The Kpop industry is kinda different from the Chinese entertainment industry. Chinese celebrities tend to have more money, power and privileges (they get paid much more and evade more taxes) than the average Kpop idols who have to pay DEBT to their companies for the initial investment into their debut. Most of them don’t earn anything until their debt is cleared. Kinda like the student loans in America.
I think Kpop idols also have a less chance of being sexually abused by their bosses who are too busy overworking them to death. They tend to be severely overworked and struggling to live up to the impossible beauty standards.
Momo from Twice (she’s Japanese) literally said on camera that her company forced her to eat only ice cubes everyday to lose weight. She said that back then she was afraid to fall asleep because she was worried she would never wake up.
Her company JYP is one of the biggest Kpop companies. One can only imagine what those idols in smaller companies go through.
Wendy (Canadian) from Red Velvet fell from a stage (over 10 meters high) because the staff there FORGOT to add stairs. She broke her pelvis and spent months in hospital. And no legal action was taken whatsoever for this severe negligence. Korean workplace safety laws are bullshit.
Tao (ex-member of EXO) said in an interview that his company forced him to work when his legs were injured and had to go to hospital. These Kpop idols literally signed away their lives to their company and had no power to refuse work schedules.
Lisa (from Thailand) from Blackpink was scammed by her own manager. It was wild.
And I haven’t even mentioned the more severe cases of Sulli, Hara etc.
Notice that a lot of those accidents and bad things happened to foreign non-Korean idols? I have a strong sense that the Kpop industry is xenophobic and bullies its foreign idols extra hard.
So I actually think that your sister idolising Kpop idols is not such a big issue in itself. It’s not a big deal to think that Blackpink members are perfect goddesses because, even though they’re not perfect, it’s very unlikely for them to be involved in super shady scandals, because they live in their company’s dorm under heavy surveillance.
For example, even if they want to do drugs, their managers are following them around and reporting everything back to their company. I’m not even making this up. The surveillance on Kpop idols is super intense and not a secret.
The much bigger problem is if your sister may think that Kpop idols are princesses/princes living a great Disney life being so beautiful and talented and famous. That is far from the truth.
I firmly believe that most Kpop idols are glamorised slaves/products of their companies. And many of them are NOT HAPPY. They signed “slave contracts” when they were underage children and now they’re stuck. They often pretend to be happy and say positive/idealistic things to the camera because they are forced to. Some have old injuries that can’t fully heal because they aren’t allowed enough time to rest.
Many of them put on their happy masks on stage and then probably go back to their dorms and take anxiety/depression medicines. I see some idols looking so cheerful and carefree on camera, and then some months later they commit suicide. It’s just sad.
If my family members ever say to me that they wanna go to Korea and pursue their idol dreams because they “want to be like Blackpink/BTS”, I will be stressed out and try my hardest to persuade them out of it. It’s just not worth it, in my opinion.

@@HanQ28 you pretty much summed up the reason why gave up the k industry all together. I felt like K idols are treated like products and not like a human being. Chinese actors/idols get paid way waaaaaaaay more and have a bit more say in their life at least.

Ah, the Idols back stage life is sucks. Even for just a little choirs performer like me, who just perform on tiny village, is still have a 'wild story' to tell. Yeah, you'll got noticed by peoples, you'll got a little fame and have a money ofc. But the drama behinds is really sucks. 😑😑😑
So when I saw a boygroup or a girlgroup, honestly I just appreciate the hardworks they did to make a good performance (especially for so called self-produce idol groups). And their good funny cam personality plus their cute handsome / beautiful faces is just an eye candy bonuses.

I’m not surprised that violence against women is seen as normal in China even if it happened to a famous actress. Drugs and alcohol in the entertainment business is a given. The nastiness that goes on in the backroom of the entertainment industry doesn’t surprise me! Don’t confuse their work with who they are in private life.

I bet not everyone in that industry is dirty or corrupted but we should keep in mind that it is also not the fantasy and glamorous novel world they show in dramas or movies. I also think that some of those behaviors are still present all around the world (H.Weinstein, Prince Andrew)…The last story was so sad and felt so real and the same time so movie-like, I hope she has a good life now. What you described isn't unique to China. Any industry where a few people hold a lot of power and wealth often leads to abuses. American actor Kevin Sorbo was asked what advice he would give to young people wanting to act. He paused and said, "Make sure there is absolutely nothing else you would rather do." He also praised a young co-star who completed her college degree while shooting a show with a crazy schedule for five years.

as someone part of the "younger demographic" i fully agree with,, everything said in this video. especially the "don't get too emotionally invested" part. if there are any other young people watching this; really, don't get overly invested. it's really not worth it. i made that mistake once, never doing it again. even if you feel obliged to, speak out for your idols or whatever, they will never know that you did it, and you're really only making yourself unhappy by caring too much about it. of course, you can still watch their videos and like what they do, but just, don't put any unrealistic expectations on them, always put up a barrier between your heart and them, for your sake because if something morally wrong that they did ever got exposed, if you're too emotionally invested, you will get crushed. and i sincerely hope it never happens to anyone so please, heed this warning and take yourself out before it's too late.

I’m also a part of the younger demographic and I think you took the words right out of my mouth. Especially in the kpop industry, I know too many younger fans who worship their idols without knowing right and wrong. This video has made me rethink the way I stan my own group, to not just love them blindly but to also see them for their flaws and imperfections. Every idol/celebrity we know are masked with a sort of perfection by the media and the people who work with them behind the scenes, so it would be great if society can stop viewing their idols as perfect because in truth, everyone makes mistakes and have their own problems.

People on social media attack me when I say that celebrities, especially actors, are always playing a role when they are in public, no matter how casual and unscripted they appear to be in interviews or on so-called reality shows. Sometimes the persona is a creation of the artist’s management, for experienced artists it may be primarily their own creation. This is the only way they can appear accessible to their fans, but protect their privacy. And then there are the actors who have a different sexual orientation. In that case, the creation and performance of their public persona has to be especially flawless.

    • @LinhNguyen-dy4ym
      @LinhNguyen-dy4ym 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

This I disagree with you, not that I support them, I just don't think that they can act well enough to stay true to their character all the time (gosh if they can, then I just have to give them props). Their true self will slip out here and there. But I do agree all celebrities have some kind of public persona, but as far as I know, it will be somewhat close to their own personalities (but with some extra decoration) so at times when they're more relaxed, they can show their true self without too much worry. Otherwise, it is a failed persona because it will break sooner or later. Especially in Cbiz, where everyone's being monitored closely from head to toe.

    • @xxkissmeketutxx
      @xxkissmeketutxx 2 ปีที่แล้ว

You hit the nail on the head. There is a very high proportion of 'different sexual orientations' in the US film industry, many are not open about it and the industry gives them a public image.
Someone working behind the scenes in the industry estimated only 10% of industry insiders there are "clean" (not perverted).
I can't speak to the Chinese industry. But it's reasonable that any industry where limits can be pushed would attract a certain type of predator.

@@LinhNguyen-dy4ym lol are you been serious. you should read more biographies of Hollywood celebrities. They always say it was so suffocating keeping a persona for 20 years plus.
Imo Britney is a good example. She was selling a persona and eventually cracked. But she ran away from home and was photographed. In a similar scenario the black vans would pick you up and lock you up and crack away behind closed doors lol.
i find c actors and actresses its not shown. Because you are an assset worth millions so people behind you will not allow cracks to show. Hence persona keeps going.
Like how can a lot of the male celebrities still be single. And girls believe it? Ooo Wallace Chung is single🤯 an "innocent" adult male. As an OLD person with many years of work, some of it in a national TV - I’m not surprised at all. The “crazy fan “ culture on one hand preys on, brainwashes and uses very young people, on the other hand, makes life of stars miserable, strips them from their privacy, sets stalkers on them, exposes them to wild gossip and slander, and literally puts them in danger… we live in a weird world. Sigh.

Thank you for making that content so that I can slap to the face of some hidden netizens who was brainwashed for times.

These stories were all so sad, although I still want to thank you for sharing them. I have seen similar types of stories play out in both the entertainment industry and other professional industries, and it always seems like the average person can't win against systemic corruption and subjugation. Your message is spot on... just focus on their works and don't idealise stars because we never know who they really are and what are their motivations.

I love your point about not being able to truly know another person. There’s certain sides of myself that I only share with certain people. I live with my parents for example, so they see me all the time, but there’s so many aspects of my life that I just don’t talk to them about. And then the people that I do share these things with, don’t live with me, so they don’t know what I’m really like when I’m at home. It’s not necessarily bad not knowing everything, but it’s true that you don’t have the whole story. Also, I’m definitely not a perfect person. Honesty there’s things in my past that could probably be used against me if I were a celebrity. These things aren’t even that bad, but if someone theoretically wanted to they could blow them out of proportion to make me look like a horrible person 😂 No one is a perfect person and expecting idols to not be perfect and to not make mistakes is definitely setting you up for disappointment.

The Japanese says, a human being has 3 faces. The first face, you show to the world. The second face, you show to your close friends, and your family. The third face, you never show anyone.
In a way, I believe this to be true. This what prevents me to "worship" any idols/actors/actresses...because sometimes when I see them on the screen, I would wonder about their "third face".

To be quite honest, I'm in my early 20s, but I've heard this kind of story a bunch of times before, and though I'm not surprised, it never fails to make me disgusted; being interested in fashion kind of got me through this stage of "deconstructing the glamour" before as well (with very similar situations). I'm into some medias that involve fan culture and it's just so necessary to set boundaries guys...

Oof 姐, even though I used to work in small production houses as crew in Singapore, these stories are so common in the industry.. After a while, you'll just realise that the world isn't that 'perfect'. Human are complicated, the best actor/actress could be the worse kind of person that is difficult to work with.. They are mostly different off-screen.

Hahaha I mean everyone should know none of the celebrities are exactly innocent. I stopped fantasying after I grad from middle sch because I realized the more you want to know about someone, the more of a diff side or disappointing things you will come across about the celebs. That's why now I rather fall in love with good dramas and productions than chasing after something that is empty.

I think the opposite is also true. Sometimes people forget that famous people are human too. Like working from home i have being really into podcasts and you can tell by listening to interviews with famous people that they are quite affected by things like Internet comments or random people telling them things on the streets not to mention stalkers, mean critics etc. ( and by famous people i am not only talking about musicians or actors but also CEOs and Nobel prize winners)
There has been cases of celebrities killing themselves due to stuff like this. Neither the two extremes are good the haters and the super fans.

Me (two minutes later): WTF is wrong with these people
Me (twenty minutes later): I’ve lost my trust in this industry and begins to question the morality of the stars who I support/supported…
    Near existential crisis… 🤮
BTW Thanks Avenue X for making this video for the younger generation. This is a reminder everyone needs, really even though one is older and supposedly wiser, it's still easy to have that bias that the actor or actress or whomever one is following might not be as bad or horrible, but one can never know for sure. We are never with them once the camera stops rolling. Every thing has to be kept to a minimum.
    Thanks for the video ☺️☺️

  • @foreverfriendsg

Thanks for this video! I've been in the kpop fandom since my teenage days and so honestly, such stories don't really surprise me anymore (though I still feel bad for the last actress). The Kris Wu case for me is "disappointed but not surprised", especially after the Burning Sun incident in 2019. AvenueX made great comments, we can support them but don't idolize them because we will never truly know who they are. It's better to spend time, money and effort on yourself and your loved ones, and treat celebrities like their industry - entertainment, something that makes you happy but doesn't completely take over your life.

I'm in my 20s now so I guess it fits the demographics of this video. However, I don't really obsess over people or characters as much as some and I agree with you on all those points. There was one streamed I watched pretty much daily/weekly on twitch, who turned to the bad side. I'm still kinda recovering from that since a lot of good memories come from watching his streams. What was sad to see though, was all the fangirls trying to justify what he had done as a misunderstanding or "not that bad" when in fact it was. People need to chill and let idols have their space and privacy. You can waste so much energy on so many other things.

I wish I could say I was surprised - but I've worked in the same industry for 10+ years, on set for three.
I've heard similiar things and - even worse - experienced them. It was awful - the sort of job that you think is a dream come true and then you notice that all the worst of humanity comes out. People buying off whole industries to get their favorite actress/actor new roles or even implanting their lovers in an industry they are clearly not suited for.
The worst I ever saw also involved someone just swapping out an actor mid-shoot. Was even worse because the two main actors were apparently friends, the whole thing was godawful.
The cheating-is-normalized thing is also something I experienced when I was working on set for a pretty big Hollywood movie - some of the crews had worked together for so long, they had an actual method of covering up for each other.
