It happens! I leaded that CZ 457 of mine up real bad back in the spring with Lapua ammo. So it's not just Thunderbolts that does it! Thanks for stoppin in Pat!
I bought one this year and man it's a real game changer.... a bore scope is highly recommended. I purchased one for my iPhone, under $80 and couldn't be happier.
Thanks Buffalo. Excellent video idea. You're right, I had never seen a leaded barrel from the inside like that before! That's amazing. The Thunderbolts leaded up my Ruger MK IV even worse than that. I couldn't even get a cleaning rod through it. Had to use a cleaning rod and brush made for a .17 caliber just to get it opened up enough for my .22 cleaning rod. I made the decision right then and there no more Thunderturds for me.
THANKS!!! 👌. That answers the problem I've had with my Rossi 243. I bought it awhile back off the floor at a big local gun store, they had 5 lined up and I picked one for $140. It looked new, I liked the design, awesome sites on it. First time shooting it, I hit nothing with the fancy iron sites even at 25 yards? I checked the barrel, ran a patch through it, black, went for the brush and extreme trouble getting a brush through it. I broke 2 rods attempting to brush it out. More and more lead, more oil, several patches later I begin to see daylight. I'm guessing the last owner never cleaned it, must have traded it in and the gun store guy never checked it out. It hits paper now but what a whack'o experience. To order a new barrel was $180, to have it regroved was $150, new cleaning rods $12. THANK YOU for doing that video and showing the bore camera and what "lead build up" causes, right down my alley with the Rossi 243 that looked new. I checked the barrel in the store and I checked it with my little led light when I got home from one end but neither showed anything like you showed with the bore camera. That's a $100 well spent and worth it, I'm getting one. That really confirmed my problem here, was a first time to deal with lead buildup. How anyone could allow a rifle to get that dirty, lol 👍👍
I'm a mechanic and have a nice snake cam from AC Delco and it can be lit and it has a magnifying option too. And it's a 6 foot lead also. I use the heck out of it for everything. Including as a bore scope
Good video and good information. You might want to go into how you cleaned the lead buildup out of the barrel. I shoot a couple .22LR pistols and then use a Bore Snake afterwards. If you have trouble getting the Bore Snake through, it is time to break out the brush and solvent.
Great job on cleaning all that lead out. A really informative video about something I don't think a lot about but maby I should. Like the borescope, have to get me one of those. Appreciate all your videos .👍👍
You are quickly becoming one of my favorite gun tubers. I can't handle the tactical channels anymore they aren't focused on avrage people anymore. Thanks for the good content. WHO TEE WHO is another that is doing good work.

That is a cool little device. I've seen the really big optical ones for artillery when I was still working on tracked equipment for the Army Guard. I used to watch them borescope the self propelled howitzers. Hoped you and all of your family was safe after those tornados down there. I genuinely feel for those folks in Kentucky that were hit. That's a scary situation as well as sad. Thanks for the new video. Take it easy man, and be safe out there. 😎
Those tornadoes destroyed a lot of lives :( I got lucky and only got a heavy thunderstorm but it sure makes me think about how quickly my life could be turned upside down.
I bought a Ruger Single 6 from a guy once really cheap. He sold it cheap cause he said you could not hit the side of a barn with it. Of course the barrel was leaded up. Best deal I ever got😀
Something I used to do was run some copper jacketed bullets as "cleaner rounds" to push out the lead deposites. It worked well. Even Hickok 45 has said he does the same thing. I no longer run full lead bullets in any gun.
Had the same issue with faster shooting of automatch and thunderbolt with a kel-tec p-17. Started carrying cci clean in my range bag and 10 rounds of that does great at blasting most of it all out.
The thunderbolts always lead up my barrels. I think it happens with the semi autos only. I just use those for revolvers or lever actions etc. They are not lubed and the lead is soft.
Very true. I gave all my "crappingtons" to my cousin. He tried using them in semi-autos (and I did warn him) with the same results, but as you commented, he just used them up in his revolver & lever action firearms.
rem thunderbolt are my go to because not all guns do well them and they are a very dirty round but if a gun can handle them it can handle almost any 22 lr
oh man, I was hurting so bad going down that rugged leaded barrel but that clean one made me so much happier. I don't know why. Must just be all that smoothness and cleanness. I must of had a bad child hood playground experience or something.
I bought a bunch of the thunderbolts a couple of years ago. I have 2 Ruger mark 3 and a Smith and Wesson 617 and they all did the same thing. I just thought I got a bad lot but maybe not. Great video as always.
Much appreciated! It's a mess out on the western end. Lot's of prayers needed for those who lost their homes and especially for the folks that lost loved ones.
Good video buffalo i had the same problem with my Glock 44 ibough some chore boy 100% cooper scrubber cut a little piece put it through the barrel with a chopstick couple times then use my solvent and a brush really easy and you don't have to spend hours scrubbing the barrel.
I have been shooting .22s for more than 50 years, and Thunderbolts are the only round that has ever caused leading in my guns! I still have some on hand, but I will probably use them for trading stock, as I have no plans to ever shoot any of them again!!!
my 22 magnum doesnt get build up but them are full metal jacket bullets where as a 22 lr is only a copper plating wich is thin exposing lead to rifling, i clean very often though on my 22 mag and 22 lr guns, this video shows you cant go wrong cleaning more often, nice to see just what can happen and maybe bulk ammo runs a little more dirty then match ammo, rapid fire with a barrel getting hot can have an effect also, my buckmark 22 i usually do a 2 to 3 shot burst then run to cover and shoot the next target, the pistol gets cool down time a lot, with a semi auto 22 rifle i do the same but i tend to shoot a little and let cool down a little wich drives some 22 lr guys nuts having a pause in my shooting or taking a couple shots then waiting a little for the next shots, a bulk pack lasts me longer then most people and i usually go for a good pace in my drills with emphasis on accuracy over speed using cover, no matter what 22 pistol or rifle getting training in keeps you physically fit, gives you sight pictures, help you press trigger at the right time and helps you with standing, kneeling, sitting and prone. many times i feel i am faster on target and more accurate with a 22 rifle then even my Ruger AR-15 in a defense drill, i look at it as speed, tactics and accuracy beating muzzle energy, the 22 lr doesnt have much energy but shot placements you see hunters putting on hogs shows that effectiveness with a well placed shot with camera evidence and no human is match for fighting a hog bare handed, so if it works on hogs, its no problem for defense but we train with the rifle as we would our AR -15 and even if we dont have a 30 round mag for the 22 lr rifle it teaches us how to use ammo better and how to fight better with limited resources
Great show as always. I wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. I am headed to Floyd County, Kentucky to visit my wife's people. God Bless
I shoot soft lead .45 Colt 250 grain cowboy loads using my Howell drop in cylinder in my Uberti 1858 new model army revolver and I always use a tight .45 caliber bronze brush in the bore and chambers every time I clean my piece and I always clean it after each shooting session and it helps a lot but there is always a tiny bit of lead residue in the grooves no matter what I do but my accuracy remains consistent with no keyholing. You can see my shooting video I posted on my channel of me using that piece with those loads in the cylinder with a flower pot as my target from about 10 yards away
Buffalo, I have run into this problem using this ammunition in a couple of my .22's. I did the Scotch Brite treatment on the bore to help end the problem. Watching your scope map the bore after cleaning you can see spots where the bore has some disfiguring spots. Try the Scotch Brite and I think the problem will rectify itself. Nice video. Stay Safe Oh yes, glad you were unaffected by the tornado's. TGD told me you were ok, Thank God!
Thanks! I Didn't know you could buy those. I'm going to have to get one, it looks really useful. I appreciate all your videos. Hope you and yours have a blessed CHRISTmas!
Good deal Buffalo. I also run a Teslong borescope but have the flexible camera, I understand they are coming out with different diameter mirror assemblies soon for the larger calibers. I also hope you were out of the way of the recent storms that ravaged Kentucky, take care and stay safe.
Buffalo, excellent video…of all the rimfire ammunition I have used over the years Remington Thunderbolts have been some the most problematic.22LR ammo I’ve ever used…they have leaded bores (much like your latest experience), had more failures to eject, failures to feed and are frequently underpowered as well as failure to fire…I’ve got an older BuckMark that will not function with them at all…same with my Remington Nylon and SIG 522…no issues with Rem. Golden Bullets, Federal copper washed bulk pack, Agulia Super Extra or any other manufacturer using a copper washed bullet for that matter (you will still have powder residue fouling after a day at the range, but not heavy and not leading)…I tended to shy away from using them in the good ‘ol days and I wonder how their QC is today with the need to increase production do to the shortage (that could be true with any brand for that matter)…I’ve been thinking about one of the budget bore scopes and this video made up my mind 😊 and thank you for the Amazon link 👍…Stay safe and well 🙏
This happened to my LCP2 lite rack .22lr . I had a moment of panic cause i though the rifling had stripped out of the barrel at first! Freaky strips of lead.
Thanks! The bought the hat from Eagle Six Gear. I have to have a 2xl flex fit for my big noggin. They are one of the few that offer them with designs I like.
Spectacular footage of leading inside a barrel, thanks Buff. I'll definitely have to budget for a bore scope. Do ya think I could moonlight as an Endoscopic Technician?
About 35 or 40 years ago, I was shooting lots of Federal Lightning .22 LR in a Ruger Single Six. They worked great. Then I purchased few boxes which had no lubricant on them. The bullets were completely dry. The bore leaded up real fast. I don't know how those left the factory without being lubed.
That was interesting seeing the barrel build up. I have a few bricks of that ammo and have been shooting it often. I’ve been having a lot of fliers. Maybe it wasn’t just me. Ha!! I’ll have to keep an eye the barrel.
That’s why I try to copper plated 22 when I can.I have the thunder bolt. My Ruger will shoot the fairly well. My heritage is a different story. Even though I clean it after every single use. I just the chaippi 1911 22 haven’t shot it yet. Because most of the ammo I have is thunder bolt. How about a shoot out between a 38 special and 45 LC . In the 38 special you can only use the following ammo 38 LC and 38 special standard ammo. You know you take the 38 LC and pull the bullet and add 3.16 inch to the case and stick the bullet back in you got the 38 special. Same on the 45 LC. Use the scoffield . Shoot out between 38 special and 45 LC in ballistic gel. Who far will they go. Which is better.
nice looking bore scope. Must be something with that lot of thunderbolts. I know they are not match ammo, but I have had good luck with them over the years.
Thanks. Yeah I have shot a lot of them too. They used to be cheap to plink around with and I can't really think of any other time they've caused problems for me.
Based on the surface finish of the cleaned bore, I doubt Walther cold hammer-forges those barrels. Probably button rifled. If you look at a CHF barrel bore it's like a piece of glass without striations or machine marks. Probably less probable for copper or lead to lay down, of course that is if the bullet and barrel are properly sized and no gas blow-by happens. Ruger CHF its Mark 4 pistols, would be fund to have a look down one of those bores after a thorough cleaning.
Here's my theory, 2 cents worth. Your pistol has a very narrow barrel. It also has a slide to cover it up. The ammo is probably better suited for rifles with longer barrels. Your low mass barrel heats up quickly as the powder still burns behind the bullet. the slide covers the barrel and slows it from cooling down. A soft bullet thru a hot barrel must likely cause some lead to melt off, from heat (gas temp is higher that lead melting point) and friction. Now not all theory. I had a Ruger Mark II 6 7/8" bbl, and ten magazines all topped off. I was curious as to how fast I could dump all those rounds, so I fired thru all ten magazines just a fast as I could. The barrel was smoking hot. When I went to check my target (11 yards), half of the holes appeared normal, and half the rounds had key holed. But the worst part was having to clean out the lead from the barrel, slow and painstaking. So normal firing does not lead up this gun, and if it gets hot, I set it aside to cool.
Very interesting, "in depth" video. 👍 Thanks, Buffalo I think that someone that owns several (or many) firearms and wants to maintain them, this item is very useful. My wife is buying me one for Christmas. I'll tell her about it later. 😜 Seriously, the cost is very reasonable. Considering a good cleaning rod alone costs $45-70. It will be nice to have this on my bench and run it through each bore after cleaning to make sure I got it clean
I love my Teslong borescopes - I got the rifle and pistol one but I prefer to connect them to my computer or phone. It also makes them a little cheaper. That being said, it would have been helpful in this video if you shot that Thunderbolt again to show the improvements after cleaning as well as what the buildup might have been like after 20 to 50 shots. I mention this because its possible you could have got a bad lot as I coach a youth shooting team and our kids go through at least a case of 22lr per week (5k rounds) so we have a lot of data on a variety of ammos. The Thunderbolts are one of the ones we consider fairly good, but they are part of Vista and we have had some serious issues with Federal Range Pack & Champion Training (automatch) in 22lr as well as Remington 9mm. Granted, we've shot tens of thousands of both without issue, but definitely the 1st and 3rd qtrs of 2021 had a lot of us getting ammo so bad we had to return it as we were getting squibs and other severely underpowered loads. It could be you have a really bad lot like we experienced.
Thanks for sharing. I am wondering if that was a batch of super soft lead. If you ever have it to happen again it would be great to see it leaded and then shoot a couple of coated high velocity rounds thru the bore then scope it to see if it pushes out some of that lead. I know it has been said but I am wondering if it really works.
Very good video to show what a leaded barrel looks like. I reload and powder coat my own however I have never seen what leading looks like. So I never knew what I was actually looking for. I figure I must be doing what I’m supposed to because all my guns shoot great. But I always wonder what it actually looks like. So thanks Buffalo for doing this video and schooling a guy on something. By the way I have a very similar unit myself mine has the flexible black camera but that same monitor. VERY good unit for the money I must say
I might be seeing things, but the bore on your gun looked a little rough to me, particularly near the muzzle end. I once leaded my G44 at around 1200rds, keyholed my last two mags. 500rds were Thunderbolts, 500rds were Armscor, and 200 were Winchester Supers, but I shot the Armscor lastly. It's weird seeing a target with sideways impacts. The bore scope is a handy tool. Thanks for sharing.
Looking at the clean barrel it looks like there is a pretty rough area down towards the muzzle. Do I see chatter marks ? I suspect that is why its leading up.
I've had the same exact problem with Thunderbolts. Two different guns, same problem. Nothing against Remington, one of my pistols shoots Golden Bullet very well. But those Thunderbolts seem to be terrible.
Very interesting video, and thanks for your closing remark on freedom
I leaded my Vudoo ridiculously. Bore Tech rimfire blend and an extended soak straightened it up.
It happens! I leaded that CZ 457 of mine up real bad back in the spring with Lapua ammo. So it's not just Thunderbolts that does it! Thanks for stoppin in Pat!

Glad you enjoyed it!
The inside of the barrel positively gleams in the 'after' pictures!
That was interesting seeing the barrel build up. I have a few bricks of that ammo and have been shooting it often. I’ve been having a lot of fliers. Maybe it wasn’t just me. Ha!! I’ll have to keep an eye the barrel.
It's always nice to have an excuse at the ready! ;)
@@buffalosoutdoors Ha!!! Me too
That’s why I try to copper plated 22 when I can.I have the thunder bolt.
Man that's some good stuff. Thanks for the great comment and suggestions.
nice looking bore scope. Must be something with that lot of thunderbolts. I know they are not match ammo, but I have had good luck with them over the years.
Thanks. Yeah I have shot a lot of them too. They used to be cheap to plink around with and I can't really think of any other time they've caused problems for me.
I have a box of 50 They won't chamber in my old Remington bolt achion like they are to big or hadn't been sized correctly
I don't think the QC is too tight on the Thunderbolts. That is odd that they won't chamber though.
What a badass video concept. Makes me wonder what I’m missing by not having a bore scope.
It's one of those tools I didn't know I needed until I got one! Thanks for watching!
Really is quite helpful. Very much appreciated. Good stuff. Thank you sir
Sure glad to see the storms didn't get you. Nice borescope.
👍 Thanks, Buffalo
I think that someone that owns several (or many) firearms and wants to maintain them, this item is very useful. My wife is buying me one for Christmas. I'll tell her about it later. 😜
Seriously, the cost is very reasonable.
Thanks you great video
I’ll have to get a borescope for Christmas! 👍👍👍👍
Awesome video thanks
Glad you enjoyed it!
That is a good idea.
Ty
Learned something new
Dam it Buffalo! Now I gotta go clean all my guns! LOL! 🤣Thanks for sharing! 😎👍
LOL! You're welcome! 🤣🤣
Really good stuff/// information.
I use a scrub brush, no 9, and jacketed ammo to clear my barrel out. Never hurt the barrel btw
Great video 👍 thank you....
You're very welcome! Glad you enjoyed it!
I’ve had that problem with the cheap stuff. Weather it’s leading up or just nasty with semi autos, now I pay more and shoot a little less 🤷♂️.
