'ASTROPHOTOGRAPHIE' - Harry Hodgman on the Michael Parekōwhai Steinway Piano

'ASTROPHOTOGRAPHIE' is a short and peaceful improvisation in A flat.
Since recording this in 2018, it has developed further with some more structure and finesse as it surfaces in my sets now. One adaptation is called 'ASTROSYLUM', and another called 'ASTROPICTURE'.
It also has a more recent sort of sister song in E flat minor called 'Gutierrez', which is at the same stage now as this one was in this video, so maybe in three more years it will be something. Gutierrez is the name of a very sweet character in The New Pope who I felt could come through as a piano piece.
I have never been comfortable improvising during a performance. I usually practice like crazy leading up to a gig, so that I have confidence in what I'm playing. Given the nature of this performance at City Gallery, I started designing songs with a vague direction and enough safety and room to fill with new approaches.
Yeah it has a mistake or two, and it's very short, but it's one of the seedlings in the forest of this music.
