DeepSeek’s new AI model is more than a Sputnik moment

- DeepSeek’s release of a new AI model has stunned the world and changed the global AI landscape. As Chinese companies like DeepSeek innovate, Fareed argues that a new global arms race centered around AI could be on the horizon.
It's just too difficult for the West to comprehend or accept the fact that China is now far ahead of the US in technology, except in very few areas.
At least in pure AI ability, the US compensated its software weakness with higher performance chips ... manufactured by companies from other countries
This is an overstatement. In terms of AI talents, America is still in the clear lead. But the hostile attitude toward open source development and knowledge sharing will curb US AI’s attractiveness to the global tech elite…at least it symbolizes some betrayal to the open and free tech community concepts that made Silicon Valley what it is today
@@mikecheng6010probably. But China’s infrastructures are at least 30 years ahead of US.
@@mikecheng6010silicon valley though was never free, unless u mean monopolizing the world on good talent and large amount of captial. you generalizing too much and no china is indeed ahead on all except semiconductors.
Their propaganda works very efficiently in keeping people away from the truth of today's fast evolving world outside of their countries.
Soon China will be producing all the CPUs, GPUs and NPUs they need as well as their own software operating systems and applications (as they already are to a certain extent). Then the world will have two options, the US ecosystem (Apple, Microsoft, Google) or China. Based on how the world trade has been trending the last 50 years I'm quite confident what choice will be made and that will not favor the US. Africa, Asia and South-America will soon have more options where the US will not be able to listen in and use all the information for their own benefit anymore.
Note that all three western operating systems and even most Asian operating systems are derived in whole or partially from AT&T Unix. Because the designers of all current operating systems "borrowed " from each other they are almost identical and highly optimized.
But the Chinese method how to produce could be different. Even this time cheaper and more efficient. Now, an ASML machine weight as much as two Airbus A320! Of course the Chinese will have success…
American wake up! While Silicon Valley tech firms have been busy to fire tech engineers, the Deep Seek has bombed out US AI moat!🤣
LOL *Cough cough* Bhuhlshyte! China CANNOT "produce all the chips it needs" because it LACKS THE NECESSARY GLOBAL SUPPLY CHAIN AND EXPERTISE OF OVER 55 COUNTRIES!!! All your semiconductors are a joke!! LOL Just like everything Chinese, it's a cheap knockoff that barely works and hopefully doesn't catch fire.🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 💨💨🧯👩🚒 🔥🔥🔥🔥 💨💨🧯👩🚒 🚒🚒 🚒 🚒
Deepseek is a side project for a multi billion hedge fund that uses AI for high frequency trading. AI Efficiency is paramount for making money in split seconds. Most US hedge funds would never release their own AI to the world for free even if they have deepseek level of AI for trading.
Thank you for releasing this factually deep video. This is much better than a video full of conjecture and rheotric

Let me tell you the truth: there are more than 1400 AI companies in China and deepseek is only one of them. The AI competition essentially is talented people competition. In China even middle schools pupils already start learning differential equations. US can't beat China in AI no matter what restrictions and controls are used.
Old story. You get rich, fat, and lazy and the hungry, skinny, highly motivated take your place. From a global perspective, Americans are like spoiled teenagers who get whatever they want, have no idea where it comes from or who really pays for it, and whose world view is only as broad as the interior of their mother's basement.
To understand differential equations, one needs to have mastered college algebra, including basic complex numbers, analytic geometry, and Calculus A and B. I don’t think that that material is adequately covered in middle school anywhere.
I know that Chinese schools are far ahead of American schools, but I don’t think that they are that far ahead.
@@jstasiak2262 When I came to the U.S. for post graduate study, I was astonished that my american college roommate was leaning math that I learned in primary school.
@@jerryfrcc
Mathematics education varies widely in the United States. Many American high school students don’t know basic algebra and require remediation in college. Most American students don’t even take calculus in college. I entered college proficient in college algebra, analytic geometry, complex number theory and calculus A, B and C. There were some, but very few, other students with my level of preparation.

We let monopolies flourish while I heard that China cracked down on their tech monopolies a while back. If our tech platforms were not given the chance to monopolize and decide who wins and who doesn't like Senator Kloubachar said that they can essentially pick winners and losers, I bet we would have had far more innovation. Many times innovation becomes a threat to these big tech companies and they need to eliminate any real chance of competition just so that they can remain ahead.
Biden had a speech where he feared that we are becoming a land of oligarchs. My answer was that you surely could have prevented that when you were president but didn't.
In USA, once a company is dominate an area, it will try to kill or buyout any potential competitor; while in China, when a company is dominate in one area, there will be 10 or more companies working hard trying to surpass the dominating company.
That is why you don't see any new innovation from companies like Google, TH-cam, Facebook, amazon, ebay, yelp, netflex...
You're absolutely right. Chinese have said this explicitly. By controlling and preventing the appearance of tech monopolies, China has created a thriving ecosystem of highly competive small tech companies that compete against each other and are constantly innovating. Their tech sector is much healthier and much more productive than the US sector as a result.
Biden is an Oligarch himself through and through. Never believe a politician when he says he's on your side. You're simply not in their club.
❤An accurate assessment.
The thing is monopoly is far worse in China than in the US, a few super-apps takes 90+% market share in China. What's more, it is the state-owned coporations dominate in many areas, no private companies is allowed into these sectors.
Deepseek and others in China are using Huawei AI Chips right now.
❤
unbiased reporting is very refreshing..

3:54 Not exactly what I would call "unbiased" There is always the talk of stopping China's progress, even if it's in passing
@@Darkmatter321- agreed, less biased but still bias
90% agree. =) finally a critical analysis without China bashing - the slight bias is understandable because as Americans he wants America to be the best, as would/should anyone from any country
that is very rare for CNN , so enjoy the moment
DeepSeek has just contributed an idea that could give people worldwide affordable if not free access to AI. A thank you is not too much to ask for.
Deepseek is why I am now paying attention to AI. I have asked lots of questions and all the answers seems to be correct. I also love the way it explains stuff for the layman to understand. Compare that to Google sending me links to my phone so that visit their page for more ads and tracking.
Giving people affordable and free access to AI is a bit like giving people affordable and free access to nuclear weapons.
@@sieteocho No, more like smartphone.
in fact, chinese AI scientists have been saying that the bet on AI development based on hardware development is a wrong direction.
Cooperation is always more successful than confrontation.
nvidia, intel, qualcomm etc are losing their biggest market. legacy chips help fund research . soon china will flood the mkt with low cost legacy chips and will also make their own high end product. before they were happy to just buy from us. such a short sighted policy on part of usa

In 2022 all the westerners said YMTC would be out of the game in storage by 2024. Well its 2025 and they are now producing locally at the level of industry leaders. CXMT recently made a big leap in memeory they were not expected to reach until 2026/2027 by western analysts - they reached it at the end of 2024. Still behind yes, but catching up fast and much faster than expected. In terms of Nvidia chips, at the end of 2025 they wont be needed.
Also quite a lot of rumours regarding a EUV fab being constructed right now for Huawei from people in the know. Dont be surprised to find a 5nm chip in a Huawei phone at the end of the year.
It is not surprise it is the era of Asia century
This is a very sad admission that the US is no longer competitive in any of the cutting edge technologies when all it talks about is cutting China's access to various things and imposing sanctions. This is how Tania Harding approached her competition, and of course she lost
Just so that others know who you are referring to - it is Tonya Harding. When Huawei's CFO was arrested in Canada at the behest of the US, I commented that the US is adopting the Tonya Harding strategy for competition. But as I thought about this more - Alstom of France, Toshiba of Japan and Huawei of China, it dawned on me that it is Tonya Harding who learned from the US regime, instead of the regime copying Tonya Harding.
American wake up! While Silicon Valley tech firms have been busy to fire tech engineers, the Deep Seek has bombed out US AI moat!🤣
It appears that we should all be rooting for China and aligning with the Chinese economically. Better China than fascist America.
❤Well done Deep Seek. You have changed the WORLD for the BETTER. AI begins NOW. The rest was just a SIDESHOW.
Just look at the current situation of America, it is not hard just to admit that America is collapsing.

If only the US universities enrolled students for education rather than making money…
The entire deepseek team were educated in China
Even then you are still short!
The only question is why we weren't the ones to pull this off; another sign of the fall of the American Empire.
WHAT??? WE DID "PULL THIS OFF"!!! WE ORIGINATED AND INNOVATED WHAT THEY ARE TRYING TO SHODDILY RIP OFF!!!!
In China, STEM is a huge focus in their education system, while the US stands out with some pretty unique college majors; think Golf Course Management, Puppet Arts, Amusement Park Engineering, Comedy, Auctioneering, Bagpipe Performance, and other offbeat options. It’s a pretty wild contrast!
So, worst-case scenario, we're looking at Terminator without the robots.
it exposes the wall streets over valuation of their companies!
Westerners still thinks China is poor. 😂😂😂
yes, China is really poor. The Chinese military envies the military spending of the United States very much.
@@shixj7895 Sun Tsu: To win a war is best not to start a war. The US can go spend all it wants on military. China will put the money to good use such as development and innovation. All China needs to do is just make the US too scared to cut military spending. One day the debt will drown the country without the need of China to go war.
DeepSeek is just one of AI companies in China, and also it is not the best AI model in China because other Chinese AI companies or research labs just not release their models due to different reasons. The rest of the world is overreacted to the DeepSeek model. The big coming impact on AI development in China this year will be from Chinese chip companies when they deliver the advanced GPU/CPU to chines AI market.
More than 10 models have been released in the past 12 months in China, including some from Alibaba.
Cooperation among nations, not monopoly by one nation, is the only way AI can be regulated for the good of humanity.
Which is why that's never gonna happen.
More restrictions, ban and sanctions would make China more and more innovative and resilient. Necessity is the mother of invention.
There is no way out. This contest can only be settled on the battle field.
The only way for the U.S. to stifle innovation in other regions is to flood the market with its own cutting-edge technology at low prices, making it far more expensive for other countries to develop their own than the potential profits they’d make. But instead, by imposing sanctions, the U.S. has actually given Chinese companies a huge advantage. With no foreign competition, Chinese firms can invest in R&D without worrying about costs, knowing that whatever they produce will be accepted in the domestic market-no matter the price-because U.S. companies aren’t allowed to sell there. Sanctions against China are a terrible strategy; if anything, they’re only speeding up China’s innovation.
DeepSeek is making themselves better and better not competing with anyone. It is only good as an open source to those whom needs it and the best Hong Pau China gift to the world. Thank you DeepSeek the saviour. Wishing all a Happy Spring Festival in The Year Of The Wood Snake
Ok Trump will take care everything because we voted for him.

The future warfare is mostly about drones and bots. So whoever produce more and better of these win the war barring a nuclear war. But still I hear so many people arguing that China doesn't have war experience. These people still live in the ww2 era.
A Chinese robot dog equipped with AI and operating without any legal limitations is a real concern. The US and China should engage in an honest dialogue about the use of robot soldiers in future wars.🥶🥶
Well, the US generals and admirals have been talking about going to war with China all these years - even telling their soldiers to aim at the head. And even talking about Hellscape - massive swarms of drones.........

AI is not going to benefit the average person. It will just make the wealthy even wealthier.
Your comment applies to the US - given its focus on profits and price gouging. In China, there are AI hospitals benefiting the average person. And AI has enabled EVs to be produced at a fraction of the cost of Tesla and benefiting the lower income group.

Dangers ahead are not easily confronted by a divided World.
It’s a very good question…
The AI arms race - the so-called 'race to rollout' - is the big problem. This 'be the first at any cost' mentality will mean that potential risks and harms will be side-lined. Currently, the gap between spending on AI development and spending on AI safety measures is 1,000:1. Our first encounter with AI - 'curation' AI, or social media - has been a failure. We haven't even begun to address the problems it's raised: misinformation, filter bubbles, manipulation, mental health impacts, etc. And now we're racing ahead with 'generative' AI, which has already passed the point of being under our control. The problems will therefore multiply exponentially, and quicker than ever.
"There are questions ..." Yeah. Like how can Chinese dare to be smart and ever beat Americans?
At some point it will be smart enough and released open source(brain in box), and then fully baked

These bans will be irrelevant in 5 years, China will produce chips on par with best western ones. They catch up in 10 years : when the West was already making micro chips they were still an agricultural economy.
I rarely agree with you so thoroughly as on this issue, Fareed.
It is time for the United States to accept the fact that China is a peer power. The idea of sanctions on a peer power, who is superior to the US in many areas, is nonsensical. How do you sanction the only country that has the complete industrial system, in every category? How do you block a country that is the biggest trading partner of 140 countries in the world and the second biggest trading partner of many of the remaining 50 countries? How can you stay technically superior to a country which educates many times the number of scientists and engineers and mathematicians than you do?
The US should accept reality and stop this nonsensical "competition" with China. Competition is just a code word for cold war. DeepSeek is not a Sputnik moment. DeepSeek is a wakeup call to the US to abandon its fantasy of "leading" the world. The US needs to cooperate with China to solve the world's problems.

Spootnik.
China has something the US doesn’t and that’s an over abundance of technology easily available. The US lost its Fry’s locations a few years ago, that’s Fry’s fault, but regardless those locations should have been both tech supply warehouses as they were, as well as training institutions. Don’t lock that knowledge up in colleges. In the 2000’s “makers” were a popular group, they aren’t now. It’s a pain to get a fair deal on a hard drive in major cities now as an individual without Fry’s, it was infrastructure. In China there’s chips falling from the sky. Amazon is a poor substitute, Best Buy gouges on prices and has poor selection. We need something like a Fry’s plus classes in every city and in suburban areas and that’ll help on innovation

This is just the beginning, China will develop its high-end chips soon. By then, China will have both the software and hardware advantages which will make it difficult for the United States to compete with China 🇨🇳 No one can be the top dog forever. At some point, the US needs to come to terms with the reality: the US hegemony is over. China is unstoppable and cooperation is good for the world.
American wake up! While Silicon Valley tech firms have been busy to fire tech engineers, the Deep Seek has bombed out US AI moat!🤣
america talks a big game, china does not talk, china just acts and goes to work. china is already surpassed usa in many areas. america talks about their economy as best in the world due to GDP of 2%, but what is that GDP based on? it is based on consumer spending. is consumer spending better than infrastructure investment spending in china? consumer spending is "bad" spending because it is consumption, infrastructure investment is good spending because it increases productivity. so China with low consumer spending, high investment, and usa high in consumer spending and low in infrastructure spending, china's economy is better than usa economy.
