I think they really figured it all out on this headset, PCVR for games and mobile apps for media consumption. They even talked about it as a tablet interface, and that's basically what vision OS is.
One of the primary reasons I got an AVP is the tight apple eco system, e.g. virtual display with low latency, apple cloud and apps in sync, photos, safari etc. I've been using mine every day since I've bought it for those reasons alone, everything else has been a bonus. This device seems cool but no eco system except if your tight into google and android but even then it's terrible compared to apple. Maybe given its' android windows might be a good natural eco system but again it's like an after thought.
People said the same thing about the apps on android when their smartphones first came out, comparing them to apple’s phones. They said they shouldn’t have copied what apple had built, but that disregards the old adage “ if it isn’t broke don’t fix it!” So if it works, then maybe it can be improved, but if it works well… then it doesn’t need reinvented.
Though I immediately noticed that: 1. There is no foveated rendering it seems. 2. Environments are just very simple (which is expected due to a limited chipset performance). 3. UI is like a cheap version of what AVP has: no volume, no shadows. Yet it's so much cheaper.
Sounds like a prototype if anything. Yet, promised to be "under $2,000". If they make a budget version of THIS with only 3K resolution for quality display, half the storage, and half the RAM for a far better price, ooooooh BOY!!!!
1. it uses foveation rendering(not the traditional one based on Qualcomm extension, but one called QuadViews rendering) 2. The scene may be more complex than you think, and the bushes in the distance cost a lot of performance (i know this sounds wasteful...) 3. Yeap, no shadow, but actually it support volume, some ui part has different z distance like the popup window.
@@marvyrvygarvy408 And exactly there I can see it doesn't. All the image across the whole field of view is sharp. Look at any screen capture from Apple Vision Pro and you will immediately see the difference.
Apple can't afford to make Vision Pro cheaper. They have an entire device ecosystem that would immediately become pointless if apple decided to give AVP the full functionality of MacOS someday. I'm sure apple didn't want to launch Vision pro so soon, but Meta forced their hand when they started offering $299 standalone VR headsets and boldly claimed that they were now a "Metaverse company". Apple couldn't hold off much longer after that point.
This headset has every potential to be the headset that VRC users would get, but its missing the full tracking feature that alot of them have been wanting for a long time aside from the discontinued Quest pro. If they decide to put that in im buying it day one.
I'm curious about what that xr2 chip can really do with screens with that high resolution. The Vision Pro has far, far higher performance than the xr2 chips can reach yet. I feel like if I played an FPS on that headset I'd still be running it at 2200x2200 or whatever.
I dont think this is meant to run standalone games, the gaming usecase is more PCVR & as a monitor replacement for consoles etc. Not to mention all the standalone games look like absolute dinkydonky toy games anyhow, resolution does not matter much if you literally do not have any textures.
I didn't catch which version they are running. Same as Quest 3? In most games, I can use Game Optimizer and increase the resolution because that chipset has headroom. That said, as the other commenter mentioned, this is probably more for PCVR gaming. Standalone, it would be great for movies, flat-experiences, and lower fidelity android xr stuff I guess.
They relay on the Eye Tracking to do Dynamic Foveated Rendering, so only the part of the screen you're looking is rendering at full resolution, the other is in low res. So that's the way they could use the full resolution of the panels.

While its a proper combination of parts/specs to be a true next gen VR headset (unlike the HTC Focus Vision), the only 2 issues I can see are the infancy of Android XR and the low FoV. For such a high resolution, the low FoV doesn't really take advantage of it. Yeah, high PPI is great but tunnel/goggle vision from a low FoV can ruin it.
from what we can see i actually don't think this runs android xr (?) i mean, android xr only got announced like a month ago so i dont think they would have been able to use it on this. but on other headsets (like project moohan) i really dont think android xr will be an issue because they have clearly been working on android xr for a looong time. the earliest public announcement was in 2023, and they were obviously working on it even before that. the reviewers who were able to get to use it also said it was good.
