Hey, pretty big Leica fanboy here. Have owned most of the M cameras (film and digital) at some point and used a bunch of great modern and vintage Leica glass. I think these third party M are great because it is giving people more ability to get into the M system. Getting a body and Leica lens is a huge financial commitment and without affordable glass, I am sure many people stay away, which is not what you want when thinking about the future viability of a system. Also, some of these companies (Light Lens Lab in particular) are recreating classic vintage Leica glass designs that are basically impossible for most to afford, such as 50mm 1.2. All of these help make the M system more viable and enjoyable for people that are not wealthy, which I think is fantastic.
That's very cool feedback.
So far, I"m a LLL fan myself. I have the 50mm Speed Panchro II lens they recently put out. It's great on my M10M, BUT...I love adapting these M lenses to other camera bodies too.
Right now, I'm using the LLL lens on my older GFX 50R which I have permanently set to the XPan panoramic aspect ratio. VERY interesting shots.
I'd like the 28mm focal length to shoot on the set up...and this may do the trick for me.
I like that you can basically adapt any M mount lens to virtual any mirrorless camera body...makes them the most versatile out there.
Excellent review, thank you! I've enjoyed my experiences with M-mount lenses on my Sony, and it's exciting to see new companies putting out quality lenses and hopefully building a reputation.
great review Dustin!! Thanks
Glad you liked it!
I like that there are now more options in M mount. I have Voigtlander, but the new ones are not so promising anymore. So, yeah, Thypoch!
I'm really interested in the perception amongst the Leica crowd for lenses like this.
@@DustinAbbottTWI as usual, the die hard Leicaists will never get a lens like this on their bodies, yet I believe many others will
Thanks for this. I would also love to see a review of the new Voigltander 28mm f/1.5 for M-mount. I really want an excellent 28mm for E-mount, so until Sony brings out a G or GM 28mm, my only options are the Viltrox (which seems pretty good), the Voigtlander, and this. The Voigtlander looks beautiful, and I've had good experiences with their lenses before, but I'm always nervous about buying wide-angle rangefinder glass for the E-mount because of the edge smearing that you see with some specimens.
That Voigtlander 28mm f1.5 also looks interesting. Can't wait to see reviews when it comes out.
It's been a little frustrating for me to get Voigtlander lenses (which I often love), as they don't have active distribution in Canada right now.
Very promising series! I like all the mechanical instrumentation.
Very nice attention to detail everywhere.
Great review as always. Fellow e and x mount shooter who would love to see more m mount lens reviews!
Thank you for the feedback. That does help.
Excellent review. Thanks.
My pleasure.
I am seriously considering purchase of this lens (thank you Mr. Abbott for your test). As nice as my Leica Elmarit M Aspherical 2.8/28mm is I can see further expanded use possibilities of this lens at f 1.4 and closer minimum focusing distance
Fair enough.
The recent 'trend' of affordable M mount lenses allow many photographers to enjoy the unique rangefinder experience, it is now a fact that 3rd party M mount lenses can easily compete with Leica M mount lenses in terms of overall image and bokeh quality without the expensive Leica price tag. Those who can afford to buy Leica lenses will continue to support the Leica brand, but I'm certain Leica now sells more cameras than ever before because of these 3rd party lenses.
I currently use a mixture of 3rd party lenses as well as Leica lenses for my M11, it is impossible to tell the difference between these lenses except I'm now able to have super soft bokeh from super cheap fast aperture M lenses which once only available to people with deep pockets, it's never been a better time for us photographers.
I think that is trade-off for most camera makers. The third party lenses do cut into their lens sales, but probably help move more cameras.
for sure, even zeiss's old M mount offerings from the early noughties are still superb
Interesting and thank you for taking the trouble to review this new offering. Given almost zero verifiable brand heritage and long-term in-service reliability history this is a curiosity but not ready to add it to my bag. Those holes drilled in the lens barrel (hyperfocal marks) are an ingress point for water and dirt under the sleeve. Very strong vignette. Sticking with Leica, Zeiss, and Voigtlander options.
I own a Sony and been shopping around for a 28mm lens with some character. I do have a M-mount adapter. Now this seems like a good alternative and maybe even better than the Laowa Argus 28 f1.2.
I definitely like this one better than the Argus, myself.
I've been looking for awhile for a 28mm "M" mount lens. I'd really like to see how this lens compares to the latest Voigtlander 28mm offering.
I had been looking seriously at that one, but this may be a better choice, and about $300 less.
I think I'll hold off till someone does the comparison which I'm guessing a lot of people would like to see.
Thank you for a great video...!!

There have always been a lot of Leica fans who used Zeiss lenses and later also Voigtländer. So, why not this one if it‘s good.
I no longer own a Leica M mount camera. For some time, I owned a 2nd hand M6 and just two, similarly 2nd hand lens, the excellent Summicron 50/2 & 35/2 Aspherical. Both were lovely.
That said, I strongly suspect that the overwhelming majority of those who are able to enter the expensive, though superb Leica M mount body portal, will remain solely with Solms made glass.
That's what I've wondered.
Gunna need to see this compared to a Summicron and a Summilux.
It would an interesting comparison. I don't have a Leica connection, so it probably won't be me.
since this lens is similar pricing to the 7artisans M28mm for Leica as well, a direct 1-1 comparison seems deemed/appropriate in this case and many enthusiasts like myself would be interested.
I can't make any promises, but I might be able to get 7Artisans to send me one.
I am definitely open to new brands, I own a M4 and an M-240 and don't own a single Leica lens, using Zeiss(35 & 50) & Voigtlander (90mm) and will probably pick up this Simera to complete my set
Enjoy. It's a pretty sweet lens.
Great review! Lens looks like a great addition to the m mount line up. Would love to see more Leica reviews!
I appreciate the feedback as I'm always evaluating what to say "yes" to for my channel.
The depth of field scale can be found on the old Alpa 50mm Macro Switar. A collectors lens now and very much in demand.
While I appreciate the great review I wonder how this lens would resolve in the corners of a Leica body without the thick cover glass of the Sony.
Perhaps, but my findings were very consistent with what the MTF chart suggests.
I appreciate your thorough and methodic approach for lens testing, which is on a par with that of Christopher Frost. However I have a problem with the interpretation of photos of the flat target. When the center focus is sharp and the corners are soft, are we witnessing a true lack of sharpness in the corners or curvature of the focal plane of the lens? Flatness and sharpness of the focal plane of a lens is paramount for document archiving, but for all real world cases it is not critical. I think it would be useful to add a photo of the target where the focus is optimized for the corners and then compare it with the center-focused one. If the corners are sharp and the center soft in this photo, it would indicate curvature of the focal plane, and if the corners are still soft it would indicate actual degradation of the sharpness of the lens out of the central part of the image. Maybe this has been discussed extensively elsewhere, but I would be curious to know your position on this issue.
If I see a result that seems really out of line with expectations, I will often do that. In this case, however, my wide open corner results were pretty consistent with what the MTF suggests, and real world images at infinity (where field curvature shouldn't be an issue) suggested the same.
Dustin Abbott testing is far more comprehensive than Christopher Frost.
From what I had in 1991, this is insane.
For sure!
This lens was tested on a digital camera with a UV, IR filter stack in front of the sensor, if this lens was designed for a film camera or one with a thinner filter stack, it will probably perform better in the corners.
Perhaps, but my findings were very consistent with what the MTF chart suggests.
can you compare this lens to the Loxia?
???? Which Loxia?
35 OR 21 THANKS

cant imagine a new company produce a lens better than voigtlander‘s 28 1.5,jaw dropping
It's a very nice little lens, for sure.
ill stick with Voigtlander
Voigt has very nice glass...but this lens does have very nice optics.
Not a fan of the infinity lock.
I think I'm with you on that. It just seems to add an unnecessary layer of complication
Testing wide angle M mount lens on Sony bodies is always problematic due to very thick Sony sensor cover glass. The lens would fare much better on Nikon Z mount cameras, and probably best on Leica M mount bodies.
Also, due to floating lens element design, using techart adapter will degrade image quality, as the adapter moves the whole lens front and back for focusing, rather than the proper focusing elements of the lens.
I did my test chart with a manual adapter, and I'm skeptical about your initial comment as my results are very much in line with what the MTF chart suggests.
You can find many tests and reviews on Philip Reeves' blog, and indeed the M mount lenses usually perform poorly in the corners on a Sony camera (there are some exceptions, especially the Chinese M mount lenses like the Laowa 9mm f/5.6)
@@shang-hsienyang1284 yes his blog is a treasure trove. Also Jim Kasson’s blog (a bit more technical)
It really depends on what kind of optical thickness the Thypoch was designed for and if this design is telecentric enough to minimize the effect of such. Though, saying the Nikon Z is much better than the Sony at handling M mount is misleading. Most recent comments on this topic from FredMiranda showed any difference between the two digital platforms is a wash.
