Yes, exactly. Cold email and networking have gotten me more (aligned, high-paying) clients than freelance platforms have, but they're good to start out or get some extra cash.
Freelancer has to go down, People bot clients seconds after they place a job, so you will see 10 bids in like 10 seconds, and then you have the spammers, so you talking 50 applicants per job under an hour, Just a pointer 👍

Really helpful, Deya. Thank you. I started on Upwork and found them to be quite decent across the board (once I learned to recognise and avoid the overbearing scams). Freelancer, however, I'm not sure I'd put them in the same tier as Upwork, based on personal experience. 15 days wait for first payment to be processed (which turns out to be 18 days) and a KYC process that left me feeling I was applying for a Swiss bank account. Seriously over the top.
I think the best is to leave these platforms as fast as possible. Get experience, then get out. They all have toxic pricing cycles. They are a great way to build a portfolio though once you get it going.
Building wealth involves developing good habits like regularly putting money away in intervals for solid investments. Financial management is a crucial topic that most tend to shy away from, and ends up haunting them in the near future.., I pray that anyone who reads this will be successful in life!!

There is a con of Contra. The payment system doesn't work in every country. You may be able to use debit card, paypal, direct bank transfer for developed countries but freelancers from developing countries has no way of receiving their money.
@@SilhouetteTitan The only payment gateway looks like USDC, but any crypto activity from my place is not allowed. So it is not useful for me atleast. Hope the platform grows so much that payment gateways will be more easier.

Really helpful! Thanks for sharing. Can’t believe how much these platforms take, not to mention what you need to set aside for taxes. If you’re in the US, you’re losing almost half your income to taxes and fees. Sounds like you really need to rely on volume to make it work.

Been in Fiverr for a long time, I have no complaints except for maybe the amount of time that money takes to clear. Other than that I have made more money there than anywhere else. I play harmonica for people and also do photoshop/ai photo editing and custom posters, but since Fiverr is unpredictable, meaning sometimes I get 3 orders in one day and then no orders in a week, Im excited to try out Contra. I'm signing up right now :)

Upwork's fee model was similar to People Per Hour's. 20% initially, 10% in the middle & 5% at the end. This is not a confusing model & I'm pretty much ok with it, because fees only start to hurt when your project grows bigger.
Toptal: I applied today and they only accept people with 3 and 3+ years of at least experience. I got 2 so my application has gone on the waitlist. p.s: thanks for posting Deya :)

Toptal: is all about HR "street cred". you could be absolutely terrible F tier professional but if you worked for any big brand (Microsoft, Google ,. FB etc.) in any capacity, you'll be plastered on the front page. This is how they milk the big spenders. I've checked some of the people's "design work" lmao. absolute B tier work but she worked for some large company for 6 months and did 2 things so she's on the front page like she's a Michelangelo.
+1 a coworker is fixing TopTal "talent" code: at a very high rate the sent a person who drags their feet for weeks even for very easy tasks and "writes" random StackOverflow code.

I did the whole contra thing and it had a whole TWO jobs listed after I spent a couple of hours building a profile. Like, what? Just looks like they make money from selling you extra css as a feature.

Thank you for this video. After watching this video I attempted to register to Contra and sadly found, that in September-2024, things must have changed. Nowadays it will cost you $29(usd) per month to get access to jobs, community and so forth, otherwise wait in the queue for 4-6 week after you register and only then, maybe, you will get access to jobs. While you are there you are required to prepare a video showcasing your portfolio.
Looking at Freelancers to help complete a project I am personally working on. Basically shopping for subcontractors to speed things up for vector graphics design project. Thank you for the list of platforms to check out.
contests are great for getting real world work experience and portfolio projects to help you level up into better paid work and eventually become a full time freelancer. Even if you don’t win it’s great for those things, and it means you don’t always have to come up with ideas for mock projects for your portfolio on your own.
Yes, Toptal only accepts the top 3% of talent. However, they expect you to work for free until you're vetted and added to their network. That's definitely a con for me. I'm not saying their tier should change, but people should be aware.
The People Per Hour fees make complete sense. 10-20% of £250 isn’t much but if that applied on £5k+ it would be absurd. Tiering their fees down to a smaller percentage for higher value projects is very fair.

Thank you for this video. After watching this video I attempted to register to Contra and sadly found, that in September-2024, things must have changed. Nowadays it will cost you $29(usd) per month to get access to jobs, community and so forth, otherwise wait in the queue for 4-6 week after you register and only then, maybe, you will get access to jobs. While you are there you are required to prepare a video showcasing your portfolio.
Looking at Freelancers to help complete a project I am personally working on. Basically shopping for subcontractors to speed things up for vector graphics design project. Thank you for the list of platforms to check out.
contests are great for getting real world work experience and portfolio projects to help you level up into better paid work and eventually become a full time freelancer. Even if you don’t win it’s great for those things, and it means you don’t always have to come up with ideas for mock projects for your portfolio on your own.

Yes, Toptal only accepts the top 3% of talent. However, they expect you to work for free until you're vetted and added to their network. That's definitely a con for me. I'm not saying their tier should change, but people should be aware.
The People Per Hour fees make complete sense. 10-20% of £250 isn’t much but if that applied on £5k+ it would be absurd. Tiering their fees down to a smaller percentage for higher value projects is very fair.
