She willingly entered an arena where her performance would be judged, then she complains that she was judged on her performance. The negative comments are not from “haters” but from people rightly appalled at her miserable performance.
As a woman, we have to bring the very best. How did she not know this. More is expected of us anyway, to just break even. She brought shame on her country and on her gender. We can do better.
@@edvh88 it's not a gender thing though, she was competing against women. there's no "more is expected of her because she's a woman" no, she's expected to be at the level of the women she's competing against, nothing more.
@@ASDPOWERIt was a con job! Everyone needs to know that she formed the panel and made her husband the judge to get her into the Olympics. He disqualified all of the extraordinarily talented Australian dancers to put her forth. they deserve all of the criticism.
She was the only thing I saw of the Olympic Games but I laughed so much, she was well worth it. Anyway, break-dancing, as an Olympic sport? Really? Also, indirectly she's made this 'analysis' possible, and again, I was laughing out loud to myself at the 'battlefield' analogy @11:52 :)
That’s the thing. Anyone can be delusional about their talent, but they should be evaluated along the way and someone who’s not delusional should have stopped this along the way.
Criticism or an opinion you don’t like is not “hate”. Nobody hates her. People need to stop casually throwing the word hate around simply for being fairly criticized.
yes ! thank you. her ''dancing'' was beyond terrible, she had no skills in dance what so ever, most 3 year olds can dance better tan her, no joke. allowing someone that bad to compete ANYWHERE especially the world stage as the Olympics is a result of the era of the 90s and the participation trophy, choosing and awarding people; declaring them winners, calling them talented, or skilled when in reality they are not , raising kids, with false affirmations, telling them they are good at this n that when they are not in the spirit of ''boosting self-esteem'' and not hurting or crushing their spirit , its showing in the last 20 years or so how it has effected society and how peoples' mentality is in adulthood, how they act and carry and see themselves. this shit was absolutely embarrassing, and sadly, sometimes learning the truth and seeing reality hurts.
Very true indeed. Highly unlikely that an amusing dance would provoke hate anyway. However, in the unlikely event that someone decided to feel hate, This is not illegal, neither is feeling love. feeling hate toward a person is sad and regrettable but is not a crime as long as we do not harm anyone or express hateful or threatening comments or actions. The woke community is attempting to cancel all human emotions and passions. They are already succeeding in many areas of creating a suicidally depressing dystopia. Sigh. Anyway. Yes, agree with you 100% that criticising an endeavour is our right, and is natural, and is nowhere near the same ball park as the emption of hate. World gone entirely mad.
It’s annoying, here in Australia the media is defending her at all costs. Just say it for what it is- she is mediocre and shouldn’t have been at the Olympics, she looked foolish. There is nothing wrong with criticism of it’s warranted which it definitely is here
@@ZestySea comes with the territory online, she doesn’t deserve to be bullied obviously, what lies have been spread ? She clearly is not the best in her field in Australia, her selection is shady at best
Imagine not being able to perform “power-moves”, which is the standard, and still somehow qualifying for the Olympic’s. She doesn’t even qualify to be a victim
@@Peter-hz3vsnot just that, female breakdancing simply isn't as competitive as male breakdancing and in general women lack the strength and coordination to perform at a high level. They should've set the limit for females to 8, not 16 like the males. There simply aren't 16 females who can perform at a level that the public would deem "Olympic level" and on top of that she wasn't even the best that Australia she had to offer as she rigged the qualification process. @@mark123655 so you really think there's no difference between those two competitors and Raygun? Are you dumb or are you just being intentionally obtuse?
Online HATE is cowardly and just bullying, basically. However, as an Australian I think we are entitled to criticise someone representing our country who we believe dropped the ball and basically looked like a complete amateur. If a person can't deal with having the eyes of the world on them and the opinions that are bound to come with them, then don't compete in the Olympics. And seriously, not one part of that routine made her look like she knew what she was doing.
Another Australian here. Exactly online bullying is inappropriate however the majority of the comments from Aussies are the same. Childish silly performance at an elite level.
She managed to do a head stand which was the only time she even got close. But no head spin, or back spin or shoulder spin thing that we called the hurricane when my brother used have the piece of graffitied card board we'd break on back in the 80's and the twin cassette boombox when I was like 8 and competed in a town v town B boy gang battle and was better than her with my back spin, hurricane, snake and wavy arm thing lol. Back when there was the movies, "Breakdance" and "Breakdance 2 electric boogaloo". Surely there was a B girl younger than 37 that coulda out done old Raygun. If they spent 25 mil couldn't they have thrown some grant money for a trip to Sydney to some serious contenders. Had em send in some vid and get em to compete in the heats? I heard that she had some say in where money was allocated to get people to heats as there was some controversy that she was apparently involved in about some indigenous boys that didn't get a grant to get em there to compete and they wouldn't of even been completion for her. So who else to get the funding to get there?? So maybe it wasn't rigged in the way people have suggested, but it seems to smell fishier than the flailing fish outta water she was impersonating lol. So anyway, I'm sure there was a young B girl that coulda out done a 37 yr old who when it boils down to it. Had bugger all when it came to the B girl game. 🤷♂🤔
I always wondered how ordinary Australians feel about this. All the media seems to support her and against the "bullying". Sometimes it feels like we live in some bizarro world when you listen to mainstream media. I get it, as an artistic type event, art can be interpreted many ways. But while this is more of an artistic event, there is some athleticism and physicality associated with it. And her routine offered very little of that. And my main issue is she devalues the "sport" or "event" by what essentially seems like trolling for laughs. The person winning the gold medal probably doesn't feel as proud as they should, because someone else competing in it that clearly has little talent. It would be like if Lebron James was playing against 5th graders. And this will of course be a danger when you have more artistic type events with judges and whatnot. But as I mentioned above, it's not just about art, there is athletic talent associated with these "dances" as well.
She has tried earnestly to misdirect the conversation to "sexism" and "hate." Never once taking accountability for her own actions. You're right- the best thing she could've done is own up to it and have a good laugh.
As if you care about break dancing lol. And author of this video is from USA, you know, the country who had Trump and Biden as last 2 presidents.. talking about meritocracy ?? Lol
Yep, and you know what, that’s show a lot of heart, and most people would laugh WITh her then, not at her… instead of negative cry-baby stuff she’s doing now that turns people off, for sure.
Everyone says they wish the Olympics would throw in average people for entertainment value and to really show how incredibly skilled the athletes are by comparison…well, here she is! 💀
The funny thing is that if they had a part of the even that was judged as that, it might have worked. It sure looked like they brought in someone from a different sport to let them give break dancing a try. It looked like she was parodying everyone else.
As an Australian I am deeply embarrassed by her performance. She made a mockery out of Australia and every athlete who put in blood sweat and tears and dedicated their lives to their sport. Now we have the Australian Olympic Commission and even our prime minister telling us what a hero she is. Unbelievable.
It does not affect me at all other than finding it funny. She has copped excessive flak, more than necessary, which blew out to unfounded and persistent false rumours so that was unfair. Perhaps that's made her defensive. As I said, I laughed too. I think maybe she went out on a limb. Maybe it evolved after finding out how strong her competitors were, who knows. I saw a clip she showed of training in a gym - perhaps what she meant by worked hard, rather than on her routine.
Yes. It is, imo the most cringe, embarrassing thing that Australia has ever been famous for. To top it off, she's going to become insanely wealthy from it. Latest online news is her husband who is also her coach has ties to the Olympic Selection Committee. But how did she ever get to appear in front of them? I'm usually good humoured when people poke fun at Australia online, but this makes me annoyed every time!
I'm just going straight out state that her behaviour is narcistic & screams NPD. She, through her own admission, knew she couldn't compete so did something that turned herself into the victim & demanded people attentions, praise & accolades all whilst being a failure. Furthermore, she has taken the spotlight off real athletes from Australia who did extremely well & have turned their success into a mockery of our olympic achievements whilst also stealing the spotlight off the other breakers in the competition. Does anyone know who won the breaking gold. I haven't heard. I know there was a male competitor from Australia but I have no idea who he is or how he went. She has taken everything & gave nothing. The world's response to her is justified & she should be held accountable for her actions and for the performance.
You’re an amazing Psychologist to accurately diagnose NPD from this. Everyone throws around the word narcissistic like it’s candy at Halloween. Just stop.

Oh hey Kathy, l chat with you on VD’s channel sometimes. It doesn’t do the other person any good to indulge them in their delusion and not point out the obvious.. I think it’s better to be kind, kind people aren’t always nice, and nice people aren’t always kind. Had people been kind to “Dr Raygun” instead of being nice, then she wouldn’t have found herself in this situation.. Luckily she’s narcissistic, without any self-awareness, that will continue to protect her. She doesn’t appear to be genuinely upset in her come back video, she seems to be smirking, almost like Duper’s delight, she make sure to let everyone know she’ll be back in a couple of weeks, she’s building anticipation and going to milk this for all it’s worth, her micro-expressions seem like she can hardly wait until that happens, the little breaths that she lets out at the end of some of her words smack of superiority and delusion. She’s talking from a self-appointed place of authority, by saying “and here’s a fun fact..” What are your thoughts on her speech?
At my place of work one of the "nicest guys" at work always complains others aren't as empathetic as he. At the same time he's also one of the most passive aggressive people, holds grudges, simmers with resentment for being walked all over his life. The word beta comes mind.

Dr Grande, as an Australian, I want to thank you so much for your objective and comprehensive analysis of this unfortunate situation. This whole Raygun travesty has understandably caused so much anger and embarrassment. I've been saying for a couple days: if she would just come out and say "I went to the Olympics and I sucked!" she would instantly become way more endearing with the public than she is right now. In fact, she should get that printed on a t-shirt and just start wearing it around. I think that would be in keeping with typical Aussie humour.
She doesn't have to say it nor has had time to do since everyone is doing it for her. Enough already! She'll never be seen nor be back again. She's had her punishment if that's what people are looking for.

She did a great rendition of a preschool chicken dance to keep the kids occupied, nothing more. What she did do was make the world aware that breakdancing has no place in the Olympics.
It seems that Rachael Gunn suffers from the Dunning-Kruger effect; where she doesn't know enough about breakdancing to know how badly she performed in breakdancing.
Universities are now shameless. Here in Australia they pass foreign students who cheat and can barely speak English. Being woke counts for more than intellectual rigour. I hate to think what Rachel’s courses are like.
I think this is so infuriating because, as a professor, she was supposed to be fostering other peoples' abilities, and instead it looks like she just hogged all opportunities for herself.
i would like to know the committee who selected her and by viewing her routine thought this was technically above average to consider for the olympics ??
@@Jairogliphx Gaslighting is a term used to describe the manipulation of someone’s thoughts in an attempt to make them question their perception of reality. Incidentally Dr. Grande has done some videos on the subject, I recommend!

Rachael is of the generation when they started giving kids participation trophies and telling kids they're good at something even when they suck. I'm Australian, and not since Lay-down Sally has there been a "sports"-person this heavily criticised. The fact that she went to the Olympics, representing our country and brought that much shame on us is worthy of derision. Not only did she humiliate our country but she's also taking time and attention away from all the amazing athletes who turned up in good faith and brought their A-Game, whether or not they won medals or not (and there were plenty who did). She should be absolutely ashamed of herself, and now hastily forgotten while we celebrate the people worthy of remembrance for the right reasons.
At least Lay-down was able to row her canoe for 90% of the race before quitting. But Raygun will be a punchline for probably decades to come. Way worse than Lay down Sally!
Reminds me of Kim Kardashian who sent her daughter North-West to perform at Hollywood's Lion King musical few months back. North-West didn't prepare for it at all.😅😢 North-West - and by extension, her parents - treated the professional Broadway performance as a public karaoke performance.

I really hate how someone like her can become famous for being below average at what she attempted. This has become a recurring trend in the age of social media where talentless people are routinely rewarded with fame, fortune, and opportunities.

Apparently there are a lot of young people into breaking but her and her husband were involved in the group getting together the competitors for Oceania. So it could be corruption and/or nepotism where they didn’t advertise the qualifiers in communities with breakers, and they would have known where they were in the country since they were both into that culture. Informative impartial and factual! As an Australian whose been pretty disappointed with Mrs Gunns reaction to her abysmal performance its nice to see things laid out so clearly. Definitely a new subscriber.
Ray Gun seems pretty narcissistic about the mess. I don't wish her ill wishes, but with her attitude about embarrassing herself, her country and the sport, she should abandon the public life immediately, she should apologize for gaslighting her competitors and admit the technical skill to be there she does not possess.
I could only find a one minute clip of her routine and I couldn’t even finish it. It was painful. What surprises me most is how Australia, a powerful nation, chose her to represent them.
I couldn't agree more, a simple apology like "I'm sorry, I thought I was being cute and funny knowing I didn't have the skills to win" would have went so much further. what makes it even harder to swallow is seeing athletes like the marathon runner from Bhutan who came in last giving it all she had.
She does have some skill if you watch her actual full performance. She was just nowhere near as smooth and powerful as her opponents. She should have said she did her best to represent her country by trying to compete in areas she thought she would do best and which would be fun, but her opponents were just too good. Which is all true. This has been blown out of all proportion, probably mainly by people who have never actually competed at a decent level at any sport.

That's actually 25% right. There are elite athletes at the Olympics, but it's a not a best of the best of the world competition. Only 2 competitors from a single country are allowed in any one event. For example, if the top 10 cyclists were 5 from France and 5 from Spain we wouldn't see the top cyclists in the world competing. We'd see the top 4 cyclists and everyone else. It's not for fun and jokes, though. It's an exercise in global unity, cooperation and competition. It has it's merits but it's not the end all award of any sport, really, despite how it's been touted culturally. To be clear, anyone who wins a medal, or even competes (seriously competes; present company excluded) in the Olympics are vastly more talented than I am and should be proud of their accomplishment. I'm only pointing out that the full pool of the most elite athletes in these sports are often not on show.

@ragnardanneskjold7675 I get it, history is hard, but we're gonna make it easy today, cool? Alright, so the 50s REALLY started the whole "participation trophy" rhetoric in all honesty, due to the economic prosperity of the middle class. That led to those children who are now adults in the late 60s and 70s to grow up to be self-centered and entitled (which is why you see so many boomers today still act that way). And that's where the "opinion bad, must be bullying" mindset really started forming.
Australian here. I am so embarrassed by her. We have a culture and saying here of “giving it a crack” meaning trying your best. In a post “battle” interview she said this: "I was never going to beat these girls on what they do best: their power moves," Gunn said of those competitors in her group. "What I bring is creativity." Gunn said all of her moves were original and that she was trying to be as creative as possible. "Creativity is really important to me. I go out there and I show my artistry. Sometimes it speaks to the judges, and sometimes it doesn't. I do my thing, and it represents art. That is what it is about," Gunn added. No mate. Just because you know you can’t win doesn’t mean you screw around. You try your best. It’s like being in the 100m sprint and knowing you are a full second behind your competitors best. So you decide to skip down the lane? No you run your best. It’s a slap in the face to your country, the games, and mostly the other competitors. Just shameful. Then to cry about your pathetic performance. Very disappointing.

As an Australian, she is not a breakdancer of any position. She was embarrassing and has become a laughing stock. She just threw herself all over the floor without anything that resembled choreography. Whoever told her she was good enough has misled her into thinking that she's better than she is. That's my opinion 🇦🇺
As an Aussie, I am wondering how she got that far to begin with. You would not have this happen with our swimmers or any other categories no? I just think of the tremendous sacrifice that the athletes have made over years to get to the Olympics and contrast with her entry… it does not smell right.
She is a perfect example of what happens when you are never told no. The Olympic committee has said that they will never have this event again thanks to the joke that her and her husband made of it.
I feel bad for Molly, the real Australian break dancer who was "beat" by Rachel in qualifying battle. THERES NO WAY anyone who has ever seen breakdancing could mistake what Rachel did as breaking.
The AOC also said that DanceSport Australia and athletes received no federal government funding, and the Australian Olympic team for Paris was fully funded by the AOC with no federal taxpayers' funds involved

She's going to benefit enormously in her academic career writing about this event.
You're right- the best thing she could've done is own up to it and have a good laugh.

love this channel. This is by far one of most brutal, straight faced, fact based take downs of the situation.
That’s what happens when parents praise their kids for being perfect at everything
“Just a reminder I’m not diagnosing anybody in this video” yeah doc well maybe this time you should
She's going to benefit enormously in her academic career writing about this event. She has already got a published paper on the topic, relevant to this discussion, suggesting why she may have thrown the match. Her PhD on breaking has allowed her to work as an academic and secure a good income for life. She may be one of the few people in the world who has leveraged break dancing to make a good income actually. The irony.
It just goes to show how useless higher education has become, when someone can get a PhD in something so useless.
Her next paper will be titled, "Decolonising Meritocracy : Why the worst competitors should get the medals".
This is the worst part for me. People continuously reward the most entitled, destructive members of society. She’s the human embodiment of “failing upwards”.
A friend [female] with a real PhD in Chemistry calls a PhD in break dancing a "doctorate in Advanced Wankery".
@@terryandvalda Spot on. Universities have been overrun by departments specialising in pseudo intellectual bullshit.
The unmerited hubris of this woman is of olympic proportions.
An irony not lost on Australia, believe me!
She could earn a gold medal in that alone.
Well said !
😂 observation of today's society 😢
I am so glad that I listened to this podcast in full. Dr. Grande had me concerned temporarily, but his judgment and logic rose to the surface as always.
Very well presented sir!
I saw her breakdance routine. I thought it was a hilarious piece of Performance Art.
Interpretive dance story
Looking in from AU, it was hilarious, but not exactly what we wanted. =)
That performance was borderline disrespect to Breakin
If so, it had no place in the olympics, because Rachel took the place of another person who really wanted to be there and had better talent.
it was not art by any stretch of the imagination. it was just goofy random movent that happened to have music playing while she looked like a spastic.
At first I just thought she has no shame.
She doesn't, but it's more: she's on an ideological mission against meritocracy.
Hahahaha
11:50 "blown off the battle field"..."extinction level event" 🤣 Pure Dr. Grande gold, delivered in signature deadpan style!
Resident Breakdancer: Extinction
I laughed so hard there 😂
Excellent analysis !!
