays the lone server they host for it still, but I think it all works? It seems they care way more about the code for GMT than the maps since some stay up on the workshop, but the original Lobby maps aren’t up anywhere which is a shame.
The broken elements are mainly due to GMod updates causing conflict issues(This was the major reason as to why they went standalone in the first place) and given the small team size of TU, there's no one to properly maintain it as everyone is working on TU.
@@2Joe90 The reason why they switched over to Unreal was because they were hitting the limits on the Source engine (that's what they stated waaaaay back when they showed off TU).
Perhaps for the ones that you are unsure about making a full video on, you could make a TH-cam Shorts series for them? That would allow you to cover them without needing to draw it out for a whole full length video.
I've been looking at it for a weird map vid, just working out how to set it up lay it out ect. I was warned it has some weird link to Thomas the Tank Engine Roleplay? idk what that means
@@Whomobile It's not linked to Thomas the Tank Engine so much as a massive portion of the Trainbuild sector of Garry's Mod are just kids who like trains, and they enjoy replicating what they love. I'm not sure if this fits into your style of content, but I could show you what the map looks like when people are driving trains on it like a real railroad.
A list of maps that (I hope) fit into the criteria of a map you'll cover. (Edit: I forgot to add Growing Map when I first wrote this.) EX1 - Growing Map (Started off tiny but the author kept adding in new rooms suggested by comments on the workshop page.) 1 - gm_gmall (Really well made map full of fun little secrets.) 2 - de_apehouse (Absolute classic map. There is also a Christmas version that's quite nice.) 3 - GMod13_Hotels (One of my absolute favorites, just so interesting to explore.) 4 - gm_novenka (Has a similar feeling to gm_mobenix_v3. Really big sandbox map sorta deal.) 5 - supersizeroom_v2 (Another classic map, just a wonderful relic of Source.) 6 - HomeTown 1999 (Really comfy map of a small town, has a bunch of shops and stuff like that to explore.)
I think I may have mentioned it before but, there's a map called cp_boulder_v5 that I think would be interesting to cover, not because of the map itself, since I think it would fall on the first category, just a decent control point map that was made years ago, but because a really old flight through video made by the map maker started to get recommended to me and maybe a few other people, at least for me it first appeared in my recommendations after I started to watch your weird maps videos like 2 years ago, also the map itself is a little bit difficult to download, as you need to go through a bunch of dead links via wayback machine to even get it. I feel like that makes it somewhat interesting, seeing as it's on some kind of weird limbo state. Or idk, maybe the map is well known and I'm just an idiot but as far as I know I've never seen it in any community server I've been to.
command for surfing requires sourcemod so you would probably think you couldn't surf on client made server however, there is a very simple solution to bypass this, and it is to simply join any surf server, leave, then load the map yourself hope this helps and you may cover surf maps command itself is: sm_cvar sv_airaccelerate # and it is hidden by default in tf2 for some odd reason
Hey Who, maybe it's been covered before individually, but a chance for a video about old TF2 Community Server "Hangout" Maps? If they might even still exist anywhere online, Ones created around 2012-2015 for a group of friends to goof around in? (If that makes any sense.) That time where Community Servers were popular. As an example, I personally remember a server that was like a little town, had a bar, train, tennis court, boxing ring, and buildings you could go in. Also had a Phys cube with a Dead Leaves characters Face on it that you could kick around. Wish It could be seen again hah. Great Video man!
You mentioned something about the map trade_connie(I have no clue what the map is and the name was not shown, this is just my guess of it) and how it crashes you back to the *menu*. That specific wording makes it seem like the map itself is somehow booting you back to the menu. Maybe decompile it to search for anything that may be used as a form of map protection? I know of atleast one other map which has a form of map protection built in, making it near useless unless manipulated in hammer
I used to be super into tf2 prophunt. It's basically completely dead nowadays but it had some cool maps made for it that I'd love to see you look at. ph_cyberpunk and ph_cchotel come to mind.
one map that would probably never appear on this series but are just way too small for a video is that one map from Fortress Forever (and ported to TF2C/Open Fortress at some point) that is literally just a single, long grassy area with a hill in the middle floating in the sky void. Two bases at the end with no spawn rooms, and a flag. It's not a GOOD map, it's basically 2fort on steroids, and it's extraordinarily simple, but it's fun and interesting to look at.
I think jailbreak maps potentially deserve some attention. Although jailbreak isn't for everyone - hell, I'm fairly partial to the gamemode personally and I've probably played it more than most when I was younger - there are certainly some strange ones out there. Not sure if you have covered any already, though.
Have you played gm_abstraction_extended? I don't know if it would fit the criteria, but standing on the music box as it orbits the map is a real treat. The aesthetic is simply beautiful.
Whomobile I would love to see you do a video on vsh_weaponsdepot. I remember that map had a shack that would teleport you places but would also instakill you for entering. In a match you would have to use the dead ringer to enter that death shack. Also just that there are many iterations of that map and I’m curious to see all the changes, it might not be weird enough though.
Solution for the surfing problem is stupidly simple, just type "sv_airaccelerate" in the console and change it to a higher value, sumple as that. You can do the same thing foe bhop maps in CSS, and in CSGO you can even do sv_enablebunnyhopping and sv_autobunnyhopping to bhop whilst holding spacebar. Easy solutions to an easy problem without any silly workarounds.
Hi. Haven't watched the video yet, but I have a couple of map recommendations. Could you have a look at gm_fork, gm_excess (all maps in the excess series), trade_clocktown_v1a, dm_rainbow_road_b1 (and other maps from other non source games), zs_obj_e_girl_e_quest_e3, some of the gmod tower maps, and similar stuff? I've love to see you cover some surf/bhop maps too, and it'd also be cool if you looked at some maps themed around/loosely filled with hateful content. I think that would be especially fun to watch!! Thanks for reading.
Afaik, joining a surf server caches the settings so you can then fire up your own clientserver and maybe give yourself some "easier" gravity + airaccel
You could easily outsource the maps that require a specific skill to a viewer or something alike, and voice over their footage exploring the map using said skill. I'm surprised you even count that as a hinder to making a weird map video on for example, a bhop map....
Can you make a video about the short map indicators? CTF, CP and so on. But I don't mean just the main maps but any kind of these, what they are and what they are called.
the tf2 ones indicate gamemode: CTF: Capture the Flag CP: Control Points (either attack/defend or 5cp) PL: Payload PLR: Payload Race KOTH: King of the Hill Trade: community ""gamemode"", just used on maps that have no real objective and are good gathering spots for traders or a deathmatch DM: deathmatch (not exclusive to tf2, also not a default gamemode) VSH: Versus Saxton Hale. large arena maps for the Versus Saxton Hale gamemode. Arena: Arena gamemode Dr: Deathrun. For the deathrun community gamemode - long hallways of traps that players must run through, with a player activating the traps. also not a tf2 exclusive Ba; Ba_Jb; Jb: Jailbreak community gamemode, not tf2 exclusive these are just a few. a full video on it would be nice, but if youre ever confused i probably know them
I thought I had commented before, but it seems to have disappeared. I apologize if I am therefore repeating myself. I love this series a lot. It's quite relaxing and entertaining to see these maps explored, and many of these bizarre locations stick in my mind for a long time after. If I may make a recommendation, I'd suggest gm_the_facility for this series.
I would love to see you cover some VSH maps like toy fort or MVM_Robot_Destruction series which is an MVM story series of maps that uses the robots in a pretty interesting way like a robot with multiple health bars. If you are intrested i would love to see you cover custom TF2 gamemodes like the afformentioned VSH which is modified arena with 1 super strong player fighting red team or TFware which is like WarioWare in tf2
ok, these maps at most *really* skirt the line on rules 2 and 3 (2 because while still original geometry/map design it's still *based* on a webcomic [within a webcomic] in theme and 3 because said webcomic is homestuck [or sweet bro and hella jeff which is within it, but theres still a few direct ties to homestuck itself moreso in the sequel map) but the sweet bro and hella jeff "maops" are..... fucking wild enough to work. you could somewhat easily tackle them both at once cause 1 is really basic while 2 is far more detailed. might make for a sliiightly longer than average video but you could knock the first out within less than 10 minutes
If u need help setting up a local server for TF2 just look at some tutorials, once you do it you can just install the surf sourcemod addon thingy for example and add the map in a folder... Takes very little time.
Honestly, a part of me really understands why GMOD Tower revivals keep getting shut down. The code should belong to the original developers and they should have unalienable right over it's usage. It could also hinder sales of Tower Unite though that's debatable I suppose. It does certainly work against the philosophy that Tower Unite was founded on, switching engines in order to make a bigger game. TU is already getting pretty close to providing the experience that GMOD Tower did and more. The custom content support is so great that I genuinely don't see a reason why they should go back to the Source Engine, especially considering GMT would have stagnated on updates long ago because they were already bringing the engine to it's utter knees. I feel like this is one of the rare cases where holding onto the past in that way is just counter-intuitive to the experience. Case and point, Tower doesn't need to be on Source Engine to be Tower, and the Source Engine was just getting too old to hold Tower.
Weird maps is an exceptionally great series; reexploring the old times is done perfectly with your type of presentation. As for a suggestion, I'd recommend dr_office, dr_block, or other good, old-ish TF2 deathrun maps which still let players access some secrets scattered around them. I think they'd fit perfectly, with the references in the traps and so forth.
been needing to look at death run maps, will do!
@@Whomobile 👌Rock on
dr_block man, it's gone from servers now
If you are interested in covering Gmod Tower, but don't want to worry about covering it on an "unofficial" server, the devs actually put up an official server a few years ago that's still running called GMT Reunion.
I believe the plan was to keep it up and running until its spiritual successor, Tower Unite, was out of Early Access, at which point the source code for the gamemode is supposed to become publicly available.
I believe that never ended up happening iirc
actaully a quick look shows that it did! cool
One thing I'd like to point out, the take downs were over stolen code they had written themselves and attempting to profit over it.
@@biscuitbuncream they were never attempting to profit off it :/
@@Whomobile the code for one of these rehosts is now out because of the two lead devs doing some stuff, it's hard to find currently but i've gotten it running and it's much MUCH better then the current official rehost, even including a semi-unfinished server pixeltail dmca'ed on launch that backports the tram from tower unite and finishes the lobby 2 map
ALSO, pixeltail might release the lobby 1 and 2 code soon because of how close they are to 1.0, which is when they promised the code would release for lobby 1 and 2
If you join a community server running a surf map, then use the map command while connected to that server, the required options will still be in effect on the local server, allowing you easily play any surf map by yourself

gm_boreas is pretty cool, but i’m not sure if it counts as weird. it has cool environmental storytelling, but a lot of love and effort was made and exploring it just feels like you’re walking around a horror movie or game.
I think any map with secrets in them work for these. You could literally walk around Dustbowl and just point out out of bounds stuff
The drama aspect I can definitely understand.
That's better relegated to channels that have the patience and passion for that. I don't mind community deep dives, but not everyone needs to or wants to do that. It can be emotionally draining
Absolutely love the weird maps series. As long as you're enjoying making it I'll tune in
I'd love to see video on sunsetgultch, to be honest it's one of my favorite maps. to my knowledge not to many people outside of the train build community know about it.
If you do plan on covering it I suggest downloading some public locomotives or try to build one yourself using some tutorials, as the best way to experience sunset is by train.
And if anyone is planning on building a train I suggest watching this video:th-cam.com/video/UCyloJG1NyM/w-d-xo.html
as it's probably the best train tutorial out there
Thank you!
Im so glad this series exists. It scratches that itch in my brain that longs for my childhood to return
I remember commenting about gm_fork, will forever be one of my favorite maps, was good to hear you talk about it. Always love your input!
saying it's a magnet for drama is an understatement, for some reason the community is full of actual nutjobs
Lol true
@@Whomobile am i youtube famous now lol
trade_coni works for me on gMod, maybe because of missing textures or models for TF2 unless you have a server with stuff to download first.
I did try Gmod but it crashed for me as well, might just be my luck lol
A really, really well made AND super weird map I would recommend for a video is dr_playstation for TF2. I know you said no maps based off other games, but dr_playstation is a LOT more than that. It has so many insane secrets and is so impressive that it would be a really good and fun video. If you could contact the creator and get an interview on some of the weird decisions like the secret final boss or the obsession with Buzz Lightyear, I'd be ALL over that.
That being said, I'll be around for any weird map video you make. I love hearing about this kinda thing! Like and sub well earned.
oh yes dr_playstation is a must cover for me
a map which might be interesting enough for you to cover (which id love to see on the weird maps series) is trade_omnichamber_v2, its the same vibe as trade_what, trade_abstract and other maps made by conne, and (to my knowledge) doesnt have any nasty stuff on the map or associated to the map.
Was not expecting to see the clocktown map on here lmao. It's one of my favourite gmod maps, if not my favourite for obvious reasons
I will watch every episode you put out friend, this series is so interesting to me-to think that some maps will be lost to time but once had many memories made of them makes me feel
I love this series. Old weird source maps always have a certain style to them that I get a strange nostalgia for, even with maps that I have never seen before.
Your weird / forgotten maps series is one of my faves to watch, thank you so much for making them
Hey! Thanks for going into detail about why you wouldn't want to cover e-girl e-quest, I understand completely why you wouldn't want to.
Jeez sometimes i see places like these in my dreams

So that means you're actually good at jump maps

I'd argue Fork has some interesting bits to it, such as the various missile silos, the lack of enterable buildings, the castle, etc. Maybe it could be part of a sister series called Interesting Maps?
EDIT2: This map is also the reason i bought a playstation one (The original one)
I have a map that is good, well-made and took *4 years* to build.
What makes the map high quality)
The map as mentioned earlier took 4 years before being given the "_final" to the map name however it still has a few bugs due to some servers having BHOP scripts and whatnot.
(you can come back to this point once you read the rest of the comment.)
I will now explain the entirety of the map as played from start to finish.

I thought that would be the case, thankyou for explaining!

i guess touhou was just swag enough to make SDM into it, huh?
"Will not cover a surf map any time soon" covers a surf map a month later
ye
I imagine videogame map rule also goes for other series so stuff like ponyville source map falls under that too. Because I imagine there is plenty to go into about how TF2 free to play and rise of being fandom complimented a few together.
"Criteria #2: Port of Other Video Game Maps aren't allowed."

Sunset Gulch is one of my favorites being not a weird one.
Hmm, if you wanted any suggestions for an interesting gamemode to review, I’d suggest Jazztronauts if you’re not familiar with it. You’re basically part of a group of inter dimensional cat burglars.
gm fork was really good, i used the castle to simulate a zombie survival campaign where the npcs are pitted against the hl2 zombies
There's an insane map I played on the synergy mod, it had a bunch of different levels to it and was extremely difficult and offers no assistance to the players at all. Most of the synergy maps are weird tbh
Syn_trials4 is the name actually it's absolutely bonkers
Seeing this open with gm_sunsetgulch threw me off lmao
same here
I've been looking at it for a weird map vid, just working out how to set it up lay it out ect.
I was warned it has some weird link to Thomas the Tank Engine Roleplay? idk what that means
@@Whomobile being a part of the community that created sunset gulch I've never heard of that link myself
(Edit: I forgot to add Growing Map when I first wrote this.)
EX1 - Growing Map (Started off tiny but the author kept adding in new rooms suggested by comments on the workshop page.)
1 - gm_gmall (Really well made map full of fun little secrets.)
2 - de_apehouse (Absolute classic map. There is also a Christmas version that's quite nice.)
3 - GMod13_Hotels (One of my absolute favorites, just so interesting to explore.)
4 - gm_novenka (Has a similar feeling to gm_mobenix_v3. Really big sandbox map sorta deal.)
5 - supersizeroom_v2 (Another classic map, just a wonderful relic of Source.)
6 - HomeTown 1999 (Really comfy map of a small town, has a bunch of shops and stuff like that to explore.)
Or idk, maybe the map is well known and I'm just an idiot but as far as I know I've never seen it in any community server I've been to.
the end singing was real funny, it's supposed to be the generic bhop montage song right?
yes
that sunsetgulch cameo at the beginning
command for surfing requires sourcemod so you would probably think you couldn't surf on client made server
however, there is a very simple solution to bypass this, and it is to simply join any surf server, leave, then load the map yourself
hope this helps and you may cover surf maps
command itself is: sm_cvar sv_airaccelerate #
and it is hidden by default in tf2 for some odd reason
i could just listen to you talk about maps for hours, weird or not, tbh.
I like your cover of thé à la menthe at the end
I remeber playing some wierd ass map called something like walmart, but you could find all sorts of wierd hidden items on it
Hey Who, maybe it's been covered before individually, but a chance for a video about old TF2 Community Server "Hangout" Maps?
Loved your rendition of the phoon vid
Gmod tower is back! Specifically in the form of a separate game called Tower Unite!
excess_islands has an interesting easteregg involving wiremod, if you made a video on the map that could be interesting to cover.
i'm sure you've been asked this before, but would you ever consider covering GoldSrc maps? or do you want to strictly stick with Source for now
i think they covered one once
Easy solutions to an easy problem without any silly workarounds.
tf2 lacks surf_airaccelerate for whatever reason so a few TF2 themed surf maps I want to look at don't work
I feel you man
These days gmod tower is it’s own separate game called Tower Unite. And yes I already did post a comment about this, gotta spread the word somehow.
Afaik, joining a surf server caches the settings so you can then fire up your own clientserver and maybe give yourself some "easier" gravity + airaccel
oh will try that
I'm not sure if you're open to suggestions, but you should make a video on Aku Aku's Crazy World for GMod
the first rule is a map has to be, uh...weird
you'd think people would pick up on that given its in the title
So that means the next episode is going to be z_umizuri? Lets goooooo

coming from experience kid, FC&N is the most toxic and annoying damn trainbuild server i've had the displeasure of joining. well *attempted* to join
You could easily outsource the maps that require a specific skill to a viewer or something alike, and voice over their footage exploring the map using said skill. I'm surprised you even count that as a hinder to making a weird map video on for example, a bhop map....
the ending sounded more like duel of fates lol
That's OK. I can't surf that good either.
Can you make a video about the short map indicators?
CTF, CP and so on.
But I don't mean just the main maps but any kind of these, what they are and what they are called.
those are called prefixes, and I suppose I could make a short about them
the tf2 ones indicate gamemode:
CTF: Capture the Flag
CP: Control Points (either attack/defend or 5cp)
PL: Payload
PLR: Payload Race
KOTH: King of the Hill
Trade: community ""gamemode"", just used on maps that have no real objective and are good gathering spots for traders or a deathmatch
DM: deathmatch (not exclusive to tf2, also not a default gamemode)
VSH: Versus Saxton Hale. large arena maps for the Versus Saxton Hale gamemode.
Arena: Arena gamemode
Dr: Deathrun. For the deathrun community gamemode - long hallways of traps that players must run through, with a player activating the traps. also not a tf2 exclusive
Ba; Ba_Jb; Jb: Jailbreak community gamemode, not tf2 exclusive
these are just a few. a full video on it would be nice, but if youre ever confused i probably know them
@@HueManatee I already knew quite a few of these aside from ba for jailbreak, ty!
@@HueManatee Exactly, I meant the other ones.
Not the ones you listed.
Aside from the jailbreak one.

If you find a bhop or surf map that's interesting enough you could just noclip around, although i guess that would make less interesting footage.
It's strange that Trade Coni crashes on you. The map is expected from conne and it worked fine when I played it.
gm_umbreona_2 is a map you should cover
There are some interesting vsh and ff2 maps
ok, these maps at most *really* skirt the line on rules 2 and 3 (2 because while still original geometry/map design it's still *based* on a webcomic [within a webcomic] in theme and 3 because said webcomic is homestuck [or sweet bro and hella jeff which is within it, but theres still a few direct ties to homestuck itself moreso in the sequel map) but the sweet bro and hella jeff "maops" are..... fucking wild enough to work. you could somewhat easily tackle them both at once cause 1 is really basic while 2 is far more detailed. might make for a sliiightly longer than average video but you could knock the first out within less than 10 minutes
fuck yes I love sweet bro and hella jeff if you want to link the maps to me
If u need help setting up a local server for TF2 just look at some tutorials, once you do it you can just install the surf sourcemod addon thingy for example and add the map in a folder...
Takes very little time.
I’m curious what is the controversy behind the ZS egirl quest map?
most maps are weird, but not all weird maps are weird maps
Case and point, Tower doesn't need to be on Source Engine to be Tower, and the Source Engine was just getting too old to hold Tower.
original mario_kart had slurs you also avoided showing. So yeah, was kinda obvious that you wouldn't cover maps with offensive content.
Speaking of weird maps, i would like you to cover koth_atrocity for TF2. As far as i know, there isn't any NSFW content on it
