    I personally own a Rolex explorer TT 36mm and bought it from AD here in Florida USA for $11750+ tax. Gave away my Daytona Cosmograph (too busy dial) and Explorer SS (date )to my son. In today's smartphone world date is a nuisance on mechanical watches. Class, elegance, prestige, value, dress and sports watch, accuracy of -15 seconds per month (purchased on Jan 23). No other watch for me for the rest of my life. (70 years old). Got it after 2 years of waiting from AD. The best watch in the world for prestige and value. Ahhh the feeling of happiness. 💯🤔👍

    After watching the video and reading the comments, I feel a number of people are missing the mark re this watch. The purpose of the release is to symbolise the coming home of the explorer, it is reverting back to its original size. The watch is aimed at true enthusiasts who celebrate the coming home of the explorer and applaud the reasoning behind the rolex decision. Its nothing to do with making the watch appeal to asians or woman, that is absurd. This is a very special piece. If you can't appreciate it, your best to stay away.

    • @WatchAdvisor
      @WatchAdvisor  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That might all be the case and true - in theory… The markets though have other rules … they are more commercial, more rational and for sure less emotional…

      @@WatchAdvisor let's talk again in 6 months or so when some data is available on whether more woman than men are buying this watch. I have heard of a number of men either being lucky enough to get it..or are waiting in a list. I haven't heard of any woman buying it or even wanting it. There is always room for sentiment....emotional attachments etc. We are human after all.

    • @WatchAdvisor

      You don’t seem to read lots of comments on our channel… if you did you would know that I am a very strong proponent of emotions/emotional buying and not rationality… But in this case (as in almost all Rolex cases) I think decisions are purely made rational… Rolex is being treated like a share, like filthy lucre…

    I have the same size wrist as you and I was concerned abt the smaller size but decided to put my name down for one with my AD whilst letting them know I wasn't sure about the size. I tried it on and I felt like it was perfect, I've had it 3 weeks now and it has barely left my wrist. The dial face is the same size as a new GMT but it doesn't have all the other stuff around it, the size is just right. Once I'd worn it for a while, when I put my other watches on they seem brick like, I bet if you wore that watch for a week you would really see something more than you see after a quick try. The Explorer is meant to be this size, I'm a fairly large guy with wrists the same size as yours and it wears great, it so comfortable as well because of the taper and it feels like you are wearing a watch on a leather strap not a bracelet. In my view they really have made their best version of this watch yet, the true black gloss dial works so much better than the 39mm one that had a not quite matte, not quite gloss dial. To me at least this version is near perfect. The AR coating makes a surprising difference to the dial compared to other watches from theirs that don't have it, it's taken them so long to start using AR coating but it's definitely made a difference.
    Regarding the size change, I appreciate the fact that they didn't just use the OP case and bracelet etc, they've actually designed this from the ground up as its own watch which they could easily have not done. There has been a problem for a good while in their catalogue because they offered the OP 39, Explorer, Airking and Milgauss all in the same kinda 39/40mm time only space. By moving the OP up and the Explorer down it leaves room in the middle for a new Airking or Milgauss or both in 2022. I'm betting whichever it is comes in both black and white dial colours as the old OP white dial went. Possibly the Milgauss might just go altogether as all watches are now so anti magnetic but I bet we see a new time only watch from Rolex in the professional category at 39/40mm next year. Many watch YTers are expecting a larger Explorer, they wont do this, there is no other professional watch in their line up that comes in different sizes, I bet we see a revamped Airking next year. Also in 2023 the Explorer is 70 years old (as is the sub) what are the odds they will do a full gold version or maybe a platinum version with an ice blue dial of the Explorer. That could be very cool!
    Anyway great vid, thanks! Sorry for the boring Rolex spiel, I like lots of other brands too! ;)

    • @WatchAdvisor
      @WatchAdvisor  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us, this is an interesting read... Concerning the size I cant go back to such a size after wearing > 40 mm for decades now... It might fit well and also look good for others, but not for me... What Rolex did with the Explorer was the right move and I do not expect bigger version to follow, just as you wrote. Why should the y do this? Makes no sense! All the rest is pure speculation... you hardly can predict what Rolex is going to do even if there is an anniversary coming... Rolex ticks different! 😉

    • @TheRunningManZ
      @TheRunningManZ 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WatchAdvisor Of course its speculation, around the platinum or gold specials for anniversaries especially. However we know which watches haven't moved to the "little crown at 6" and which watches have, the ones not having been done are getting less and less. The Daytona was face lifted not that long ago compared with the Milgauss and Airking, its gotta be there turn very soon. Maybe the SkyDweller as its 10 next year too? Its kinda fun to talk about and then never see the watches in store lol!

It takes time to get use to a small watch on the wrist. I cannot see how men use to wear 28mm - 34mm watches back in the 1900's.

    Excellent video, clear shots with lots of details. I appreciate your advice to not feed the flipper/grey market, I’d never buy over retail but clearly lots of people do. But we need to get used to it. The new Rolex AD model is to sell most of their watches at retail to closely affiliated middlemen, then get a kickback, or more likely the “middleman” is actually a shell company of the AD, with the middleman/AD raking in the excess profits from selling at the market price. And to sell to whales who will buy overpriced jewelry and slow selling watches.
    36mm rules it out for my 18.5 cm wrist anyway. Why did they shrink the size? Only Rolex knows, but the Asian market, primarily China including HK, is the most important region for luxury goods, period, full stop. Everything else is just icing on the profit cake, even small-wristed enthusiasts.

    • @WatchAdvisor
      @WatchAdvisor  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us! I do agree with all your wrote and I have been pointing this out in dozens of comments before. It is GREEDY business! Only Rolex can stop it by introducing one official and total transparent waiting list hosted on the official Rolex website. Then the watches will go to those who really want to buy and wear them. The more people requesting to buy one, the more Rolex should allocate the watches to the waiting list and not ADs. It is the client then who should choose whom is going to deliver the watch to him. Even a factory/platform pick-up should be possible. If you want to control this you can. It only has to be done. What actually happens simply is a joke. It is GREEDY business! It is extra money making and should be stopped asap!

    Great review. I like the Explorer - a tough, do it all watch. Versatile and not too shouty. But something is not quite right with this iteration. I think the proportions of the watch face have been improved from the 39, but it seems a bit small - smaller than a true 36mm? The bracelet taper is too much. Maybe the ideal size would be 38mm? Surely 41mm would look too gawky with poor proportions. In any case, impossible to get. Yawn. Omega could so easily trump this watch with a fully brushed 38mm Aqua Terra. Tudor did, with the BB36.

      The line under the crown indicates it is a Twinlock crown in stainless steel. Two dots (and not 3 dots for a Triplock crown) again indicated it is a Twinlock crown with precious metal. If it was a Triplock Gold crown it is 3 dots with the middle dot larger and a Triplock Platinum crown like the 116506 Platinum Daytona, the centre of the 3 dots is smaller to indicate the crown is Platinum.

    Love your detailed review of my favourite Rolex watch Alex. When I got on the waitlist, only the 39mm was the size that Rolex made them in but the waiting period was a blessing in disguise because by the time my AD called me, Rolex had already launched the new Explorer in 36mm. I am so glad that Rolex went back to the original diameter of 36mm and I love my Explorer 1 and it will remain with me for life.

    such a punch of stupid comments. are the people are jealous? in the whole range of rolex-sportwatches there is no 36mm rolex in the current line-up. actually only the 37mm yachtmaster is on the smaller side. i ve a 15mm wrist- its impossible for me to wear a larger watch then 38mm. it just looks stupid. i got the new explorer in steel directly from my ad, and it fits perfectly. i wish they downsice the gmt-master too to 38mm- even if its only one configuration. btw. rolex is a "stiftung"-i dont know the english word- and its all about exploring-sports and adventures- are the people really believe there are only males with "big" wrists in this field? rolex made a truly clever decision- give the smaller wrists a sporty, classy watch.

    16:09. Great video and commentary, Alexander. Unfortunately in the US, we no longer have waiting lists. Patience is no longer enough. In the US, we have to compete in spending history among clients to be considered for a Rolex watch. (And no spending amount guarantees anything.) If I have to spend tens of thousands on diamonds to *maybe* be considered-not knowing who else is spending what-I like the guaranteed, overnight shipping from the grey dealers better. It is our ADs who have gotten greedy. When MSRP on today’s Breitlings is $8K, a steel Royal Oak MSRP is over $20K, and Patek MSRP for a new steel 5711 is $34K, aren’t Rolex MSRP set unrealistically low, creating the problem in the first place?

    • @WatchAdvisor
      @WatchAdvisor  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Interesting read! Thanks for sharing! It is a shame and only created - as you wrote - by greedy ADs… What a shame! Rolex is “only” meant to be a manufacturer. That’s what the Rolex foundation wants … the ADs are free to do what they want with the watches they get delivered… The only way to stop these greedy activities is to create an official waiting list handled/operated by Rolex … so everyone wanting a Rolex would exactly know when he gets his desired watch for retail price…

    I have the money in hand to buy a Rolex. Unfortunately I'm still on some "waitlist" for a Submariner (going on 2 years), and the new Explorer 36mm. I never got the call for the 39mm. I have AD purchase history but I won't kiss ass, waste money on jewelry/watches that I don't need, and waste time being fake person to AD reps just to get a watch.

    • @omarion07
      @omarion07 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You have to have purchase history with your AD unfortunately. You have to play the AD game or wait very very long time and even then you might not get the watch you want. Personally, I'm buying Tudor watches to build up purchase history and I've my name for Explorer II. Of course you can look at other brands as well. But the heart wants what it wants!

    • @Milofchg
      @Milofchg 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@omarion07 I hear you, that's one way of doing it. As for myself I'm at an age where I have no time for games. The way I see it. I NEVER had to wait in line or pay for any VIP service at nightclubs LOL So I don't need to be on the other side of a horological velvet rope at an AD. You either want my business$$$ or not. At the end of the day it's just a watch. It doesn't make a man any more handsome or youthful. Fortunately a Rolex is one of the few goods that will last a lifetime, and truly retain it's value. Can't say that about any car, furniture, electronics, clothes, even most jewelry. The only reason I want to upgrade is because I don't want to wear my 5513 maxi dial Sub. It's had it's days since I first bought it used in the early 90's.

    Great review. I really think Rolex should have retained the 39mm and branded / marketed this watch as a women's alternative, as it is mostly women who will end up wearing it. Congratulations on your message at the end of the video. I wish more TH-cam channels would also discourage people from buying these watches at vastly inflated prices. Unfortunately it seems there are a lot of very shady characters operating within the world of watches - some of them even have their own TH-cam channels!

What these greedy ADs, their flippers and resellers do is a SHAME! The only way to stop this BS is to have an official waiting list provided by Rolex. Independent ADs will do what they want and not deliver the watches to those who really want and deserve them… It is greedy business and a shame!

The 39mm version was perfect, maybe they painted themselves into a corner with nowhere to go.
