    I used this pattern from this tutorial to make my first quilt. I used clothes that were my mother in laws. For the sashing I used her jeans. It turned out so well. I would not have had the courage to do this without watching these videos. I also followed the machine binding tutorial to bind the quilt. Thank you so much for these wonderful tutorials. I am so grateful.

    If I'm not mistaken, I think you can chain piece the 5 in. squares to the 21/2 in. strips then cut them apart the same way as the falling charms quilt. I finished the falling charms quilt yesterday and I love it!

    So cute. And since i LOVE blue it is right up my alley. Bonus i just got a brand new Baby Lock Amanda machine and it sews so beautifully. Worth every penny. I am happy to sew again after struggling for several years with a cheap machine.

    I made this last week and it's the most gorgeous thing - I did five charms across by six down for a lovely cot sized quilt. The only problem is on washing, the charm squares have shrunk a lot more than the white strips I used, so there's quite a bit of puckering along the white bits. Let's hope the quilting process will hide some of that!

    I could watch Jenny all day long. The camera just loves her. Such a great teacher. She was the first quilter who made me believe I could do this. It was the one where she races to sew the jelly roll together that got me.

    I love this! But I'd need to make it bigger. I'm math - challenged, so I have no idea how to get this to, say, a 88" x 90. When you post the instructions, maybe you all could do the math and product numbers for me...or us. I'm not the only one who hates quilt math. Love this and so many other projects.

    • @lindsaymckinley5407
      @lindsaymckinley5407 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      3scifimom If I have trouble with math I sketch it out on graph paper and figure out themeasurements that way. Each block finishes 4.5 inches and sashing finishes 2 inches so a "block" measures 6.5 inches finished plus an additional 2" sashing on the end gives you a row or a column.

    • @ktmint8495

      Great idea. I too am math challenged without my calculator

  • @ladykayla7417

    You could get a similar effect with a disappearing 9-patch, I think. If the middle square & corner squares are all patterned ones & the others are white (or whatever you want as the sashing colour). You'd probably still have to do a "small square & sashing" inner border, if you see what I mean. I wonder which would be "easier" or faster. I suppose it would depend on what the individual crafter prefers working with, larger or smaller pieces.

    • @ladykayla7417
      @ladykayla7417 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      And now I read the comments, I see several others with the same idea! *grin* Great minds and all that!

    I just did the math using the PDF file for this quilt. I see the 69" for the width. But I cannot figure out how you are getting 82" for the length! Going down: I count 9 of the 5" squares, 12 of the 2 1/2" strips, and am guessing you used a 6" border. Taking all the seam allowances into account, I get (9 x 4.5) + (12 x 2) + (2 x 5.75) = 76 inches. What am I missing?

    • @judyward03
      @judyward03 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I figured it out. The PDF file only shows 9 rows with squares going down, but in the video Jenny counts out 10 rows.

      40-42 Mona. 😁 there are usually duplicates (2) unless the description says otherwise. It will usually have all the patterns from one colorway for the design name. You should be able to see each pattern on one of the views that shows them all together. I usually take a photo of the entire set so I can match colors for the backing and/or one of the borders. Sometimes I use the 10” layer cakes (especially if they are on special) and cut them in fourths to get the equivalent of 4 packs of 5” squares. If you see a layer cake for $25 or something & the charm pack is $12 ($48) and cut it in fourths, you get your charms for $6.25 each and usually have 1-2 (depending on the pattern) left over for another project! 😀

    Thanks for a comprehensive tutorial. What size quilt does that pattern make? I know 69"x82" but does that equate to a Twin or Queen bed size? I'd love to make it however Australian bedding sizes are different and because we use metric measurements, it can be confusing sometimes working out the size charts. I certainly don't want to buy too little (or too much) material from you lol.

    Hello Jenny
    Wish you and the whole of MSQC family A Merry Christmas.
    I am training a batch of ladies how to make quilt blocks. And I think this is a suppperr easy block for a beginner's team like ours. I call myself a seasonal quilter as I hardly have sewn 10 quilts in the last 5 to 6 years since i started. It was a difficult journey for me but trying it make it a better one ( if not easy) for the ladies from the community who come from a very under privileged background.
    Thanks to you and your team for making such beautiful tutorials💗

    First of all, you, Jenny, are the best quilting teacher ever! You speak clearly, you don't mumble, or whisper - everything is just perfect. Plus, your sense of humor is a hoot! Okay, one question: I've been quilting for about 35 years, most of them for family, etc., but now I'd like to make an oversized king quilt for us, and I'm thinking of using Layer Cakes instead of Charm Packs. How many cakes do you think I would need? I'm sure I could figure it out, but I needed to write to you anyway, telling you how much I've enjoyed your tutorials. Thanks so much.

    Stank you Jenny. You are the fist to mention the pinked edges. It is a pain when you are using different manufactures and some of then are pinked and the others aren't.

    I've been watching you for a few years and have learned a lot. However, I just watched this same quilt being done by the Gormet Quilter and I must say she makes it look a lot easier. She eliminates the need for the long strip that makes for a lot of seam matching which for me is a pain. :-)

    Also, thank you for clarifying the measurement with pinked edge. I am learning to quilt and have been including the pinking in my quarter inch seams. Now I can do it correctly!

    I feel like I would find it easier to do this as a disappearing 9-patch and then add the extra sashing to the side and bottom afterwards. I think it would be less cutting but I'm not sure

    Just ordered cosmic fusion from Northcott to make this. How much yardage is needed for the binding?

    • @MissouriQuiltCo
      @MissouriQuiltCo  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You will need a yard if your quilt comes to 69"x82" and you use 2.5" strips for your binding.

    Does the yardage for the outer border include the binding as well? Or do I need to order more yardage for binding? Thanks!
