Not mentioned, but two shortcuts I use a lot involve replacing a clip on the timeline. Select a clip on the timeline (or a Gap clip), then select a clip from the Library and (either) Option-R to replace the clip on the timeline but keeping the length of the timeline clip, or Shift-R to do the same but the length of the clip on the timeline changes to the length of the source. Fast! If you intend to keep the timeline clip length the same, then all you have to do is choose an IN point on the clip in the Library.
Great tips. Nice and fast. I knew most of these but the ones i didnt know about are very helpful. I opened a project and did these tips while you were talking. Hopefully i remember

Some short cuts I use a lot are ~ to unleash the clip from the magnetic line to the clip above. For example to remove a clip from the timeline without the connected clip above. And changing the connecting line by standing on the clip and press comm-option the change the position of the connecting line. Well since you asked..... how about how to take a video and create a one minute portrait version out of it for Instagram? I’ve seen one but would love to see how you would do it. And....how to really use compound clips. I don’t fully understand how they work. And while I’m on a role here......is there an easy way to clean up your projects in FCPX? For example, before I learned how library, event, and project worked, I created “projects” randomly. So now I have a “project” that isn’t in a “project” and I don’t know how to reorganize and get it into one. I realize this one might be hard b/c yours are not all messed up like mine are and not sure if you could recreate that. Any of those would be great! But what you do is awesome!

@@Brad_West thanks Brad and Donna, may i know whether you can share me how to create the red square box with number in fcp from the above clip? That the number to introduce next short cut. Many thanks :)
I haven’t made a dedicated video on the magnetic timeline. I’m trying to remember where I might have mentioned it 🤔 It might have been in my FCPX for beginners video: th-cam.com/video/-kpjUytfNR4/w-d-xo.html
Thanks for the video. I’m thinking of switching from DaVinci Resolve Studio to FCPX and am trying to see if it will do everything DR can do. This video was a huge help. Thanks!
Hey, thanks for this! It's like an instant course. I was fairly proficient in the old FCP some years back. This "new" version does the same things in different ways. It's easy to get lost looking for something you know must be there. Your little video is like an instant roadmap.
Glad you found it helpful Richard 😊🙌🏼 Years ago I was hesitant to switch from FCP7 but FCPX changed quite a lot and I love it now. Hopefully the PDF download in the comments will be a handy reference for you 😊
@@Brad_West The project I've started is pretty daunting, but I think it would have been much easier in FCP7. I wonder if it was easier to learn than the new program. I can see this one could be pretty fluid once you have got the language down. My old version of FC wouldn't work on the current machines. I had a look at Premier as I'd heard that's where the Pros went when Apple dropped the new version on them. I didn't like Premier much, so I decided to take the plunge. Today I feel I am drowning, but after gasping enough, I'll get to the surface. At least half the tools in your video will help a lot! I'm glad I came cross it. thanks again.
There’s a little bit of a learning curve coming from FCP7 but once you get the hang of it, it’s really user friendly. Since you’re brand new to FCPX, I’d recommend watching my Basics of FCPX video: th-cam.com/video/-kpjUytfNR4/w-d-xo.html That might help you to get started on the right foot 😊👍🏼
At 3:30 scrubbing the timeline. If using a mouse, hold Shift and roll the center wheel to scroll the timeline. I use a trackpad and have set it up so that I simply drag two fingers to scroll the timeline.
Great video. More here than in the 5 other FCPX videos I've seen so far. It's painful to switch, but PP makes me feel like I'm editing a dubbed old movie.
@@Brad_West I'd love to see a video (maybe you have it) that shows how to edit a talking head video (for TH-cam) with FCPX. In PP, I drop the clip into the timeline, blade and ripple delete until I have the core. Lots and lots of cuts and delete. Literally, two keystrokes. I can't seem to find an easy way in FCPX, yet. Any thoughts?
@@358studios Sure! In FCPX, if you have your talking head on the timeline you can scrub through or play through the clip and hit Cmd+B at all the points you want to cut. To get rid of the parts you don't want, there are two options. 1. Hitting the delete key - which will remove that part and leave a blank space. 2. Hit the backspace key and that will ripple delete that section. Hope that helps 😊 Let us know if there are any other topics you'd be interested in seeing videos on, we're always looking for ideas for new videos.
@@Brad_West I appreciate the information. Thank you. Do you know if there is any way to remap the delete key to the left-hand side of the keyboard? To accomplish the same thing in PP, I remapped ripple delete to F which allows me to activate the blade tool, cut with a click of the mouse as I scrub through the timeline and F (ripple delete) without removing my hand from the mouse or the keyboard. Super fast. Maybe I just need to learn to be more patient. :) A video of interest that immediately comes to mind (again you may already have it) is best plug-ins for FCPX and is there a way to get motion graphics like you can via After Affects in FCPX? I'm at the beginning of my research and this journey to switch over, so these things will probably present themselves along the way but thought I'd ask. Thanks again for your help.
@@358studios Yeah you can customize all your shortcuts. Click on the Final Cut Pro menu, select Commands, then Customize and you can remap any shortcut you want. 😊 Thanks for the suggestions. You can use Apple Motion to create and incorporate motion graphics in FCPX. I'll look into creating a best plug-ins video sometime in the future 😊
Excellent video really good keyboard tips I’m just starting out in editing, and finding using a mouse is not only slow but “fiddly” too so getting a “Handel” on this will really help thanks again stay safe.
Thanks alot , i just upgraded from imovie to finalcut pro and was struggling adjusting. The only thing that stayed the same was the cmd+R , and E command. This is going to push me in the right direction :)
Great video, life is easier now. two more shortcuts very helpful, to delete the section of the clip bring the cursor where you want the trim to be started and hit option+[ it will delete all the footage before the cursor and same for option +] it will delete all the after. its very useful for trimming in single clip. hopefully this makes sense. Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it Ettiene! If you can send me an example of the exact effect you are hoping to achieve I can try to help. In the meantime, this video might have some tips that are relevant 😄
This is a great video ,I'm glad that stumble upon this channel and definitely liked what I saw ,will use those videos to learn more and more about video making .Thanks for the inspiration and the help mate. Love it so much. Well done!
The audio handling is one of the best easy to use features on FCPX that give such a professional look and a smoother experience to the viewer. As a heavy After Effects user, when clips come with audio it’s a bit of a pain to always have them duplicated and treat one as the audio and the other as the video, the way FCPX handles it I find it a lot friendlier in that sense (detach or show, expand one of the end, give the viewer a hint of what’s coming or a nice ease-off of what just happened). Now... the one thing I can’t really get my head around is, replacing footage. I find it hard and breaks all the time, any pointers on this front? Thanks for the video and the shortcuts PDF!
Absolutely! FCPX gives you way more audio control than After Effects. 😊 Can you give me a bit more information on what you are trying to replace? Is it a case of replacing a render from After Effects? For that to work, you need to make sure the format and codec is the same when you re-render from AE. Also, if the original render had audio, make sure the new render also has audio. If not, FCPX won't see it as a suitable clip to replace. If you're trying to replace a clip in your edit with another clip, this might give you the info you need: support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/final-cut-pro/ver4e2fcf0/mac Hope that helps! 😊
Brad and Donna Thanks for the pointer will take a look at this. My main issue with FCPX vs AE replacing files, in AE it’s super easy for example to work with a still image stretched along a layer’s timeline, cut, manipulate, animate, etc and replace all of them later with anything else: a movie file, an image sequence (that plays back like a movie file), so on and so forth. For example, updating a PSD file with updated graphics, if they were used in FCPX, good luck getting that to sync. Even worse if import media, create proxy/optimized, etc files was on... great for keeping it all together, not so great for updating/replacing footage. Granted, for that type of workflow I do think Motion is more suited for that but haven’t really tried it properly yet in that situation. I think the best way in this case is to plan ahead and work with compound clips, that way anything can be replaced later inside the compounded clips which is then use in a main project’s storyline. At the same time, FCPX is truly aimed at very fast video editing and less at compositing, so it definitely favors being able to quickly move, change, drop new things from scratch than replacing or piggybacking after the fact. Example, replacing a clip with another keeps none of the effects of the original one, I find myself copy/pasting attributes very often.
@@alejmc Yeah FCPX doesn't have that "alt-drag-and-drop" kind of replace feature that AE has unfortunately. Using compound clips or copy and pasting attributes is probably your best bet. I do all my editing in FCPX and compositing/animation in AE. What you could do is edit any video and audio elements in FCPx and export a video file to work with in AE. Then if you need to change anything, you can change the edit in FCPX and replace that video file in AE to make any compositing and animation changes. That's generally what I do when working with FCPX and AE on the same video 😄
Glad it was helpful! I'm not sure if there is a shortcut for that but you can move the connection point by holding down alt + cmd and clicking on the audio to move the connection point to wherever you click. I hope that helps! 😊
Also, if your clip is on the primary storyline and your audio is connected to it, you can hit P to activate your position tool and then hold down the tilde key (`) to move the clip without affecting the audio.
Thanks for the great video! Very informative, and the largest collection of FCPX shortcuts I've ever seen. Question: how did you generate the keyboard graphics used in the video?
J-K-L emulate the way old Steenbeck editing tables for 35mm or 16mm film used to work…. They had three buttons, middle one to stop, right one to play forward, fast forward, faster forward etc.
Hey Dennis. I think what you're referring to is skimming and you can toggle that on and off using the shortcut "S". It's the first icon just above the timeline on the far right hand side. Let me know if that helps? 😊
I have a useful one i use all the time, press "T" (without modifier keys) and then you can move what is displayed by the clip without moving it (if that makes sense). You can also use it to move a cut without moving the timeline.
Hi Brad, I have an unrelated question for you. Does a FCP project has to have one kind of fps only? Meaning if I have a 24 and a 60 does both of them have to be "converted" to be and fit in the same project? I am sorry if this is a dumb question.
Hey Vladimir. Not a dumb question at all 😊 Your project does have to be set to one frame rate. Generally speaking, you’d set it to the lowest. In your case a 24fps timeline is perfect. You can drop those 60fps clips onto the timeline and FCP will conform them for you. The added benefit is that you can slow those clips down without losing frames using the automatic speed feature. If you want to do that, look under the viewer window, click on the retiming options drop down and select automatic speed. Hope that helps 😊👍🏼

Thank you there! I copied them all down!
Great! Glad you found the video useful. There is also a pinned comment with a link to a PDF that you can download if you like 😊
The audio handling is one of the best easy to use features on FCPX that give such a professional look and a smoother experience to the viewer.
Can you give me a bit more information on what you are trying to replace? Is it a case of replacing a render from After Effects? For that to work, you need to make sure the format and codec is the same when you re-render from AE. Also, if the original render had audio, make sure the new render also has audio. If not, FCPX won't see it as a suitable clip to replace.
If you're trying to replace a clip in your edit with another clip, this might give you the info you need: support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/final-cut-pro/ver4e2fcf0/mac
Hope that helps!
Great shortcuts list! I am looking for a shortcut to remove the attachment point of a video clip to the audio. Thank you!
@@Brad_West Wonderful! Exactly what I was looking for... I will write it down with all your very useful shortcuts. 😎
Awesome! Glad I could help 😊👍🏼 In the description of the shortcuts video, there is a link to download a PDF with all the shortcuts if that helps.

Thanks for the great video! Very informative, and the largest collection of FCPX shortcuts I've ever seen. Question: how did you generate the keyboard graphics used in the video?
Thanks Chris! Glad you found it useful. We created them from scratch in After Effects 😊
Thanx brother ❤️
You’re welcome!
Great knowledge, even though I knew more than Half of them, I appreciate the additional info!

Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the video!
Awesome video! got some really helpful tips!
Glad you enjoyed it and that you found it useful 😊
J-K-L emulate the way old Steenbeck editing tables for 35mm or 16mm film used to work…. They had three buttons, middle one to stop, right one to play forward, fast forward, faster forward etc.
That’s awesome! I would love to play around with one of those. 😄
Quick question....how do I stop the orange line that follows everywhere I go on my timeline? I think it's the scrubbing line or whatever it's called.
Hey Dennis. I think what you're referring to is skimming and you can toggle that on and off using the shortcut "S". It's the first icon just above the timeline on the far right hand side. Let me know if that helps? 😊
thanks a lot bro 🙏🏻
You’re welcome 😊👊🏼
Thanks for your video,How do you do the shortcuts tips on the video?Thank you again!
I used After Effects to animate the buttons over the footage 😊
Smart&Handsome!
thanks, great explanation, very helpful. If I could suggest I would speak a bit slowly for a better comprehension.
Thanks for your feedback Angelo. This is an older video and I’ve definitely slowed down since then haha 😊👍🏼
Thank you so much BRO
You’re welcome!
I have a useful one i use all the time, press "T" (without modifier keys) and then you can move what is displayed by the clip without moving it (if that makes sense). You can also use it to move a cut without moving the timeline.
That is such a great shortcut! Thanks so much for sharing Kevin. I'll definitely be using that one from now on! 😊
Thanks
No problem 😊
Thank you for the Geat Video!!!
You’re welcome. Thanks for watching 😊🙌🏼
Thank you, this is really helpful and I really appreciate it.
My pleasure 😊👊🏼
great tutorial, thanks for the video!
