Returning from Dublin to US - Our Last Full Day in Ireland

  • The last full day of our Irish Road Trip, we start by checking out the flowers laid at a memorial for Queen Elizabeth's death, then rush out of the old mill stay in Bushmills to head north and east on the Antrim Coast.
We'll see Curfew Tower in Cushendall (with a fascinating history!), and pass through the Red Arch Tunnel. Next down the road is the ruins of the picturesque Red Bay Castle. We get hopelessly lost near Belfast Airport, but find our way to the M1, where we cross the Mary McAleese Bridge, one of Ireland's longest cable stayed bridges.
Then we'll head to the Dublin Airport car rental return and wait for the shuttle to the Carlton Dublin Airport.
After dinner and a night at the hotel, we spin into a panic over an earlier than expected boarding time for our return flight to the US! On the shuttle to the airport, we meet Garth Brooks fans from Denmark (Garth Brooks took over Dublin with five shows at Croke Park during our trip) and a bus driver who was also a Garth Brooks concert goer, all of whom lightened our mood.
At the airport's Aer Lingus counter, we met a supervisor who took brilliant care of us, calmed our nerves, and got us through the security clearance and customs process smoothly! We'll cue you in about US Preclearance from Dublin Airport (the source of our earlier boarding time, and link to a video to help you make your way easier than we did.
A little duty-free shopping, one last Guinness, and we were headed home, with Ireland forever in our hearts.

Your pike is my halberd. Enjoyable series, Belfast accents are thought to understand.

It sounds like you must have been leaving last year around the same time I was arriving in Dublin. I left from Washington DC on the 18rh of September 2022 and arrived in Dublin on the 19th, the day the Queen was being buried. I was a bit nervous as I had booked public transport to get me from Dublin to Belfast and then on to Ballymoney, but everything was running as scheduled. The US pre-clearance in Dublin is great once you figure it out, but pretty stressful the first time as you are essentially having to do security clearance twice and need to allow extra time. Ironically even though I am just getting over a trip to Sydney, Australia a few week back, I am due to fly back to Ireland on September 20th to catch up with family again. And on a completely unrelated note, I am a big fan of Chicago. Our regional Shenandoah Valley airport used to fly to Chicago until they changed the route to Charlotte, NC, and we flew to Chicago several times, mostly to check out the food scene. We also did a Lake Michigan circle tour a few years back which started and ended in Chicago and was a lot of fun. Keep posting!

@darkstorme37. Thank you for the comments!
Yes, we flew out on the 19th. The day we were flying to Dublin we woke up to the news of the Queen’s death. We also wondered if it would affect our trip. Everything went well.
We also had a panic attack over the pre-clearance but it did work well!
Chicago is a great city! Food and drink is one of the highlights of visiting!
The Michigan coast of Lake Michigan is a great road trip. Some beautiful smaller harbor towns along that drive.
On a side note: We recently visited Asheville NC. Stay tuned for future videos!
Safe travels for your Ireland trip!😀👍

Hi Guys enjoyed your videos to our island. May I ask do you have Irish or Scots Irish heritage?

    • @thissecondhalfadventure
      @thissecondhalfadventure  ปีที่แล้ว

We both have some indeterminate Irish in our family background- if we were dogs, we’d be mixed breeds, or what we call “mutts” 😂😂😊 Thanks so much for watching and commenting!

The garth brooks concerts were wild 400 000 out of a total of 7million as there was a huge contingent from northern ireland aswell.Yes it was mostly rednecks or culchies( i am a culchie so not a derogatory term for me) ,only 15% were actually from the Dublin area.If it was U2 for example about half the patrons would have been from the dublin area.

Good to hear from you @gallowglass2630! Once again, we learn something new from you! We would both be considered culchies! Researching the origins of the word, it reminded us of the origins of the term “Hoosier”- someone from here in Indiana!😊🇮🇪🇺🇸

I’m from Dublin and was at a Garth Brooks concert, it was fantastic. Had the cowboy hat on and everything. People from Dublin can be known as Jackeens (derogatory as implied a love for the British Union Jack flag)but we prefer to be called Dubs.
